Sometimes you gotta be quiet and learn. Old folks might not know it all but they know a lot.
Big dogs and short bars don't belong together in hardwood. You need every inch you can get to reach the centers of those big trees

I always pulled them off. If your chain is sharp, ya don't really need them. And they take some reach away, like you said. They are nice when you are doing firewood.
