HOW TO know if you HEAR HIGH FIDELITY MUSIC. (The real deal) (Parental Advisory :F-Bombs)

So here is my attempt at describing what a killer stereo rig sounds like. Hopefully this will help to get you on the right track. Yes use your own ears and buy what sounds good to to you. These are a few pointers and my description of how to know when the sound is truly first rate .
Realize for the most part people and equipment are off in 2 main groups .
Those that prefer easy going background sort of soft or warm sound that does not necessarily engage the brain, and the others that like detailed, well defined, accurate sound that is impossible to not engage with as it sounds lucidly real and present. This is harder to get just right but nothing beats the experience to me . Determine what type you are and half the gear gets removed from your option list. organic dark sound if you want to read a book with the music on. Window to the spirit if you want to engage and critique on a deep level.

    Hello Mike. Just found your channel. Great information and thank you for sharing. I have been chasing hi-fi for over 15 years now. I have learned one major lesson in my journey and that is ‘good sound is all about the listener and not the gear’. To clarify, we all hear differently, both the ears and the mind’ and what one person can hear the one next to them may not. I have said to people before ‘did you hear that guitar string being picked or that cymbal and they couldn’t or didn’t notice it. Listening and hearing is very personal to each of us. The way the audio is mixed or created is on thing. How we hear it is another one entirely.

    Best explanation ever! Thank you so much Mike. I am with you with every word and I can feel you when you close your eyes and explain what its all about. Magic. I had systems years ago that could recreate a mind-blowing experience when you just sat down for a couple of hours just listening to an full album from start to end - when did that happen lately? I am to distracted right now, thinking to much about bass response in room and trying to sit in the middle trying to catch the dead center and just change songs all the time as it is something that does not involve me enough to stay... I am struggling with a new rig to get to the real involvement, but I have a path to walk... I am trying to mix cinema with "true" Hi-Fi and that is a challenge for sure! I am a panel guy so I have walked through Logans, Apogee Scintilla and now Magnepans, but I need to look through my front end (DAC and preamp) perhaps... I will keep changing gears to my last breath I guess. I am on a budget these days so its all about second hand investments, but that is part of the fun for me. Cheers!

    That's a tough mix, I have one system in my living room that's used for movies, there I have a sub. In a smaller room I have my music system, no sub. My bottom cabs have (2) 6.5 inch woofers each, It doesn't have the same extreme lows but things like a stand up bass sound so real which is not so much with the sub'd system. My stuff is all second hand. Don't need to buy new to get there. My favorite amp on my music sys was an old solid state Macintosh, when Edison blew it up I bought a new Belles and was never as happy. When the left channel went DC I replaced it with a new Emotiva, Less than half the cost of the Belles and sounds much more like the Mac. I've found one key element for realism is for your speakers to dissapear, like the sound comes from around and thru them not from them.

    Hi Mike and Happy New Year, Just discovered your U-Tube channel through our e-mail Audiophile group and thought I'd add in my .03 cents worth (inflation)! I've been a searching audio nut these past 47 years and greatly appreciate your "teachings" for those who haven't gone through that "experience/journey" yet! My music past covers 25 total years, with 10 years classical piano study, 5 years of music degree and 10 years of instrumental music teaching! I've studied and performed on every wind, string, keyboard and percussion instrument, with another 2 years of vocal performance! I KNOW what non-amplified acoustical music sounds like! After hearing a very fine "great system" setup in an audio salon in 1980 (Audio Research and Rogers LS3/5A's), I was hooked on reproduced sound! 😃 My personal journey on the "MAGIC" of 2-channel stereo has taken me a Long Time, but the journey has been worth it! Maybe due to my current components, my dedicated intimate small listening room dimensions, my genre of music, my hearing, my musical background or a Synergistic Balance of all the above, I currently have Acoustical Soundstage Depth (depending on the music/recording), that goes from 2ft (front wall behind my monitor baffles) all the way out to 50ft (through bedroom #2 and out into the West property)!! Front presentation width can be 20+ ft laterally and 50ft in height! The soundstage extends Well Beyond any of my music room boundaries (9ftw x 10ftl x 11fth)! The recorded venue appears in all its sonic glory, with dropping jaws and wide-eyed stares into the musical spacial abyss that can be easily heard beyond my stand monitors. Live acoustical recordings sound LIVE as I’m transported into the space/time of the original venue, intimately there with the musicians and all their creative art, emotions and meaning! My room/speakers/components disappear in a complete divorcing act that leaves nothing but You and the Music…Audio Nirvana Rules!!! The kicker is, this great auditory illusion happens day or night, eyes wide open or closed with almost any genre...Believe I've finally achieved my goal of, "LIVE, I AM THERE"!!! 😁 For many, may not be “their thing,” but for me (with my experiences in music study, degree, live performance, and teaching), a goal that I’ve been trying to achieve these past 47 years!!! Keep the Audio/Music knowledge coming Mike, sharing will certainly impact those who are willing to "LISTEN"!!! 😉 Ted

