How to Lay Out and Square Metal Roofing Panels

How wide should your first metal roofing panel be and how do you make sure the rest of the panels are square going across the roof?
**********************************
Installing your first metal roofing panel on a project isn't as simple as fastening any panel onto the deck; it takes preparation. Today on The Metal Roofing Channel, Sheffield Metals Weathertight Warranty Inspector Jason Ayres details how to lay out your panels based on flashings, penetrations, desired look, and more. He also uses formulas and practical examples to explain how to install panels square and uniform across the entire roof.

Here in the historic parts of New Orleans the roofs are NEVER square. I skip all the remedial math exercises and place one panel at one end of the roof slope, then another panel at the other end, straighten them up, pop a chalk line and rock&roll. Works for us.

Awesome content and just what I was looking for. I am starting a new cottage build in the Spring of 2023 and will be using a metal roof. Most of the build I will be doing myself with a few friends who have already built their own cottages. Excellent points. Cheers from Canada

What would you do when you're working with an existing roof that is already out of square?

when the guy at one end of the panel is pushing too tight and you aren't checking that's fun. as for penetrations typically we would have them relocated them if possible

if you need to move the top side of your panel towards the gable, you c-clamp the panel to the lowest clip and toe-nail a screw in the top of your panel until you've stretched it enough. attach all your drag loads then replace the toe-nailed one last to keep tension. if it's the bottom of your panel, you clamp the top side to the previous panel and let the bottom float. you can also give it a tug if you need but it's a marathon not a race.

I prefer to move the pipe slightly left or right than have it come up on a rib amd looks better.

Got it, thanks Thad! 😊 Now, what does it look like to install the penetration after the roofing is installed? I can conceive it in my mind, but that doesn’t mean that’s how it should be done. Do you have a video on that?

Can you elaborate a bit more? As in the panels are already on the roof and you need to put a pipe through them? -Thad

@@BrianBaldridgeC I see! My interpretation of his explanation there is that as you're paneling across the roof, wait to cut the penetration in the deck until you see where the panels will lay. That method is really usually only necessary for large commercial roofs where you can't measure from the end of the building. -Thad

How do you seam when it is say 6" from the side of the chimney and the panels terminate against a brick wall? With hand seamer, i.e. 180 dble lock? The chimney is in center of roof, so seams are to the left & right side. Thanks Charlie

I remove the outside screw from the handles of our hand seamer and leave one in loosely so I can pull the handle down or up and use multiple short passes. hope that helps

What is the roof is not square...do you "trim" or adjust the first panel, and then go from there...and what if other end(rake is not square)

You may have to cheat your panels. And depending on the product you’re using yes, because there’s many gable end flashings that will cover your messy out of square house provided it’s no so crooked that you can notice the corrugation lines going to far in or out on the gable edges

@@7ovinadventures916 luckily I could not get panels shipped in time for what i needed...so i cancelled...and did a torch down roof. Not as pretty, but solid, and cheaper!

I hired a guy. I was curious how he would approach the "paralleogram" type roof I had....he just lined all strips up with the eave...and then trimmed on the back end...although the strips went "east to west" vs north to south...anyway..it looks pretty normal.
