This is a fantastic way to keep old photos. Preserving old photos can be a challenge and is frankly boring... But with this method you can store old photos safely and efficiently.

Can you remove them from the laminate at a future date or are they impossible to seperate from the plastic?

No, you can't remove them after this. You can cut them out but the laminate fuses to the color layer of the photo. It actually is a great way to restore old photos. It's like putting a thick glossy perfect clear-coat on top of them.

Do not seal photos right up to the edge. Once laminated the edges separate. You need at least a quarter of an inch (5mil) on all three open sides. Most laminate sheets come as glossy or matt. I found Matt better to view the images because the glossy type reflected all the light around making the images difficult to see easily. Matt absorbs light making the pictures clearer. I know all this because I scanned and laminated over 400 family pictures dating back to the late 1800's. They were deteriorating so something had to be done. Once laminated they are encased in plastic forever so you might want to consider scanning them onto your computer just in case first. You never know what will happen in the future and having digital backups of the laminated pictures avoids problems.