    The best thing about having my dual Rel subs positioned near the corners behind my sweet spot... (basically almost out of view) is that when friends or guests come over and I wack some low frequency tracks on and then they automatically look at my small speakers and I know exactly what they're thinking... how the hell are those little speakers sounding so huge! Then I think to myself oh yeah that's how its done 😁

    Good explanation Mike, I like your channel and what you are trying to do. Appears you have hung out in several recording studios and have heard alot of gear. I have yet to go to an equipment show, but Ive been in the hobby since the early 70s when my dad and his audio buddies all had multiple hi end systems in their homes. I also grew up in band and play a few instruments...It also helps to know what real acoustic and amplified instruments sound like in a variety of environments! Im 66 years old and have seen alot of live music shows in small venues with decent room acoustics. One can also look up what frequency ranges different instruments typically play at. Also like most audio geeks I have a few different systems in my house, bought and built kits, speakers and electronics...heathkit, bottlehead, pi, parts express, madisound...I have a closet full of drivers and parts! The best systems are often a mix of home made and commercial products...is often home made or built by individuals who have started boutique companies. I guess Ive been into this hobby long enough to have developed a network of like minded folks, most of which are pretty smart, all of which have built their own speakers and/or electronics. Remember the good ole days when folks would hang out at each ithers homes, just to listen to albums/music?!

Like your go to example for hearing the bass tones, or ones for width/depth of the soundstage, great midrange examples, and so on. There's a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: As government expands, liberty contracts." - RR 1/11/1999 Excellent breakdown of what to listen for. Tweaking the bass to remove the boomyness is key as it’s easy to drown out the other frequencies. Your mid-freq description is on point when you describe the reverberation that you want to hear in the instrument. That’s one of the finest pleasures in listening to music when that characterization of it stands out.

    Mike - this is truly one of the best videos on sound and politics I’ve ever watched. So much too agree with here. I totally agree, for instance, to know if you are getting good sound from your rig you MUST listen to LIVE music as much as possible. If your friend plays even just a little bit of piano have her play a song for you - it tells you so much. Seems obvious but I’m convinced people just don’t know what to listen for and make crazy sounding systems that aren’t even close to real music. As to politics, yep, we need to get involved and start having REAL conversations about our society and not put people in boxes based on race, gender, religion, age etc. Those things are “protected” under the law but not in practice. Anyway, bravo - well done!

    Perfect Mike, thank you - - an additional comment to your description of "bass" - - my take on your explanation about the bass is excellent, but a person with less experience may not realize that bass "can" be directional in the sense of, again, source dependent, where the bass track is panned within the mix, it's not always dead nuts center, even more so with early recordings where they didn't have "panning", so early stereo stuff can be simple 3 channel - center, left, right - - and if the bass player was put in a left or right channel, that should be obvious in the imagining. So, although the sound may be emanating throughout the room as you described, "where" the bass player actually is in the image put together by the engineer/producer should be obvious in a reasonable system IMHO.

  • @OCDHIFiGuy

    @OCDHIFiGuy

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, thats true and a good distinction, what I did not clarify was that the omnipresent non locatable bass was the subsonic stuff below bass guitar as "bass fill" , then as we go up there are the bass guitar notes for sure either left or right and the bass fill I speak of is not center either. Its right center and left all together. . Thanks for mentioning that so I could clarify ..

    Awesome video Mikey! I could relate to every single point. That feeling you get when your brain believes you are in that crowd is like a drug. It gives you goosebumps. When you hear that instrument sound like it’s there in the room with you it starts the emotions going. Sibilance is my biggest annoyance. I’ve managed to get my rig to a point now where most of my music collection is sibilance free but on the few recordings that I still hear it (Marvin Gaye What’s going on for example) I can’t help wondering…. does this sound free of sibilance on a better system? Or is it just in the recording and my system is faithfully reproducing it?

