This is probably the best video for protecting your pipes if you are going to be below freezing for an extended time. The plumber said he was going to turn off the main and drain all his pipes (and fill his bathtub) for a reason - it's the one way to be sure you won't have a busted pipe. Just make sure you know the right way to do it!

She says to "turn the valve perpendicular to the pipe" at the main...and then they turn it so it's parallel to the pipe.

Yes it's always safe to shut off the water and drain the lines. That is what saved my water lines.

Wouldn't this be assuming that your faucets are lower than the pipes? Gravity pulls water down but pipes go up to the faucets.

Less water in the system means that when the small amount of water that may be left in the system has somewhere to go. It isn't that water freezes that burst the pipes it is that the water expands and when that expansion has nowhere to go in the system and then it will break out of said system.

Dont let your water district know you are turning off your water at the meter. Thats a no no. It belongs to them and only a qualified water district employee should be the one to turn it off. After you turn on your faucets (both hot and cold), leave them on. Then flush your toilets. Electric water heater, turn off breaker. Gas water heater, turn off gas valve that feeds water heater. Reason, thermal expansion will push water from tank into pipes. No water in pipes, nothing to freeze. Fyi-no likely but has happened, flush toilet to remove water. If water in toilet freezes it can break your toilet.

It’s it safe to turn off the water heater power after running the faucets empty? Or vise versa?

Shutting them off does not drain them. It just allows them to freeze and burst. Ill pass. Ran all of mine and no issues.
