    Just so you and others know, the part that you called a tassel is called silks. The tassel is the male part of the stalk that is at the very top. The silks are the female part.

    I am Montagnard jarai tribe live in North Carolina I planted corn 4 years ago they are so beautiful when I harvested I gave to American friend they boiled eat they said so tasty better than corn from grocery store .

    Thank you , this is my 2nd year growing corn. My first year we planted in clay soil and it didn't work out. This year they are in raiased garden beds and look great!

    @@megtwin maybe look up a way to deter them from eating it. IMO the squirrels didnt help plant and tend to the plants that takes hard work so they dont get to eat my hard work. Just a thought.

    It looks like on blister or milking stage yet.The corn must be in dent stage with black layers at the tip of the kernel that is the time that the corn is ready to harvest or if the husks and silk is completely brown/dry

    I'm growing corn mostly to feed chickens. Somebody suggested I can just leave the corn on plant and harvest it as I need it. What do you think of this idea? Any suggestions beyond that?

    That's not the tassel. That's the silk. The tassel is the male flower. The silk is part of the female flower. :)

    Don't forget to pollenate the silks. If you're relying on wind in a small garden, your corn will likely be missing a lot of kernals.

    The kernels get all shriveled up. I just picked some like that! I got on utube to see if they can be saved some how. Wish me luck!

    I would guess a window of about 7 days, maybe less if conditions are dry or if you have lots of caterpillars.

    @@OjsMatte I picked them and each of them had an equal shriveled top 2 inches.. They had water and food...I think the heat was just too much.

    I know how to tell when its reasdt ! when raccoons begin to go through it! NOT , but really I have been having raccoons going through my corn destroying some that I have worked so hard for!

    Have the English become Americanized enough nowadays that they usually call maize "corn," like we do in the States? Or do they always add some word like "sweet" or "barley" in front of corn to narrow things down? Just wondering if you've advanced to our level yet...

    Because there's a differnce between "sweet corn" & "field corn". google it & figure it out. Hint-it has nothing to do with the nationality of the grower😉