    @OCDHIFiGuy

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Beeb, :you said Learnin Sperience why do I have the feeling we would crack each other up big time ? Shiiii. OK, so the issue in your question is I dont have enough info. I would want to know the crossover points and the slopes where they sit now. and what slope is the dial for adjustment . we also want a way to high pass the main speakers when Bi-amping with a plate amp that has adjustable crossover . The idea is you do NOT want the main speakers and sub making the same frequency, so based on that alone you would set your sub at 35 with a 4th order low pass filter. if you could high pass the mains then you could try a higher number since you would not be overlapping too badly

    With all due respect sir, and of course I mean you no offense, what people think is good sound is entirely personal and subjective, it's their preference. I know my mom likes the sound coming out of the TV more than my full-range audio system. She thinks my subwoofer is just noise, and I do know how to set it up right to integrate the sound with the main speakers. I imagine a lot of people like the sound they get out of a boombox, or their bass-thumping car, horrible as we might think it to be. Secondly, nothing exists in a vacuum and it's all relative, that is to say, we can only know one thing, one system from another when we hear them and compare them, and whether a person knows why and can articulate it or not, they can probably tell which system they like more. That's just a way of saying, a person knows good sound when they hear it, relative to another system, they may not know how to explain it or say why, but they know it when they hear it. But most importantly, and again, I mean you no offense, honestly, but I think most people simply will not be able to understand what you are saying, they simply cannot hear what you are describing without a great deal of experience with active listening and practice. Although it's clearly a bit exaggerated in analogy here, it's kind of like telling a blind person how to see, or rather, teaching a deaf person how to hear properly. Case in point, I tried to teach someone about soundstage and imaging, in my opinion, two of the most important and defining characteristics of high-end audio, and really, two that should be the most obvious which immediately stand out. I mean, lower-end stuff simply doesn't do it well or at all, and a setup that images well should be awe-inspiring to someone who hasn't heard it before. And although I probably could have explained it better, the person simply could not hear what I was trying to tell her about hearing the instruments sounding like they're in a certain location, pointing out the separation(as well as the clarity of the sound), they couldn't understand the idea of a "soundstage," the 3D/holographic quality of the sound emanating from the speakers, how it not only projects forward from the speakers, but also expands outward and back as well, has a depth to it. They could not sense the almost tangible presence of the sound, particularly of vocals, how it almost feels like there's someone in the room. I mean, compared to lesser setups, this should be obvious, especially to someone who hasn't experienced it before. I know for me, the first time I heard good imaging, I was completely blown away by what could be achieved by good speakers and setup, it's just a completely different experience from listening to poor speakers/lesser audio systems. Simply put, if they cannot hear such a thing as that, they're simply not going to get things like frequency response and roll-off, flat curves, balanced tonality, stuff like that. I'm not saying people cannot learn, but it is difficult to teach, and speaking frankly, a lot of people just don't care.

Name the song and artist and describe what we should be hearing ,describe the layering physically on camera stand where the instrument are and the vocalist is standing ,that way we can listen to the song on our rigs and determine if we have our systems set up correctly. Long video. I started writing a comment early on that we would be better served listening to actual instruments rather than you trying to explain it but waited and sure enough at about 13:25 into it….bamm, you suggested it. A couple things, I don’t agree with you on the low bass slight concussive feel you get generally. It really depends on the instrument..pipe organ, no..drums, yes..double bass, yes, etc. A tough subject to tackle for sure. That irritating frequency that rings my ears is probably a little lower…closer to an ambulance siren. I feel you on your final topic. It’s cray cray. What piece of gear is most responsible for presenting the realism? DAC, Streamer, amp, preamp, speaker, etc? Lastly, I think we make changes that don’t necessarily make the sound better, just different, but because it’s noticeable we interpret as better. Okay, I’m done…good talk

