Amy Sedaris: How do you know when your rabbit is sick? How do I know when my rabbit's sick?
Mary Cotter: Yeah, how do you know when your rabbit's sick? How do you know?
Amy: Well. . .
Mary: I'll tell you if you tell me.
Amy: Okay, you tell me first.
Mary: Okay, I'll tell you first. Well when my rabbits are sick one of two things happens, either they're sitting in a different position from what they usually sit in or they're doing something different with respect to eating. For example, some rabbits will stop eating altogether. Other rabbits, and this is a key thing to notice, other rabbits will change patterns of eating. For example, if a rabbit is usually a good hay eater and suddenly he stops eating hay and he'll only eat lettuce or something like that or if you notice a rabbit is picking up a piece of food, looking like he's chewing it and then dropping it, that's a change in eating pattern. So the key here is to be aware of your rabbit's normal eating pattern so that if there is any change you can detect them because a change in eating patterns is one of the main ways to tell the rabbit is sick. And then postures, you've seen Dusty sit in different postures.
Amy: That's usually when I know it's gas and then I give her. . .
Mary: And how do you know that? What happens?
Amy: Because she's pressing her belly on the floor trying to work the bubble out.
Mary: Yeah, that's what they do. It's called belly pressing.
Amy: They keep changing their position.
Mary: Exactly.
Amy: Almost looks like they're restless.
Mary: Restlessness, that's right. And they'll keep pushing their belly against the floor almost like they're trying to massage their belly into the floor. So that's another way you can tell if your rabbit is sick. And the final way you can tell if your rabbit is sick, if you even suspect something, is to learn to take your rabbit's temperature. And we have a How Cast video of how to take your rabbit's temperature so you might want to take a look at that. Once you learn how to take your rabbit's temperature you'll be able to detect drops in body temperature, which are the most frequent way of knowing that a rabbit's on a downhill slide. Very important to be able to do at home, we think.
Amy: But that's the main thing because they can't tell you. You just. . . I don't know that's what so nice about spending so much time with your rabbit. You just get so familiar with each other.
Mary: You get to know what's normal.
Amy: Yeah, you get to know what's normal.
Mary: Exactly. Yeah and they're not like dogs and cats. . .
Amy: And the poop. You said that you can tell with their poop too.
Mary: You can tell with their poop too. They're not like dogs and cats in that they no voices. So if there's something wrong they can't whimper. They can't do anything like that.
Amy: Because they're prey animals and they don't want to signal.
Mary: They're prey animals, right. Yeah, if you see a change. . . Yeah, I should've mentioned that too. If you see a change in poop just as if you see a change in intake, if you see a change in output that can be important too. If your rabbit normally poops a certain amount per day and suddenly you're not seeing any poops that may or may not be an indication of sickness or the rabbit may just not have eaten recently, but you have to keep an eye on it. You should know your rabbit's normal patterns so that if there's a change in the normal pattern you can pick it up quickly and so something about it. Unlike dogs and cats, you don't have the kind of waiting time that you do with those species. For example, if a dog doesn't eat one morning and the wife says to the husband, 'Hey Honey, he didn't eat his breakfast.' and the husband says, 'Oh, we should keep an eye on him.' You can keep an eye on him until the next day and if he still doesn't eat his breakfast the next day then the wife might say, 'We got to call that vet.' And th

Just for the record, I stepped on a cottontail baby on accident when I was just a child. I was trying to catch it. It whimpered. Hamsters don't normally vocalize either, but when I pick up one of my hamsters--sometimes he decides to vocalize his protests! He has also vocalized when in distress, such as one time when he was stuck in a hole and had to be freed or when under attack from another hamster. I suppose rabbits save their voices for extreme duress only.

my bunny ate other rabbits old droppings and he would do this a lot but now he's pressing his stomach to the ground and he's not even hopping, he just takes small steps and looks as if he's about to lay down but he's just pressing his stomach to the ground and staying still. not even two weeks ago I would let him exercise in the backyard all the time and he'd get excited and jump around in the air and chase after me but all suddenly he's not the bunny I used to know, he just looks around the backyard and sits in the pile of poop under the rabbit hutch. I tried giving him the treats he loved such as apples, bananas, and lettuce, but he just sniffed it and backed away. I don't know what to do anymore but I used to look forward to seeing his happy self run around the backyard and bring joy to everyone.

i hope Zoe s' bunny is still up and hopping as she is a lovely heart of gold person. as said lettuce is very bad for rabbits carrots are sugary treats. cabbage/ spring cabbage is good but bunnies best food is fibre clean hay to eat and balanced dry food it lets them bind and re eat their poo whilst you watch t.v. and always a bottle of fresh water. they like to roam.

