How to Keep Valves from Freezing - Boiler Room Tip

You'd think that simply opening a valve would allow all the water to drain. Well, it does somewhat. In a typical ball valve, there is a small void area between the ball and the body of the valve that can trap some water causing a freeze concern in extreme temperatures. After draining a system like a boiler, for a dry lay-up, t's a good idea to go back and swing those valve handles to a 45° position. This allows residual trapped water to drain as well.

How come insulation application prevent freezing!? JT effect lowers temperature near zero degree. Insulation prevents from gas to exchange or absorb heat from surroundings. So doesn't it have a reverse effect!? Kindly explain how insulation jacket around throttling valve prevent icing .

@@powermechanical Not question it's real problem. I am receiving Compressed natural gas at 60 ksc which is being throttled and downstream is at 54 ksc . So this reduction in pressure is causing methane hydrate formation. As gas is not dry due to non availability of TEG AND ETHANOL. SO THIS HYDRATE AND ICING IS CAUSING WATER AND ICE FORMATION ALONG THROTTLING VALVE.

Can you guys explain whether adding insulation jacket will solve problem of not. If it can what is the reason if it doesn't then wats the reason!? PIPE SIZE 2 INCH .
