I'm in a rental, it's the fourth day of highs in the negative 8° F. Harman pellet stove auger stop rotating. The first 60 seconds of this video explained everything I need to know. I noticed that the lower half of the flue had an s-turn, and it appeared to be designed for quick removal. I opened it up, and sure enough 65% blocked where the s-turn is horizontal. Thanks man! Now I won't freeze to death!

I just want to say that this video was an absolute lifesaver. After a cleaning of our pellet stove a few days ago the top auger stopped working. I put it in diagnostic mode and swapped the cables on the bottom auger motor and the top auger motor to rule out the auger motor dying (the top auger worked with bottom cables). I then thought that maybe the switch in the hopper door had died so I had that tested (it didn't) then a quick google brought me to this video and using a paper clip confirmed it was the vacuum shut down switch. I don't feel too safe having the system bypassed so I will probably replace that part but I'm amazed that it was something so simple.

I wish I would have started here, as I guess it was the vacuum switch all along. The unusually cold winter here in central WA must have produced too much fly-ash. The stove is 13 years old and this has never happened before. I put a new motor in and could not get it to work. I searched online and found your clip above. So I cleaned all the flyash in the exhaust vent, unplugged then re-plugged the vacuum switch wires, snipped the end of the vacuum tube where it attaches to the exhaust fan, as it was dried and cracked, and now it works! Thanks for this help! I will just keep the old motor on a shelf in the shop for a backup, (and my wife will never know about what I did not know)! Stay well (and well loved)!

Cleaning is the first step. If it has the same problem still you may just have an auger motor that is getting tired and will work for a short while but overheats and shuts down. If the auger motor is really hot when the shut down happens that's a positive sign for a bad motor.

Pellet Stove Pro I have been having a horrible time trying to figure out why my auger motor won't run . I took it out and did a bench test and there wasn't any issue and it ran no problem . Then yesterday poking around trying not to pull my hair out I took the control board that is on the left side out ( it's a plastic box that just slides out ) . When I took that control box out everything worked great ! Auger turned , igniter did its job and then it blew hot air no problem . By sliding out that control box it will ONLY RUN THROUGH THE CYCLE ONCE ! By taking that control box out it will run through one cycle and that's all . I have no idea what's failing or what to do at this point . My pellet stove is also the Quadrafire Mt Vernon (non AE ) model . Thanks so much ! This is a shot in the dark but hopefully you may be able to help me

I just tested the Differential Pressure Switch with a 'paperclip' per your video.....and the auger motor came on !!! I spent all last Saturday and Sunday cleaning the flue, fines box, internal cast iron plates and firebox......all to no avail !! So, I want to thank you again for your excellent video. I found a Harman Accentra parts company and have ordered the replacement Diff. PSI Switch. In the meantime (approx. 3-5 days) do you think I can run the stove with the temporary paper clip bypass? I have secured it tightly and wrapped it very well with electrical tape so it won't short out or come into contact with any nearby wires etc.

My auger just stopped working tonight, so I'm hoping it this simple. But what I dont get is why that one end of the hose keeps drying out. Its not exposed to anymore heat than the other end. In addition, that blower is (presumably if hooked up right) sucking in cold outside air and blowing it into the burn chamber. So even the air the hose is exposed to it cold.

The information was incredible as I am quite mechanically inclined. I jumped the motor and the motor seems to be running just fine. This grill is brand new. I bought it from an outlet store when I fired up the auger and the fan move for maybe 30 seconds and then stop so I’m pretty sure it’s a switch, however it looks like all the switches are on the motherboard the brain board do you know which wires I need to cross to find out if it’s possibly the switch or do I need to just replace the entire controller. Thank you in advance.

Very helpful video! I of course bought a new auger motor before I found this video. I haven't received the motor, so I thought I'd clean the stove and chimney and check to see if the auger motor is getting power. I heard grinding from the auger motor before I ordered it and I just thought it went bad. It turns out, the auger motor isn't getting power. I disconnected the leads from the vacuum switch and connected them. Voila! The auger started turning. Hmm. So how do I know if the vacuum switch is bad or it's sensing something wrong?

Low limit /proof of fire will stop the auger motor after it has already dumped about a handful of pellets into the burn pot. so it will initially dump the pellets and perhaps it will not light them, naturally if it does not light them the proof of fire disk or sensor will not kick the signal along to tell the stove to go into run mode, so it will eventually shut down. if the pellets do light and it goes out I would just try to bypass the low limit/proof of fire snap disk it if has one, some stoves have a thermocouple right inside of the burn pot, other stoves have a glass eye that looks for the flame and that glass eye gets dirty sometimes and needs to be cleaned. It really all depends of what phase the auger is stopping, if it does not move from jump street it is usually a dirty stove/bad vacuum/switch easy to figure out, just bypass the vac switch or a bad auger motor / or an auger jam to prove an auger jam you should just disconnect the auger motor from the auger shaft then with all of the pellets out of the hopper, try to turn the auger with a vice grip or pliers, it should move but could be a little tough if there are even just a few pellets in the flight , now would be a good time to put line voltage to the auger motor though you could keep the auger motor connected and put line voltage to the auger motor to see if it even attempts to spin but I like to remove the auger from the shaft because it is usually an auger jammed up with fine sawdust /wet pellets Good luck people and if any of you have any issues give me a shout, I might be able to save you some time. frustration and a lot of money

Merry Christmas. I have a Quadrafire Castile with a non-working auger. The auger will turn on if I pull the suction tube off of it and gently suck on it. When I reattach it the auger stops. I put a paper clip between the wire ends that attached to the middle of the auger tube. This did nothing. Thoughts?

