In my opinion, making heat transfer vinyl projects may be the most fun thing you can do with your Cricut, Silhouette or ScanNCut machine. But, knowing how to properly layer heat transfer vinyl (aka HTV) during the heat setting process can be confusing and if you do it wrong, the HTV won’t stick or it will fall off in no time. Once you know the proper procedure, however, it will be a breeze to create multi-colored, multi-layered HTV designs on t-shirts, pillows, canvas, tote bags, etc. and you’ll wonder why you weren’t making a million gifts, décor pieces and more before now.
STEPS TO LAYER HTV:
1. When creating the layers for your design, it’s easiest if the base layer is a solid outline of the entire design. Cut out and weed all layers.
2. While still on their backing sheets, position all layers of your HTV design together so the design looks complete.
3. Place the stack of layers on your t-shirt where you plan to heat set them.
4. Peel off the stack of layers except for the bottom base layer. Press the bottom base layer down and heat set for a very short time to just tack it on to the t-shirt (probably 2 - 5 seconds but can vary by vinyl brand and machine used to press it).
5. Place the stack of layers over the tacked down base layer and position in place once again. Then peel away all of the stacked layers except the second to last one. Press this layer down on to the tacked base layer and heat set again to just tack it in place.
6. Repeat step 5 until all layers except the very top layer are tacked down.
7. Finally, position the top layer and heat set it for the full amount of time needed to fully set the vinyl (20 seconds for this project but yours could vary depending on vinyl brand and machine used to heat set the vinyl). NOTE: If using glitter HTV, it must be the last layer that you heat set. You cannot layer anything over glitter HTV.
8. Enjoy!
Please refer to the video tutorial for much more detailed explanations of the above steps. Thanks for watching!

did you have to go into canvas workspace to separate the colors? that's what i get confuse with on layering. Im just trying to learn.

Yes, you'll need to have a separate layer for each color so you can cut each color of HTV on its own. Sounds like you'll need to trace the image you're using to split it apart unless it's an SVG already. I've got a video on basic image tracing in canvas workspace if that would help. The question is cut off but I'm guessing you're asking if layering the vinyl affects the durability of it on the shirt. If you're using a high quality HTV and not overheating it in a way that would effect the glue, it should remain stuck when layered just as long as it will as only one layer. I have had circumstances when I was first starting out where some of the layers on top started to peel off the lower layers but that was really user error (I didn't heat it long enough or heated it too long) and not because of the layering itself. I hope I answered your question. If my guess is wrong about what you were asking, please let me know. Thanks!
