How To Introduce A Caged Mated Queen Into a Hive The Fast Way!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video I show you one way to introduce mated queens into a hive the fast way.
Now this is not my preferred method of introducing queens into beehives but when your caught short this is something you can do.
Please note this method of introducing mated queens into hives is not 100% guaranteed.

    I got an Essex Buckfast from BS Honeybees last Friday to add some new genes into the pool. Having had to wait for it due to delays because of the weather issues this spring I had almost forgot about it when I got a notification by email the day before it arrived. I used same method as you did but put a piece of painters tape over the end after taking the tab off, and poked a few tiny holes in it, expecting that it will delay the release of the queen beyond just the fondant. I suppose I will find out if it worked sometime this coming weekend. I am keeping fingers, and toes crossed 😄

    @@gwenyngruffydd I know it’s not perfect but I got home from work at 5-00 and there they were posted on my doormat I had the rest of the week to make my preparations so coming early I had to think on my feet, I made the mini nucs up and left them for say 16 hrs closed up and introduced the caged queens just before dinner time today just got to leave them be and check on them in a weeks time, buying these mated queens is because the month of May was such a shocker for me with no virgins getting out to be mated I’ve had a great time catching swarms in my bait hives plus call outs for swarms in peoples gardens with my own splits and a few swarms of my own I’ve been busy but only getting 2 out of say 20 virgin queens properly mated is a sickener.

    I have a new queen coming tomorrow (Jolanta) and managed to get a local beekeeper to have a look yesterday and he thinks I’ve been queenless for 2-3 weeks. The final bit of brood from my last queen is just emerging and they’ve been backfilling with nectar. Will this method work for me? It’s my first year and obviously everyday is a learning experience as a beekeeper lol! Oh and thanks for all the content.

    hi Jamie, The only way to be really sure they are queen less is to give them a test frame. ( a frame of eggs from another hive) If they draw out queen cells then their queen less if they don't make queen cells then they probably have a virgin queen in the hive waiting to mate. If there is a virgin queen in the hive they will kill your new queen. Fingers crossed the hive has no queen and they should accept the new queen no problem.

    @@gwenyngruffydd unfortunately this is my first hive so can’t give a test frame. When I went in yesterday to destroy the cells I found one contained a queen that looked near to emerging so I’m hoping they’re queenless. Also there are no eggs present at all.

    Hi, If they have been queen less for a while I would do it just like I did in this video. Queen in for 3 days Cut plastic cap off and refill sugar compartment Put her back in

    What's the reason you don't let the bees raise their own queen's? Is it down to time being a commercial keeper?

  • @gwenyngruffydd

    @gwenyngruffydd

    3 жыл бұрын

    I do let my bees make their own queens too. In this instance I was using buckfast queens. The only problem with letting the bees make their own queen is time. From the day you make the split 6 weeks can potentially go. That said you can't beat the quality of your own bred queens. (As long as we get good mating weather) We weather has been so horrendous this year spring. It was much more economical to buy some queens in for increases.

    @@gwenyngruffydd Good to know. Cheers dude.I recently followed your video and advise on stopping a swarm. So far so good. 2nd week into letting the main colony produce their own queen. The nuc that I put the old queen into with her trusted groupies seem happy too and bringing in pollen. Good times!!