It made me so upset, but I learned that God will protect him. All I was hoping for that he lived a long life and didn't die painfully. So I will know this for my next rabbit 😃 thank you

If she's in a cage and not getting any exercise, let her out to play. They don't really belong in cages, mine is a 'free' bunny and he's extremely energetic, I know a lot of bunnies that get 'sad' once they get 'locked up', it's like locking a dog in a crate or a person in their bedroom, you do really get bored and just lay there doing nothing. Once your bunny gets out and can play, run, jump & get to know you, she'll be much happier :) the best of luck!!

My pet rabbit has started showing some unusual behavior recently. He goes around his business normally for the most part of the day but sometimes, especially at night, freezes at one place (as if he's blank) for a couple of minutes. During this time, he doesn't sit down, which he normally does if he's relaxing, but stands like a statue. I got him checked at the vet's for ear mites but his ears are clean. I had read online that freezing can be an indication of a serious illness caused due to infestation of mites all the way to the brain. He had picked up some ticks from my pet dog a month ago and had some ticks on the triangle behind his ear for some time but we got rid of the infection within 15 days with the help of his flea comb. Can you please help me understand if I should be alarmed by the freezing behavior?

Lay on your stomach and play with your phone, let him acknowledge you before you acknowledge him, this gives him the freedom of choice to come up and sniff you. I also advise that you have a specific set of clothes that you wear and do this maybe once a day for an hour, this allows him to familiarise the scent of you and allows him to know you are the same person each time. And this may sound gross but only wash the clothes weekly so that the scent of you is still there even after a wash. Within a month you should've noticed a change and you should be able to pet him with no issues and maybe try speaking for a good 5-10 minutes throughout the hour you spend with him. And maybe after two weeks give him half an hour to acknowledge you and then spend the other half an hour acknowledging him and letting or giving him some treats (it doesn't necessarily have to be a treat it could be his favourite vegetable) and speaking with him. You should see a change.

Hey, I'm a young child who is really quite worried about my rabbit. She is a mini rex. If you still read comments, please reply. My bunny will eat and everything, but she will breathe with her head tilted back and heavily, we consulted a vet but the medication they gave her has not seemed to do anything. She will also run around happily, but while she eats, she won't put pressure on her front left paw, this only happens sometimes though. Please do reply and thank you for reading. I am really quite concerned for her health. The reason we don't take her to the vet again is because my mother refuses to. Help!

I started worrying about my rabbit... So at the begining(when we first got him) whenever we got him out of his cage, he always pooped, well not a lot, but he did poop much, but now when we get him out, he never poops(only pees), but I see many poos in his cage. He drinks less water, I think since we bought the current hay we give him, but he is very active when we get him out of the cage(binkies, etc.) Is that something I should worry about? Please I need help... Oh, and also he eats hay as much as he ate earlier...

Hi, I was wondering if I could get your input on something my bunny does.... I adopted her from a shelter about 2 months ago and as soon as I brought her home, a few days later she started having sneezing fits and hasn't stopped since. She has them often throughout the day. She has no discharge around her nose or eyes and have no idea what is causing this. I have tried everything I can think of or find online without success. I was hoping for some enlightenment until I can bring her to the vet. Any ideas about what could be causing this? Thanks!

My rabbit did that too, we joked he was allergic to his own moulting. He grew out of it, just keep an eye on it in case of discharge!

how do you know if your rabbit has thrown up? There is a white dried something in his cage and I am worried he may have thrown up during the day while I was at work. My daughter said he was sneezing today as well. He is acting fine and eating good. any input would be great. thx

My rabbit won’t play, he used to run around a lot and adventure, he’s 1 years old and all he does is sit around and he will sometimes run, he eats a lot of lettuce but he also eat some hay, he doesn’t drink a lot, every time I bring water to him he doesn’t drink, and sometimes I put his water in his cage, the next morning it’s the same level of water as it was when I filled it up, the lettuce is a bit juicy, I think maybe he might not be thirsty because of all that water in the lettuce What do u think ? Plz someone reply

please help, my bunny is just over a year old. this morning I noticed that he had lost a lot of weight and his eyes looked like they were watering, not swallen jus trike a clear fluid, this has stopped. I gave him a carrot before school, when I got home he hadn't touched it, two or three nibbles. I then took him inside where he didn't move, just kind of sat there, after maybe half an hour he did a small poop. I've now put him into his cage but he's not eating. Theirs currently a thunderstorm but the hut is closed in, I hope he's okay, my parents won't let him be inside. Help xx I don't want to take him to the vet because when he pooed I actually thought he might be okay and last time I took my rabbits in and they were put to sleep straight away. I think this rabbits strong, how do I know what it is and how can I make him eat

Im very nervous my rabbit is very hyper usually but today he's been very Lethargic and hasn't eaten in a few hours, I've offered all his favorite teats but he won't eat them. We have someone over the house right now who has a dog, can that be part of it? I might just be crazy because he's not showing any other symptoms of gi stasis. Any ideas? If he's still not eating tomorrow I'm taking him to the vet asap.
