I put mine outside in deep shade about 15 years ago and then kind of forgot about it. When I did remember, it had been sitting there for about a year and the roots had gone through the bottom of the pot so I ended up leaving it in that spot permanently. Now it has grown so tall that it has broken through the plant that was giving it shade and amazingly, it suffers our very hot and dry summer heat of over 40ºC and 15-20% RH almost every day. But somehow it has adapted and is thriving.

If mine got even slightly too dry, leaves would turn yellow and die. So for a few years, I’ve had it in a self-watering pot, and it LOVES it!

Also, I do braid mine. There’s a video on KZread in which someone shows how her 10-year-old money tree looks, and it turns out that the stems really need the support of being braided together.

I'm growing my money tree in leca for last two years. I'm happy that it's doing great. 😊
I live in a garden level apartment, so sunlight from windows isn't really an option for me, but my little unbraided chonky-trunk baby money tree was still doing quite well for itself...until my cat figured out how to get to it. She absolutely ravaged its leaves, and as a result it's looking like it just threw itself into a blender...but it's not dead. I've been putting it outside in the late afternoon to give it a boost now that the weather is warmer, so I'm hoping it'll pull through.
I just bought mine for the first time today ..thats why I am here ... hoping I can grow my money tree well🙏 I love plant
Thanks Mr Sheffield for all your tips. Your money plant looks very healthy. I’m a big fan of your channel 😊

Happy to see coir mentioned. The Burpee brand seems good, sells out often on Amazon.
Oddly, this is one of the few plants I've been very successful with. I've had one in both a very humid, southern climate and now have 2 in a very dry, northern climate. They grow like crazy. It doesn't need a lot of water, just well-draining soil. It seems to grow well even in minimal light conditions, too. Love this plant; looks like I have a cool jungle tree!
So funny to see the Dutch mountains in the background of your picture for the Netherlands. (I'm Dutch.) Clearly, the Dutch mountains is where unicorns live happily ever after - happily galloping among the money trees, apparently.

Maybe the foothills of the Andes?
I chronically ignore mine, and he’s grown three times bigger than when I got him. He might get watered once or twice a month 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️💚 He lives by my west facing glass sliding door, in California. In summer it gets some shade, but he seems to be happy. No yellow, scorched, or crunchy leaves. I probably need to repot it, had it a couple years now, finally learning about houseplants🙃 I do give him fertilizer, though, when I fertilize my orchids, I always give him a squirt from their bottle. So I guess I’ve accidentally taken great care of him 😅

You’ve got this ✊
I got one like 2 years ago for mother's Day or some event and it's clinging on it has grown but it definitely turns yellow and looks droopy a lot of the time
Unbraided two huge money trees, and planted in groups of three, or individually. It looks so cool
That's my bubba as you call it. He is much smaller than yours and has been cut lots of times so no more braiding for me either. He is 13 inches tall including the 7 inches of braiding. I love him and this video was cracking. I did it and made the two cuts on my jade and now we will see if all three will grow. Very exciting stuff. My last task for the day is my ficus microcarpa. It's too has a knobby root ball growing out of the earth with the leaves growing from the top. It had three out of place long leave stems growing so I cut them off and planted them in earth like a ficus cutting. Let's see if they will grow! It looks better anyways. Cheerio Rich. Love and Peace.
I’ve always wanted to try a money tree. Now that I know how to care for one properly I might just take the plunge. Thanks!

Richard I have one of these it’s beautiful. Bushy. One of my favorite plants ❤
My money tree wasn't doing well. So I decided to give rain water instead and now it's doing good.
Had one before and it was gorgeous for about a year. I ended up giving it fertilizer and it slowly died after that. I was told it was due to the rubberband I didn't see around the trunk below dirt level. But I blame that Miracle Gro. It drew in so many gnats though!
Thanks for the advice! Mine is not doing too well. I'm going to work on it now! 😊

They also love 75% cactus 25% regular soil mix where they live goes through dry periods to flooding periods so what you can do leave a plastic tray under the pot to hold to left over water that will simulate flooding and leave the water the plant will eventually drink it and leave it dry for about a week also or use your moisture meter and do what he said
I made a cutting of my lucky chestnut and it has grown very nicely by now.😺

