Wow man you've covered it all. Amongst the mountains (hehe) of jumping how-to videos, this is a stand-out for sure. Thank you. Feedback from someone about 2 years into his jumping journey: watching videos is good but if you're not sessioning and putting in the time at the park and/or trails, you will never gain the confidence and skills to jump safe and fun. Pedal, jump, eat, sleep, repeat............

Great video! I would add to those beginners - stand up straight on the take off and then shift your weight back! Notice that in most of the jumps shown, the rider’s butt is shifted over the back wheel in the air. They do this by pushing the bike slightly forward with their arms, bending their knees, and shifting their weight back. When I started jumping on small jumps a few years back, I pulled the bike too hard to one side on take-off and ate a dirt sandwich - not real tasty. So I backed-off a bit and started at the very beginning by riding my bike with no hands - pedaling forward and backwards. I then started standing up on the pedals with no hands just to learn the feel of balance. From there, follow the tips in this video!

Nice man, I agree, but just make sure you aren't throwing your weight off the back of the bike as you leave the lip, because that can end up way worse, you definitely push the bike forward, just don't shift your wight back as you leave the takeoff😎👌

Working the handle bars after take off to avoid dead sailoring, I'll give that a try as it happens to me sometimes ending in huge crashes

A couple questions, are you actively pressing (preloading), the front suspension with the rear as you come into the jump? You say not to lock out your arms and legs, but in your jumps, you do seem to be locking arms and legs as your coming off the lip? Can you please explain?

Hey man! So basically, you are pre loading your body, and in turn, your suspension into the face of the take off. Imagine riding over a tabletop. If you don't preload the bike & body on the takeoff, you will just ride over it. Whereas if you preload and then bunnyhop off the lip, you will generate your upward lift. And good eye, your arms will straighten out as you leave the lip while you pull on the bar to assist the bunnyhop, but they shouldn't stay locked out once airborne. It will be hard to stay stable🙌 Let me know if this helps?

So, my teacher taught me that I had to preload my bike through the handlebars and then pull up on them. Is that the correct way to jump? Bunny hopping on a jump seems very unnatural but I don't know. I would think speed would be a major factor.

  • @a2bbiking

Both are major factors, you definitely preload but your upward trajectory comes from the bunnhyop technique, my best reccomendation is to start small, on a small jump and try to maximize your height (try jump as high as possible) and then add speed in later😊👌 Let me know if you come right my friend!

@a2bbiking thanks! Bunny hopping is definitely a tricky thing to master for sure because I can't seem to get my rear wheel up, but am definitely going to be practicing for sure!

Depending on the steepness of the lip and how much it kicks you, bunnyhopping isn't something you want to immediately start doing on a jump. If your weight is not in the right place you have too much speed and you're not experienced with steeper lips, the bunny hop technique can make you dead sailor, or worse, send you over the bars and straight to the hospital. I've seen it happen a million times.