    @@OCDHIFiGuy What speakers do you recommend? jk ; ) Seriously though, I am looking for new speakers to replace the B&W DM601 S2 bookshelves I've had for the last 15 or so years, they're 6.5-inch kevlar woofers and 1-inch aluminum tweeter, speakers which I do like, though they are nowhere near as good as the Series 3s I was wanting to buy. I bought the S2s used thinking they would be close, but they're really not. Hopefully, you're familiar with these speakers, or at least the B&W signature sound, if there is such a thing. For what it's worth, I did hear/audition B&W 805s (bookshelves) in person before my local hi-fi shop closed up many years ago(before I bought my 601s) and I have to say, I absolutely hated them. It's hard to explain, but I used Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries to audition, I wanted a complex piece of music to test various aspects of the speakers, and I swear, it separated the music in a bad way like I have never heard any speaker do, to me, it really felt/sounded like there were five different speakers playing, and not in harmony/synchronization with each other, it wasn't coherent at all. I honestly believed the DM601 S3s sounded better, for me, they are probably the best speakers I have ever heard in person, but I cannot say that I have heard all that much high-end gear, there aren't a lot of hi-fi shops where I live. Personally, as a very thoughtful, analytical, and discerning/critical listener(I actually take great pleasure in critiquing music as I listen, I like to listen with the score in hand in fact and wanted to be a conductor at one time), I prefer a more detailed and revealing speaker, leaning forward and a bit on the bright side, but not too much, I do like a little warmth and definitely body, meaning a more balanced sound, not U/V-shape, good mid-range. My problem with the B&Ws is they are just a bit thin sounding, a bit etched on the top end, and at 70hz, obviously, not enough bass extension, but I did run a sub. I should let you know that I prefer a bookshelf/standmount speaker, personally, I have never heard a floorstanding speaker which I've liked, I've always thought they sounded a bit boomy/bloated in the mid-bass and not clear enough on the top end. Anyway, I have a complicated situation actually, I'm torn between upgrading and downsizing. I mean, I can't decide whether I want to upgrade my system or downsize, it depends on the day. I suppose, on the right day, my max budget for upgrading would be about $800 on speakers, maybe $1,000, but I'd like to hear some recommendations in the $5 - $600 range too. I live alone in an apartment, have my stereo 2.1 system set up in my medium-sized living room and mostly listen at moderate volumes. I like classical music, like both very large and small scale pieces(I'm a failed musician, was never good enough to make a career of it), but lately have gotten more into popular music too, mostly 80s and 90s stuff I remember hearing on the radio growing up, I am an older millennial born in the early 80s. I used to use a Classe preamp connect to fully-balanced Monarchy Audio monoblocs until one caught one fire, and I downgraded many years ago and now just use an entry-level Marantz CD player and integrated stereo amp. My sub broke a few years ago, but I was fortunate enough to get another last year, the one I wanted, a 10-inch Klipsch which is decent finally went on sale for $100 less than the usual price, but it poses a problem now because I don't know how to connect it to my amp, it only has RCA inputs where my amp only does speaker level out. I've run the sub off a cheap desktop 2.1 amp, but I'm looking for another proper "audiophile" amp. After hearing good things about Emotiva(from the Cheap Audio man and others) I'm seriously considering their BasX TA-100 integrated along with one of their flex subs. The question which I haven't been able to answer over the years is which speakers to get to replace my B&Ws. So if you don't mind my asking, here you go, which speakers do you recommend based on what I've said? P.S. I also just bought a very cheap, but what I think is also a very good DAC, it's motivated me to revisit some music and allowed me to hear previously unknown details to my great astonishment and joy; I never thought a simple DAC could make such an audible improvement in sound quality, it really has amazed me.

    Very cool explanation of good sound from an emotional perspective, but where is the science. There very much is a science but also art to good sound and while I have just recently discovered your videos I haven’t seen you tackle the tools necessary to create good sound. Calling frequency response first grade lessons is slightly disheartening to hear. Frequency response and room interaction while basic is essential to good sound in my opinion. If your speakers can’t properly reproduce across the spectrum your dead in the water from the start. You just briefly touched on room interaction at the end of the video and your room is just as important as some insanely overpriced speakers for truly great sound. I did appreciate your comment on taking your mind out of the equation and just listening. Your mind is a sneaky mofo and will automatically fill in missing information to trick you into thinking you are hearing a complete source. Hence the reason you walked into a room and thought it sounded good and when the tools came out you saw that it was wrong. I come from the live sound world and one of the first things I was taught was trust your ears but confirm with your tools. Always good times in the wonderfully subjective world of audio.