Where's their number...
You can absolutely put one of these in direct sun in a south facing window. (Or a north facing window if you’re in the southern hemisphere) You just need to acclimate it slowly. Best time to do so is in the late winter or early spring (like this time of year in the northern hemisphere) Start out several feet from the window and move it 6 to 8 inches closer every week. Once they get accustomed to the sun they grow MUCH faster and suck up water a lot quicker too. Letting them dry out completely between waterings occasionally helps encourage the trunks to thicken and store more water. Lots of people grow these as landscaping trees here in South Florida. They do very well in direct sun.

Plants are adaptive plants grow with what they are given. The older the plant though the less it can adapt.

Hmmmm, like me or a bit older adults. I'm only 76 years young, and find it harder to adapt to changes. 😄
Well that explains why both of mine are doing great from the start, as I am from the Netherlands 😂 It was one of my first plants and for me they are as easy as my sansevierias and zz plants. I actually one water when the soil is dry. I did place them in well draining soil and then only fully water them, let it drain and put it back in its decorative pot. The stems hold a lot of moisture so for me this works for watering and it prevents rootrot.

There is a difference between light and heat. I find windows with blinds are helpful. Morning sun is much better than afternoon sun. Here in the U.S. the summers are brutal, so the right spot inside can be challenging. Thanks for the advice. Keep up the good work.

I just stick mine under a plant light and it's doing well. It does get some light from a window. I'm terrible about remembering to water so the soil dries out completely on a regular basis. Still looks fine. I let the soil sit in a dish of water so it can really saturate when I do water it. And I add a silicon supplement to the liquid fertilizer I use since I heard it makes the plant more resilient.
Mine is loving its over winter spot in the bathroom window even though it is directly above the heater. It has consistently produced new growth and some of the shoots have six levels instead of five. That might be its permanent spot even when the rest of the plants go back outside for the season.

I have mine for almost two years now. When I brought it home I realized a few pieces broke off during the transport. So I just put them in a jar of water and kept them there for almost a year. They both grew nice roots and now are planted in a cactus soil and happy. I bottom water mine whenever the leaves look a tiny bit droopy. I love this plant so much that I bought another one. It was braided very tightly and the stems were suffocating. One died. So I loosened up the braid a bit and now the stems are happy.

Just what I needed. Mine was just like yours and then I moved it closer to the window and... 😢. This is northern Spain, and it rains quite a lot so a bit warmer than Sheffield but still not too much. Now I moved it back and seems to be better but I suspect possible rot roots. Just bought my moisture meter although I might change the blocky soil I put back in the day when I had no idea what I was doing whatsoever. We'll see how it thrives or if it totally dies. In any case I have some propagation going on so hopefully I'll be able to keep it. It's a lovely plant. Thanks.

I use a chunky mix from sybotanica. Probably not every year though. Just when it’s rootbound.
I was waiting to see if he would trim the roots and replace soil when he checked for root rot. I also would have liked some guidance as to what size pot for whatever sized plant. It seemed as though the pot used was rather small and with the loose, light soil, would tend to flip over.
Mine it gets longer and bigger. Now it reach our high ceiling. I bought it like size like yours now it grew like crazy. You are right first I place my MT next to our sliding door then it grew crazy and healthy now I moved farther from the sliding door cause it is to high it doesn’t fit there it will teach the ceiling. Now I observed it some of the stem getting or dying and some more leaves going yellow but I can’t move close to sliding door no more.
That's beautiful! I haven't seen one that big! Is that the one that was on the floor on the other side of the room?

My money tree always looked great outside in the shade for the summer and then it would droop, throw out a bunch of yellow leaves and act like it was about to die when I had to bring it inside for the winter. First time I hear to keep their soil moist. mine is very happy and constantly growing with me letting it dry out completely in between watering. BUT it has a quite big pot (I didn´t know better when I repottet), I test as far as my chopstick can reach but not sure how dry the very bottom get´s. I probably water about every 2-4 weeks, depending on the temperature. It does get a lot of light though, it´s in prime position together with my monstera deliciosa.
