Save yourself the drudgery of emptying the back deck area and pulling covers off etc and just jump the battery from the terminals under the hood according to the directions in the car manual

I tried that first, but it wouldn’t work so I had to resort to this solution, unfortunately

Hey thank you so much for posting this video!! I have a 2014 Chevy volt. And everything was fine on Friday two days later, and then no power like yours did. The dashboard had read low battery. I am going to definitely try this when I have AAA come by. But I’m just wondering is this something that I’m gonna have to start doing randomly? It wasn’t a battery issue? I wasn’t aware that you have to charge it a certain amount of times every so often…

Good luck I’m getting your Chevy vote running it’s not too hard to do but you may have to get a new battery good thank you for watching

Or you could just avoid all of that work and pop the hood and jump it from the terminals under the hood.

@@TomLeeman Going direct to the battery was the best option anyway due to current drop in the cables over distance. I'm guessing the Chevy engineers knew that, which is why they had the removable covers over the battery terminals. I'm guessing the traction battery completely died? The DC to DC converter keeps the 12 volt battery charged (or at least it's supposed to) as long as the traction battery has a charge. Ok, I just looked at the DIC once you started it and it showed 20 miles on the traction battery. I'm wondering if the 12 volt battery is failing. If it is, get a new one ASAP because the car will start throwing weird random trouble codes because of that. The car isn't showing anything about the 12 volt charging system having a fault, which is why I'm assuming it could be the battery.

@@fixman88 I think you are correct what’s crazy is I met the lead project designer for GM on the volt? He’s now the head of ai . I did have to replace the battery runs like a top

Traction battery is NOT charging 12V battery when Volt is turned off. I am surprised to hear you were unable to open the hood, it is a mechanical connection only and it works for me - way easier to jump start using battery connection points in engine compartment. Chevy Volt 12V battery will likely die after 10-12 years of use, just make sure you replace it with AGM.

You could pop the square plug off the back hatch which is fully visible in your video and insert a larger screw driver in that hole and twist to release hatch. Much simpler to service battery with hatch open.

I had to replace the battery I left the car sitting outside for about four weeks without driving in and the 12 V battery was dead but as soon as I hooked it up to the Subaru everything turned on and my lithium batteries were still charged so if the 12 V goes out you got a replace it and you can do it yourself I have video on how to do that but it’s a long process and you have to get the back hatch open check out my other videos if you need to do this explains exactly how thanks for watching
