How to Intersect Masks in Lightroom
There is a tool in Lightroom that I use more than any other. It is really easy to use and means you do more in Lightroom and less in Photoshop. I love it!

I have to say, this is one of the few times a video about a “hidden tool/feature!” in Lightroom actually taught something I didn’t know that is also incredibly useful. Thanks!

Nobody else mentioned the alt for intersect. The lightroom masks are so great. So much great AI these days, Luminar Topaz DxO, are all amazing, too.

@@WanderFeetChronicles In fact I had never heard about it before. I makes it a secret for me then I guess 😆
Nigel - I have been away from photography for a few years because I had feet and leg problems too! They really limited my physical abilities for the last several years. I had surgery yesterday to repair what was essentially an aneurism of my spinal cord! Today I can feel my feet for the first time in close to 4 years. I now have hope that I can return to photography. I have followed you for years. Today I came to your channel to get familiar with some of the new Lightroom features. I had no idea you had gone through back problems!
One of the best updates they have done to Lightroom. It’s a very powerful and user friendly tool.
Wow! Something that wasn't actually clickbait! Thank you. Super useful.
This is an absolute game changer. Cheers for the detailed explanation Nigel
Your health is your wealth and hope you recover soon Nigel.
LOL Nigel, I have been requesting this feature and hadn't realized it was here. THANK YOU! On a side note, your back... My Uncle owned a landscaping company and made it big, he was the main landscaper for Disneyland back in the late 80's or 90's. He was hands on and as such destroyed his back. He's had 3 surgeries, was supposed to have just 1, the subsequent surgeries were to fix the first one. After the third, he was still in pain but decided not to do it again. They gave him pills (almost got completely hooked), the pills eased the pain but weakened his overall health making it more difficult to heal. This went on for years, but a few months after his 3rd surgery, he felt the dependence of the pills, it scared him and he stopped them but was still in enough pain he couldn't function normally. Being that we are in California he decided to give Marijuana a try. After 4 months, his back started to feel tolerable, even when he wasn't using it. I don't know the exact science behind it but there's been some research to show that Cannabis may actually help in the healing of bones. Where as pills actually hurt the healing process, weaken your mind and body. Just some food for thought. You are an incredible photographer, I strive to reach your skill level and level of success, it would be a tragedy if something like your back prevented you from moving forward in your career. Speedy recovery! Justin
Happy to see you slowly getting back on your feet, even if recovery takes time!
Came for the clickbait title, stayed for the actual value delivered 👏🏼
Nigel, i hope you read this. Every of your videos do 2 things to me: 1. they center me. 2 they light a fire in my heart to push my creativity further. Thank you for that.
Every once in a while you can stumble upon some really useful videos on Lightroom and Photoshop. This is definately one of those videos. Wow...
Glad to see you back. I hope your recovery is complete and you can get out in the field again. Good luck/
Hi just an update for the intersect locator (windows). If you hover your mouse pointer beside whichever mask you want to intersect, you will see 3 dots to the right appear, click on that and a small menu appears with the option to intersect 😊
It is very seldom that I learn something new about Lightroom, but this is definitely one of them. Epic video
Thank you for explaining these intersections! Easing the sky effect gently through the horizon line with the sea using a linear gradient is brilliant! Way better than a simple sky selection. Glad you were able to sit and make this video!
Thanks Nigel, wishing you a speedy recovery!
Hope you get well soon and stay safe in these hard times
As a LRC newbie this changed everything!
So glad the surgery went well... great to see you!
Sorry to hear about your back, brother. I've had two spinal surgeries and it ain't fun, but hang in there, it gets better with time and getting strong again.
Good day, Nigel. I can't tell you how many videos I've seen about Lightroom and intersecting, but this was - by far- the BEST I have seen. The explanation and the demos were just spot on. Fantastic video and thank you ever so much for sharing this process with us. Best of luck in your recovery fro your back surgery and looking forward to seeing you back in the field!
Great to have you back! Thank you for the tutorial, this is awesome!
Brilliant, Nigel - many thanks! Sorry to hear about your back troubles. Speedy recovery!
Great info!!! Glad to see you are back and hope you are feeling 100% very soon. No rush... will be here whenever you are ready.
Good to see you back, Nigel!
So grateful you shared this feature… my days of using ‘subtract’/‘add’ to masks are finally over! 😅
Great to see you back Nigel! Keep getting better and better. And thank you for those amazing tips. The masking tool of Lightroom is so powerful!
Another great lesson Nigel! Thank you!
Thanks so much for this Nigel. I paused your video and immediately tried this tool on a photograph that I had given up on... It worked beautifully! I hope you get well soon.
Absolutely brilliant! Thanks, always love your posts.
So valuable. Thank you. I’ve been working diligently to get this down but you clarified many points for me. It’s my second time watching and I will probably watch a third time and take notes. I hope you are healing more and more each day - Your story is inspiring and you def see the glass as half full. Take care
Absolutely brilliant explanations, on your already superb photos. You make it look so easy. Thank you, Nigel.
