Thanks for being so honest about the potential pitfalls of cruising and how to avoid them. Frankly, I truly admire you both for how honest you have been with your mistakes, your emotional and mental needs and the other difficulties you have faced. ...and it can't be easy knowing that some meathead in his basement that went camping once when he was 12 now has the expertise to tell you that "you guys are too soft to be sailors and should go back to your regular jobs as quality control testers at the fluffy pillow factory" or something like that. And bonus points for calling BS on the online therapy industry that is borderline malpractice in many cases. I am not a cruiser, but I am a recent retiree, and going from 10 hours a day of "me time" to zero hours has been similarly challenging. Several of your videos about relationship challenges aboard a boat have hit at a time when I was losing it because of 24/7 "us time." Keep telling your stories in the way that you want. Great video! I have a feeling that you and me are very similar same as Will and Ryan :) ... I totally agree - separate work trips, family trips help a lot, and having one business but with very different roles in it is also the key. And a BIG yes to NOT having plastic dishes or cups on the boat... it's your home (took me a while to explain it to Will :))

I found that while spending 10 weeks on our boat with my husband and dog, it was more about wanting to throw his 'stuff' overboard more so than him. Small spaces mean that everything needs to be put away when not in use.

One of the things we really appreciate about your channel is the **HONESTY** and **TRANSPARENCY** of your content. Trolls are gonna troll, but anyone that has actually lived on a boat knows that it's not all bikinis and sundowners. Sophie; you do an admirable job of mixing your charm, beauty, and humour together to tell the truth about your experience. It seems like you don't really take the comments about negativity to heart and I really want to beg you to NEVER let them get you down. We especially appreciated the advice to *TAKE A BREAK*. Full time ANYTHING dulls our senses and reduces the joy that we can derive from life, and planning from the start to cruise for seasons rather than permanently is probably the best advice you can give anyone considering your lifestyle. Keep up the good work!

Sophie this probably will make me sounds less than enlightened but I really enjoy your videos where you cook on board. Having someone on board that enjoys and knows how to make delicious meals is a big “benefit” and may move the distance between the cost and benefits towers a few more clicks. Btw the irony is not lost on me you showed Sailor James in the video. He started his sailing adventure married to a wonderful person. He even had a dog that was pretty cool. He lost both for sailing on KZread. In the universe I live in this would be considered a failure. Ryan on the other hand has has a wonderful relationship with a cute French girl, a job that seems to be going in the right direction, gets to eat like king on occasion and has onboard someone that cares about his well being. Oh and he has learned a lot about plumbing. Seems like Ryan won the KZread jackpot.

I love your honest videos Sophie! We decided to live on land for the winter because of the bills. Heating a boat in norway in this economy got us into debt last year, which we only got out of in october. Luckily I have an off grid cabin which costs the same in a year to heat than it did a month in the marina, even with a dieselheater. I love these thick insulated walls and double glazed windows soo much, lol. Its been -28 C the past weeks where our boat is!! I LOVED living on the water last winter, its so peaceful and beautiful, but heating an uninsulated boat in the nordics is expensive!!

I have to thank my wife for convincing me that we are “not selling the house to buy a boat”. We are both still encouraged to embark on this adventure, and we are looking to downsize to a smaller house, but we are not giving up land life. Future compromises will be interesting.

I think that’s wise! Unless you have quite a bit of experience of part time cruising, it’s very hard to know what it is exactly that you commit to before you leave the dock. Maybe you’ll be happy that you kept a foot in the housing market, or maybe in a few years you’ll decide to sell the house, but at least you’ll have options :) just my opinion! 😅

My husband and I have a boat which we co-own with my parents. We enjoy the boat during some weekends (by far no all) and for longer vacation, since we have limited time. I can totally relate to everything you say. For us, it’s the cost of maintenance, where we and my parents spent many, many weekends maintaining it. We all enjoy the work, but I can relate to the downs when I would just rent out a boat for the vacation and have a great weekends at a hotel. But then again, I am not a hotel person… On vacation, we love our together time, but I stand up paddle, while my husband is fishing. A routine we keep on most of the nights on the anchor. I can also sooo relate to alertness on the boat, this is definitely something, people who don’t own a boat cannot understand. I am a sound sleeper, but on the boat (I was on boats since I was 6), I can hear during the night wind direction shift. My hubby says I am a dolphin, half of the brain awake, half sleeping. Most people probably won’t appreciate this video, but for me, it’s top 3 sailing Utube videos for sure and I watch a lot. This is also my longest Utube comment ever. Love to both of you, stay exactly the same ❤

We're in the in-between. My partner has been a liveabaord for 16 or so years now, I've been living aboard for about 10 years (we were boath liveaboards when we met). We're both working - partner goes to the boatyard, I work from home - as in, from my boat. We've been 'floating apart together' like this for 7 or 8 years now. It's hard enough sometimes living aboard when you each have your own boat, even when only sailing during the summer months and living in our home marina when not sailing. Especially now in winter ... We're now selling our boats (one down, one left to go) and saving every € we can to buy an Amel Super Maramu, and we'll be moving in together ... Yikes! 😉 The ASM is a 53ft center cockpit, which means that we'll both have our own cabin and private / personal space. We think each of us having our own cabin greatly enhances our life expectancy 😁 My 2 cents: before you slip the lines and go cruising full time, make sure you've lived aboard for at least a year and have spent a few months in both a warm and colder climate, spending time on the hook and in marinas and see how that goes first. I was in the military for a number of years, and trust me, there were a few roommates I very much wanted to punch out- the court martial that would have followed was the only reason I didn’t. 😊. Thank you for making a video like this. I already knew that cruising was not all rainbows and butterflies, but it's nice to see a slice of reality. I will check out your website because, even though I have been sailing for over 30 years and have been planning to go cruising about that long, I know that there are gaps in my knowledge. I have always felt that the more you know, the more you know how little you know.

