    this is eye-opening! I've been struggling with repotting my big aloes and thought cutting was the only way, because the root grew to an out-of-control length.

    @dd Mosh I started with a plant I got from a friend. I don't see many people started with seeds, or can even start aloe with seeds. If you happen to know anyone who grows aloes, ask them for a pup or ask where they got it. Aloe vera is quite resilient, so most of the time you'll be okay to start with almost any aloe plant.

    @dd Mosh Hi. I know this question is a year old, but just in case you're still trying to get started, I wanted to share that if you intend to grow the aloe for food rather than ornamentals, the best variety for this is called "Aloe Barbadensis Miller," as it has the highest values of specific nutrients, and the leaves are a good, hefty size. Rather than starting with seeds, which can be challenging to get started, I would instead search for plants of the Miller variety. Depending on how much space you have and how quickly you want to reach the farm's capacity, buy a number of these and pot them in such a way that as the roots grow, they can easily find the surface of the soil; This is where the pups will develop. In a few months when the pups are strong enough, pull them off and plant, as before, with the root tips kind of pointing upwards so more pups will form. You can easily turn half a dozen plants into a hundred this way. I've been doing this with my smaller variety of aloe for 5 years now and I've never run low on plants to sell or give as gifts. One trick I've been testing for a year or so - I purchased a 10' length of vinyl guttering, 2 end caps and 4 middle support pieces. I drilled drainage holes every 12" and used it to repot my pups. It's been working absolutely perfectly, and it was such an inexpensive and space-efficient solution! If you can attach the guttering to a fence or wall, or if you're able to build a vertical rack, you'll be able to fit a ton of plants in a very small footprint. I use this space as a propagation area for many different types of succulents, and vegetable plant starts as well. Sort of like a nursery for baby plants. When they're read to go in their own pots or be planted outdoors, it's so quick and easy to just pop off an end cap of the guttering and slide them right out! I think this would work very well in a greenhouse as well, at least along the East, North and West perimeter, to really make the most of the limited space. I hope this is helpful. Good luck to you with your farm! I hope you have great success. 🙂

    That is really impressive to see the procedure step-by-step, so, you started from the top and going down, securing the mother aloe vera from the top and removing the bottom and removing all those baby aloe vera, it looked easier and safer to the plant.. I can see that the growth of the plant is not intervened and won’t die.

  • @awadulcecity

    @awadulcecity

    Жыл бұрын

    @@dana102083 what's the appropriate draining soil? Would it be a cacti mix? I've tried like 4-5 different soils now and none have worked well... And I'd hate to transplant it yet again, because I see it suffers. Another thing that worries me is that it doesn't stand sun well.... It turns brown very quickly and burns easily. It doesn't have the color it did when it had its original leaves in the beginning when I bought it (and it grew entirely outdoors) which is that bright green. Its leaves are somewhat of a slightly deeper green almost heading towards a blue tone.. The leaves are thinner and longer rather than shorter and wider, like the original leaves were. However, if I place it out of constant shade, it burns in a couple of days.

    @@awadulcecitytart slowly introducing it to the sun. Put it out for a couple hours a day then move back to shade for first week. Add an hour each week. Sounds like environmental co dictions. You need to let the entire soil dry out before you water again. Maybe you have it in too big of a container. Roots like to be in a tighter space. Putting it in a smaller pot will help soil dry out faster. If you do repot it, check the roots for any brown, mushy, black or crispy roots and trim those off.

    Soooo, what I really need your help with is how should I layer my bigger sections of the plant. Unfortunatelly, they have grown down and around and I am at a loss as to how to save them. In your videos, when you are layering them, the are nice and straight, so it is easy to do, but mine are all crooked. What can I do to layer them????? I have also sent you a FB message with all the pictures so I am hoping you will have a solution for me.

  • @TheAloeVeraGarden

    I use compost soil that's why it attracts some soil bugs. I don't use pesticides as well. I don't think they can harm the plant as they only feast on decaying compost.

    Man I got two little aloe plants a couple years ago, now 12+ pups later the mother plants are just huge! They’ve outgrown the biggest pots I have which are 18 gallon I think? Should I just go with a bigger pot next? Or just trim these down? There’s like 7-8 new pups on them too so I’m running out of room with all these! Lol they are fun to grow tho! They make great gifts too!

  • @TheAloeVeraGarden

    @TheAloeVeraGarden

    Жыл бұрын

    Wow, 18 gallon pot is huge already. Is your Aloe plant Aloe vera? If it is Aloe vera, then you don't have to repot it, just make use of the leaves by harvesting some. If it not Aloe vera but an Aloe that grows really big, then I guess you need a bigger pot.