Great to see you're back. No pun intended. Hope you make a speedy recovery.
These LR and Photoshop videos are extremely useful. I hope that you continue to do them regularly. Thanks for making this video!
No way!!! Intersect??!! Fantastic job at sharing a secret!!!!!!!!
I’m glad you’re feeling better, Nigel! Best wishes on more recovery. Thanks for illuminating the intersect tool; I’d forgotten about how to use that.
Brilliant. Thanks Nigel. Game changed.
Wonderful lesson! Thank you!
Brilliant Nigel, thanks for the great video!!! Congrats!
Nigel - Thanks for sharing. This is truly a game changer!
Brilliant video! I have used this with sky and linear grad, but seeing you use it with the brush tool was new to me and will be a game changer! Thanks Nigel 🙂
Brilliant tip Nigel.
Thank you for these tips! I watched this video just before editing some photos I’d taken a few days previously and it was so handy in editing the photos - I noticed a real difference in the end piece. I’ve been watching quite a few of your videos recently and noticed a big difference in how I composed the image and my approach to taking a photo last time I went out to do some photography. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your channel 😊
Brilliant. Thanks for this.
Thanks once again Nigel.
Life changing tool! Thanks a lot!
Thank you!
I remeber this tool was in Capture One when I tried it out for a few months and loved it. I did not realize it was available in Lightroom now, finally a video with a tip/feature that is actually helpful!! Thank you
Excellent video bringing more knowledge to your viewers and in a very easy to follow delivery. Thank you and great to see you back in the saddle again. Best of luck on your continued recovery...be a good patient by being patient and taking it slowly!
Love that seascape at the end!
Great tip Nigel. Well done.
Just the video I've been waiting for. Thanks
thanks Nigel and wish you speedy recovery.
THANKS, Nigel This Was very helpful in seeing several great examples of how the intersect tool was used. I have struggled with the concept after viewing several other vids from others that tried to explain it without good examples of the how and why. Wish you a speedy recovery. This was excellent thanks again
Extremely useful! Thank you Nigel.
Thank you for this....can't wait to try it out!
This was SO helpful, thank you! I have just begun to understand masking and this gives me so many more options. My favorite one is the intersection of color range with a brush.
Good that you are able to be up and about Nigel. Here's hoping your recovery continues apace. Thank you for the tip - I have used intersect (usually colour) quite a lot but wasn't aware that you can intersect with another mask. That's a game changer for me in my editing, thank you.
Great Job Nigel. Glad to see you're on the mend. I've been in back hell myself, glad to see you're getting your life back.
Wonderful vid as usual. Godspeed in your recovery!
This IS acutally SO SO good Nigel! still amazed!
Great lightroom tips Nigel, glad to see you on screen again!
Excellent explanation of new tools
Incredibly useful - thanks !
Brilliant! Thanks for the info Nigel 🤯👌
I wanted to wish you a full and speedy recovery from your surgery! I also wanted to thank you for this video. Th is a remarkably transformative "hidden" use of an existing Lightroom tool. Or at least, I didn't know about it. Maybe I accidentally missed it as a new feature? In any case, the ability to "intersect" masks is an incredibly powerful refinement tool. The "select sky" mask has always been impressive for its ability to accurately select the sky (in most cases). But the practical benefits have always been limited by the (apparent) inability to soften the transition areas between sky and ground/subjects, etc. Thanks to this video, I now know how to soften or otherwise customize those transitions. Thank you again!
It really doesn't get any better than this! Cheers Nigel.
This is a game-changer! Thanks for this!!
Thank you for these tips! Really useful indeed!
Thanks !! good to know
fantastic, thank you!
Incredible. So useful and well demonstrated. Thanks!
this is wonderful! Thanks for sharing!
I’ve had so much trouble with the new masks, but I saw you use this in a video a few weeks ago, and it changed everything. I use it to combine a linear or radial with a luminance or color mask
Thanks SO much for this video! Get well soon.
Thanks!
this is a huge game changer looking forward to using this, thank you!!
I’ve watched a similar video explanation on this ‘intersect’ before, but yours is much clearer. Thanks Nigel. From a fellow back pain sufferer -3 ops - I can sympathise. Hope you have a speedy recovery with good relief.
So useful! Thank you!
AMAZING TIP😍
thanks for sharing this!
I'm floored. I can't wait to reedit my entire portfolio now.
Amazing. I will definitely use this. Thanks for this content.
Super helpful! Thank you!
Brilliant!
Awesome advice, great suggestions. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video!
Thank you! Just brilliant!!! I will have so many uses for this technique!!
Wow! Thanks for this, it's a great addition to the toolbox!
So glad to see you up and about. Prayers for a complete recover sir !! I've intersected before but not with as many different mask... can't wait to try a few more :)
Possibly the best LR tutorial video you have done Nige. These are fantastic tips and explain that 'Intersect' mode so clearly and succinctly. Sending some healing power to you from Tasmania.
When I watch the subtle elements that you take so seriously I feel like I’m learning how to taste. I thought it was beautiful without the tweaks. So much to learn to see the next level of improvement.
Well I definitely leaned something watching this. Thanks Nigel. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
blown away by your channel. great advice
Awesome Nigel I've been in need of this for a long time. Great video.
