    Something that really helps me is making sure I bend at the knees rather than the hips & stay low through the follow through. It helps to tell yourself that you have to bend your knees more than you think you do.

    In your example, you got the time to make it to the ball. I struggle with very short balls when I am way back on the line. trying to scramble forward. I barely make it to the ball, at that point the ball is too low and still a foot or so ahead of me, the only thing I can do is 'scoop it' from under the ball with the racket with my arm extended in front of me. but this always gives an easy , simple ball to my opponent to slam it. Is there a way to handle this kind of short balls ?

    I think this missed the point of "low" balls. When it is hit with a lot of bottom spin and very low angle, with good pace, sometimes it slides and doesn't bounce up very high at all. I sometimes get so low my knee drags on the ground to get under it and swing up for a top spin like you suggest, but other times there just isn't enough room to get the racquet lower than the ball, even with it hitting the ground sometimes. In those situations I usually slice it or open the racquet face and just guide it back but try to change the angle so it isn't just giving the point away, or lob if the opponent is moving forward. The slice is the easiest for me and I can give it some side spin to confound their efforts too.

    Good tip Ian, so it's a kind of "hook" the ball from low to high to lift the ball over the net clearly. I'll do it next time thank you.

    I think my problem is about positioning myself. When I run through a short ball I usually happen to be moving in too much so I make errors. Also not to make mistakes ( but which ends up with making mistakes) i slow my swing, to the point of not doing a full swing.

    Hi, Ian, what grip would you suggest for this shot? It looks like you're hitting with a semi-western? My grip is pretty extreme western. Thanks!

  • @ROrneli
    @ROrneli5 жыл бұрын

    I have a semi western grip and I have an opponent that always hits a low short slice to my forehand , this opponent is very fast and skinny and if i don't hit a perfect shot he will get to it and lob it or hit a passing shot, it is frustrating because i play much better in all other areas but this is always his get out of jail card, if he hits it to my back hand i can usually low slice where he can't do anything with it and i can volley or slice it, forehand slicing seems harder to me. I am a strong 4.0 middle of the pack 4.5 player. tips?

    What is the reverse follow through and is it useful at anytime? Could you do a video on this please?

  • @markeroon

    @markeroon

    5 жыл бұрын

    The reverse forehand is the Nadal shot -- follow through with the racket coming up to your head on the side that you made contact, as opposed to following through across your body. When you see a player follow through and the racket "wraps around" their head, that's a reverse forehand.

    Im an ex pro. Have always had a fear of short balls as i hit to well from the back set the point up then cant hit a short ball as ive missed so many it is now a negs shot every time I get one. I have a westy forehand though so its more the hip or below hips i choke on. Anything shoulder heights easy winner. Will give it a go for hitting up. But always actually found i cant hit through it at waist height get so tight so hitting a full swing is what i struggle with as I pull it

    Hey Ian, I have a question that I would really appreciate to see you discuss. I'm a teenager who hasn't been playing for so long, but my skills have been improving really quickly so a while ago my coach suggested I take part in the next non-professional tournament at our tennis club. I would really love to do it but unfortunately I am a really anxious person, even when I'm playing just for practice I somehow manage to get anxious before I even get on court. I was wondering, would you consider making a tips video on how not to be nervous during your first tournament? I won't mind if I lose as long as I know that I gave it my best, but I feel like that won't happen unless I get some tips, since I get giddy just thinking about it. Thanks in advance!

    technique is 50% success, another 50% is directing/placing the ball; ..should we play down the line (short or to the baseline), tight cross? after go to net or back to baseline? ..you may show for ex. three ideas based or not on pro's and show drills to it.. generally you may show more tactics training drills.. 3-4 shots combo..

    I have a question, Most of my coaches say Im playing really relaxed, which is good cuz I dont get frustrated whenever I miss a shot. But they tell me that if I played with more adrenaline I would be way better, but thats when I strat to get frustrated. So... How can I deal with this??

  • @EssentialTennis

    @EssentialTennis

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Diego R. MacKenzie Diego, I don't want to put words into their mouths, but maybe they're saying play with a little more aggression. Meaning, go for a bit more. Being relaxed and even keel is tough to do, but you don't want to just sit back and get balls in play. At some point you want to be aggressive!

  • @temtongu9481

    it's better to move through the ball in order to rush the net after a short ball. don't always rip at short balls though because they'll go long. instead, just shift your swing more vertical.

  • @theeachuisge

    @theeachuisge

    Tem Tongu i think i move too much into the ball (wrong positioning) and to keep it slow, i do not do a complete swing but just push the ball. I don't know how to fix these.

    Thanks Ian. My name is Anubhav from India and I have recently started watching you videos and I think you really breakdown all the feelings and techniques into a good set of words which explain them. I could not find where to post for ask Ian, so i am asking my query through this comment. I would like to understand how to hit or tackle high bouncy deep balls. These shorts annoy me and I am not dealing with them correctly. Do I need to cut them short on the rise or go back and hit them from the fence? Also when this happens there more than couple of short exchanges that happen before the point is over or the ball settles, so I think that there something missing in my bag of shots or technique to deal with these type of balls. Do I need to come forward and take it on like a drive volley ? If yes, how to build confidence in that and how to judge when to come forward. It would be great if you can make a video on that or may be talk about it a bit. Thanks in advance. 🙏