I figured it out! When I cleaned the stove out I cleaned out the bottom of the hopper. With no pellets in the bottom, it could not produce enough suction to create vacuum in the line. As soon as I blocked the bottom of the hopper with my hand it started to work. Thanks for the video.

I have a Hartman pf100 I thought auger motor went replaced motor and same thing auger blinded up and stopped. I pulled auger out cleaned tube and whole stove including vent piping. Reassembled and motor moves fine until tube is filled with pellets then motor binds up like lack of enough power. Pulled motor off but kept hooked up to 2 wires motor turns but I can stop both motors with minimal hand pressure with pliers on motor stud. Both old and new motors stopped like this. What most likely is causing not enough power to motors?

+Dre Z You can run 120v directly to the motor and see if it turns to confirm the auger motor is good. If it is good then take the two wires off the vacuum switch and connect them together and see if the auger is running. If it is not running then take the two wires off the hi limit switch and connect them together. If it still won't run you have a bad control board.

Auger stopped on a QuadraFire classic bay 1200. I watched your video and decided to empty hopper clean everything and remove auger assembly. I found the nipple for the vacuum switched packed with pellet dust. After cleaning and running the stove for awhile, I noticed that the auger motor spins for 5 seconds, stops for 6 seconds and continues to run like this. My question is- is this normal operation for the auger motor? The stove stays lit and functions, but sometimes it looks like it is not getting enough fuel. Thanks in advance.

We have an Earth Stove MP 35-50. The auger just stopped pushing out pellets. After shutting it off for about 15 mins and cleaning it, it started pushing into the burn pot again. It went for about 10 to 20 mins and again stopped. The hopper is turning the pellets fine. It did start making a screech noise? Maybe a metal on metal grinding noise as it was pushing out pellets. We can't find anything about this pellet stove and of course it's below freezing outside when it stops working! Do you have any ideas what it could be? We just started using a different brand pellets but have burnt about 5 bags so far.

Hmm. That's a tricky one because of the fall. If you just plugged it in one day and it had that problem I would think it would be the control board. But, if the fall caused some sort of short circuit in the wiring and that is still bad, then you'll fry the new control board you put in. Before putting a new control board it I would inspect the wiring carefully and use an ohm meter to make sure no wires are grounding to the frame of the stove except for the ground wire. Hope that helps.

This sounds similar to my problem on a St-Croix Prescott. I get very inconsistant pellet feed. On the highest level 5 ,I can keep a decent flame going but the fire cycles from good and healthy to short and barely out of the fire pot. On lower heat levels the pellets run out and the fire eventually burns out. I saw a good video on taking the auger + auger motor out to clean and lubricate but I was wondering if a motor could simply get lazy? Could it turn slower than design speed as it gets old?

Thanks Jason, I will order a new auger motor BUT.. As I followed one video's cleaning method, it included checking the rotation speed of the auger by marking a dot on the auger blade with a sharpie and timing it's full rotation time. Turns out mine was rotating at 1 RPM. I bought the stove used and it appears the auger motor had been replaced with the wrong part. All replacement motors for my stove are 2 RPM which would absolutely explain my problems. So.. I have a perfectly good 1 RPM motor for sale if anyone wants it!

You could buy an inline fuse and install it on the wiring going to the motor and then run direct power from a wall socket. But the fuse on most pellet stoves is just for the igniter circuit so I would try disconnecting the igniter and see if the fuse will hold.

  • @MisterWhippy4win

    @MisterWhippy4win

So, I disconnected the power to the 2 blowers, igniter and auger motor. Hooking each on up separately, only the auger motor blew the fuse. To further test, I hooked everything BUT the auger motor up, put a small handful of pellets in the box and turned on the stove. It ignited the pellets, no blown fuse. I removed the auger motor and hooked it up directly to a grounded power cord, plugged into a grounded, protected power strip. When I turned on the power, the windings flashed and that was it. I'm assuming a short in the motor windings. I ordered the universal motor from you guys on amazon, its from a Breckwell P1000 Big E

At this point I decided to trace the wires for the fuse and the red button on the back to the control panel and unscrew the terminals and just readjust the wire to sit flush on the terminal and re tighten them and like magic it has been working for the last 2 weeks. Maybe all the heat close by caused the terminals to loosen over time. Hope this comment helps anyone else. Thank you Jason for all your advice.