I was LOLing when Sophie told Ryan to get out off the water - and we could see the sh!t coming. It also reminded of the Delos episode "Our toilet exploded", so hilarious, like at a literal ROFL level.

Thanks for sharing, Sophie and Ryan. Very insightful and interesting (even for a 45+ male watching sailing channels 😉😉). As we're ready to cast off soon, we're happy some of that wisdom you did not have laid out for you in 2016 is at least now available for us. Much appreciated, really!

This is an excellent video with great insight gained through doing the hard yards(aka nautical miles!!) and thanks for sharing. I have sent the link to sailing mates of mine who are embarking on this journey in the next while. We have (by chance, got off our yacht for four months each year for hurricane season ..... which was an idea that we did not realise at the time would be so beneficial in so many respects and also makes you so grateful to get back to the yacht after the break! It is also an advantage to have a complimentary skill set that each person brings to the voyage and lifestyle! Sophia ......... you have a wicked sense of humour which really lifts your videos!

Very levelheaded video like always. A lot of good tips and insights that I think are useful for land life as well. Thanks for being so honest and transparent about your feelings towards “yolo” and selling your house. I think the yolo narrative usually hides the downsides and regrets but having this reality check helps people make more sound and well thought of decisions.

Hi Sophie Not a sailing related question. I live about 6 hours by train from Paris. Sometime when it is a bit warmer we are planning on taking the TGV into Paris for 3 days. My current plan is to stay at the Tribourg in 3rd Arrondissement to visit an old friend. Will arrive Gare Paris est. Any changes you would suggest. I don't know Paris at all. By the way. I had wanted to do the sailing life for the last 15 years. Now, I think I will look for a place on land to winter rather than a boat to travel the Aegean and Med in. Best, Mark Hutchins

The 3rd arrondissement is lovely, you will have a great time! Some highlights would be "le marché des enfants rouges" , "la terrasse des archives", "Place des Vosges", my absolute favorite coffee shop in the world: "Café Partisan" and so many other small restaurants and cafés. It is a very central neighborhood, and I am sure you'll have a blast!

I understand that when going from city life to boat life everything changes but in practice i think going from life on a small holding to living on a yacht is less of a change , one example you are out in the forest cutting firewood and there is an equipment failure you can not joust leave it there you have to improvise and get it back to base and then fix it you're self redyeing on foreign expertise is simply to expensive both on a yacht and a small holding.

Something you may think odd for a Solo Sailor is the importance of having a boat with two heads and Showers Why ? Because - Enertainment - at Anchor you will have Guests on board, and one Toilet Shower just doesn't cut the Mustard. However a Third toilet akmost Never getscused, and it is ok if the second Toilet is a manual flush Seawater only, just for ease ofvrepair and servicing, just remember to do a Spirit Vinegar Soak of all the tubing regularly, to remove the Limescale, though a soak with a nice concentrated Bleach regularly also helps prevent boat smells. Lots of cold beers drunk by guests, ups the footvtraffic to the heads and if inly One heads, you'll get queues. 🤔 Ive got to ask Darrell of Island Packet if a small Day heads at the bottom of the companionway can be squeezed in on the IP 349 as I might try one ofvthose if it can be done. Fingers crossed. 🤔 Bob. 🌟🌟🌟❤

I have a question about intimacy between partners living on a boat permanently... how much does it differ to land life?

Well for me, theShe in my Life is my Boat (and I'm still presently Boatless Ugh ) so She gets Pampered and receives lots of tlc . With it all being about the hourney and the Destinations are the Bonus and the Breaks. 80% of a Cruisers time is spent at Anchor Remember? and when I am not on my boat or even don't have a boat, I get Grouchy as a result - it's the Briney in the Blood thing, and not actually insanity, and to get a Firearms Licence in Britain, I had to prove that Im totally Sane - Buzz Kill or Whaaaat? Frankly, a touch of Crazy helps to Confirm just how Sane you are, Crazy like really quick on a Motorbike, or realising that Sailing in the Mediterranean these days, is Stark Raving Bonkers - If you had experienced Sailing it in the 1960's and 1970's when even Ibiza ( apart from the really Dippy Hippies element ) , Italy, Sardinia Greece, Portugal and North Africa were, you'd know what I mean. Then prepping the Boat for a long Crossing, and just getting in the Groove - just like Ryan did on his crossing, and there is so much to think about, there's nothing I'd like more than being Becalmed in the Doldrums for a few weeks ( it can happen, so you need to be prepared for it with a Water maker, a fishing Rod, a few months supply of Food, Cigarettes, plenty of Cold beer and a few crates of good wine, and maybe lots of Audio books to listen to , as Ive pretty much been boycotting the Disgusting Music Industry since the 1970's, as they are at least as bad as Hollywood - Holly Wood iscwhat evil F*kers make their Magic Wands from, hence their choice of name. Being Alone on a boat doesn't make you lonely either. Lonely = you aren't happy with yourself so you are bad company for you. That means you are bad company for others. wherever your boat is, it is surrounded by lots of good company, dolphins Whales, bird life, and Fish, some of which are very tasty as well. It is not so much a concern living on a boat with one other person, but rather with 3 to 5 or more other competent persons needed for crew to allow sane watch schedules, on a boat that can support them. With that number, gone are the means and trickery usually used by wives on long-term relationships, but which must be replaced with more diplomatic and mass-appeal mechanisms used by captains throughout time.

Must be hard splitting up with your partner when you have a youtube channel.
