How To Kill Short Forehands in Tennis Lesson #1 of 2 (Before Contact)

How To Kill Short Forehands in Tennis Lesson - Part 1 of 2 (Before Contact). Fed up of missing easy balls in tennis? Putting away short balls looks easy and the pro's certainly know how to do it, but there are 3 main phases that you must train in order to start finishing points successfully. Download our FREE forehand guide here: www.top-tennis-training.com/f...
1. Before Contact - it is important to improve your anticipation and ability to spot the oncoming short ball and react quickly in starting the movement forward. Knowing the correct footwork pattern in getting up to the ball and how to position yourself when you get there will buy you time to set up for the ball.
2. During Contact (will be covered in part 2) - to execute the shot you need the correct footwork and technique while hitting the ball to make sure you can get power and accuracy on the ball.
3. After Contact (will be covered in part 2) - knowing where to recover depending on where you have hit your shot and if you are coming forward or staying back is a vital part of the execution which will help take the pressure off having to take high risks trying hit a winner, instead you can position yourself in a way to make the odds of winning the point heavily in your favour.

If you could, could you please make a video about how we could correct beginner mistakes (such as racquet face changing to open mid-swing, or knowing the contact-point, changing grips, controlling direction to avoid hitting balls out of the court, dealing with wrist/hand pain etc.)? Indeed great video, though what often happens is that you make a mistake when you think you gonna make killer :) mid distance is more challenging to lift the ball up or actually to return a powerful shot back, because you basically have to apply very reasonable lvl of top spin not to hit out. Maybe few drills to play from this distance could nice continuation for this lesson. Personally, the most consistent for me is to slice and to make opponent run or try to play along the net. In any case the midline area is somewhat challenging

Great video, great tips, guys. I really struggle with these short balls, mine tend to fly past the baseline. They look so easy to a non-player. Getting them /in/ isn't hard, but putting them away, consistently, is hard. Will be putting this to use in an upcoming match after drilling it in for a bit. Thanks again for the great content!

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Hey Simon -- one of the many things I notice that you and Alex do so well is the footwork. I've never video'ed myself, but I'll bet anything that when on the baseline, I side-step instead of cross-over step to move laterally, and I've seen you guys explain footwork patterns in the context of other topics. So maybe a topic on footwork drills, recognizing and internalizing when what kind of footwork (small adjustment steps, large cross over steps, etc.) is needed. By the way, recently I had the 1 year anniversary of purchasing TTT's "Tennis Drills Revolution" course and the exercises were tough but so helpful. Very worthwhile $97 spent, not sure if it's more now, I jumped on it in March 2020 when everything went lockdown. Thanks guys!

About a month ago I got my Hydrogen Sports Proton ball machine, and literally 3 guys who own Slinger machines where I play have put in orders for a Proton once they saw and used it. Would be nice to see TTT's impressions / review of that machine, it's still a bit under the radar.

Another amazing video thanks! Any advise for not over hitting short balls? I find that the momentum from running, having to lift the ball over the net (swinging upwards if the ball is low), the shorter distance to the base line and getting carried away by the attacking situation makes me over hit these balls very often. What I'm trying to do is just play a good shot instead of a winner and try to get ready for the next shot, still over hitting a lot.

Even though I hit the ball with more pace, he doesn’t have to move very far since I can’t stop hitting to the middle, even on short balls where he would just lob it over my head and make me look bad😭😭😭

I’m a d2 collegiate athlete but struggle immensely with consistency of play on the forehand. I can beat 11 utr players one day and then the next day I can lose to an 8 utr mainly Bc of my forehand. I’ve tried everything and nothing seems to work. What should I do. I use a semi western grip with a straight arm at contact naturally

What if I've trained for over a decade and short balls are deadly for me? I'm not allowed to go past the baseline. Standing between the fence and the baseline is okay though. If anything, in emergency situations I can jump slightly past the baseline to lightly tap the ball back to the opponent then retreat again.
