Wellllll? Not sure if I'm incouraged or what? That was one heck of a nice video! Here's the thing... I am interested in making a couple (maybe 3 or 4) putting greens. I have room to make a nice little pitch-and-putt. Honestly, I had no idea of what is necessary And boy-oh-boy did I get a education! .... I'd say, that installation/demonstration, at first, made me think "wow, thats a lot of work but, look at that! BEAUTIFUL!" However, the reality of all that effort left me wondering if maybe I could do something less extravagant? Maybe a good short cut of my crabgrass and a good heavy roller with be good enough. And, maybe the cup installation will have to be modified and simplified just a bit... Nonetheless, you guys did a super-duper job! Thanks for showing how to do it. Chuck Wagon

I watched it three times so far, more to come for certain parts. Retired, I can work on it when bored. I will never putt on it, it would ruin my stroke. It is for the grandkids. Grass will not grow there and it looks cool. Size 12 by 15. Love the comments!

Great question. Be sure to build your base to include the shape of the dug out sand trap. Install the fringe over the hump and allow it to reach below where your sand level will be. Fill the trap as your last step and the sand will hide the edge of your turf. Avoid trying to butt the turf up to sand, it won't last. Hope this helps.

When you say 2 inch of dranlayer, is that 2 inch compacted depth? or 2 inches of drainlayer before compacting? PLEASE ANSWER, IM DOING IT NOW!! thx.

Bit more to it than I thought with all the base layers but I suppose if ya gunna do something ya might as well do it right and build it to last. Nice work. Don't think I'll be making one anytime soon though lol

I live in the Northeast US and am installing a putting green. I am wondering about using concrete around the cups. Most installations show using cement around the cup and you don't. Is that better without when you live in and area with snow and frost?

Compactor use, height of cup, and gives you the ability to ensure that is where you want the cup on the green. Placing cup before ground work doesn't ensure the slope or placement you want.

Yep - I don’t care what anyone else says it makes more sense to install the cup before throwing anything down.

Would be easier to put this on the ground that is already made out of gravel like concrete?

Just make a bigger hole and call it a swimming pool :-) In NZ we are in lockdown for 4 weeks minimum, golf course closed and no maintenance being done. Think I'll wait till it opens again as it would take me more than 4 weeks to do all this.

Could a green like this handle real shots? Balls coming from 100+ yards- or would it dent the base?

Do you NOT recommend concreting the cups in place when in a Northern environment?

Correct. The frost will lift the cup. It is important to NOT use cement. If the base happens to shift over the winter and the cups do raise, they are easy to set back into place by tapping them down with a 2x4 and a hammer. If the concrete block were to lift, it stays up. Its an option. You'd need to drill holes in the concrete for your cups. If you want contour, it can be build with carved foam and /or concrete.

Hey, great video...that taught me how much work it takes to make a professional putting green....so what am I going to do? Research which grass makes the best putting green surface, order the turf, hire a specific golf course Gardner with the right lawnmower, and buy, not rent the only tool I will need, “THE HOLE MAKER”...I can change the hole positions at will, and will make sure to coverover the holes for debris and rain...once I get bored of the course, I can change the hole positions

is it possible to put a putting green above a short tree stump ?? this video shows a flat putting green. Wondering if it's possible for undulation like a tree stump

Are you certain the stump is no longer shifting? I would recommend removing it. If it were to shift even slightly beneath your green, the entire base would be flawed.

I noticed that the fringe was spiked in place but what holds the putting surface down?

The green itself is held in place by the amount of sand weighing it down (infill) as well as the cups set into the backing. Due to the thin profile of the backing on the green, it's best to not spike it in place as the hot/cold can cause it to expand and contract the slightest bit. This is also why we recommend leaving a 1/8" gap between green and fringe. You can however set the seam tape from your fringe seams a few inches under the edge of the green and glue it if it makes you feel better. It is rare that a green gets spiked, ball roll is far too important.

Hi Bella. I will be using nylon instead of proplene, so what could I do to secure the matting of the green to my base. I wnnt be needing sand infil for nylon, so wondering what to hold it down with. Any tips for allowing for shrinkage and expansion on the green? Also any idea whast clear crush is in aUK jargon, and road base and crusher fines? Thanks so much for advice, I really wish u were near me, I'd hire you guys for sure, this is the best green ive seen to date. And its this video that will guide my DIY install. Thx.

Bella Turf I was actually going to ask what the sand is for...but now I see!!! So cool!!!

I am only interested in putting a putting green indoor. For outdoor, why don't just drive to the nearest golf course? It has much larger putting green, chipping are and bunkers. It is all free.

ground tamp it , use 4 inch "U" nails and then hire a greenkeeper to cut the holes (they have the right tool to cut an install the cups) with good planning your putting in 8 hours.

Question. Why would you need a base over your fringe? The putting green I realize so the putts roll great but the fringe doesn’t make sense why u need to go thru all that

I would say, buy the actual turf cloth and add : 2B Limestone @ $15/t 2B Roadpack Limestone @ $12/t Road Fines @ $8.50/t Compactor Rental (PA State) @ $65/day (Rent on a Saturday for the extra day) Sand's and silica's are cheap in a lot of areas, providing you buy in bulk (by the ton) I do not golf, but my Buds do. I was thinking about making a 1 hole par 5 on the property. I got about 6 acre allocated for the hole........ Maybe :P I start doing this, then I will need a pond, pavilion, 4 more fire pits, the list goes on.......

I guess this is why most putting greens are in the several thousands to install..

At 14:12 when he says that if the ground is sloped the cup should be as well means that your flag that sticks above the hole will not be straight up but hang to one side. That will not look very nice.

The green stays put due to the sand. No perimeter spiking necessary. From hot to cold, some surfaces may slightly expand and contract, this creates ripples in the green.

How did you cut your green and fringe? Did you do all free hand with a knife?

@@jayf2487 yep. I assume you have a rectangle piece of turf? Draw your ideal green shape on paper to scale or close. Transfer the shape to your putting green surface with chalk. I like to have a couple 20' lengths of 3/4" pvc pipe snapped together to bend and trace the curves smoothly. This requires extra sets of hands but is well worth the effort. Some quarries call it "rock dust." Just make sure it is aggregate and NOT sand. You want a solid compaction on the base and a smooth surface for a nice ball roll. Sand tends to shift underfoot, and road base leaves too many gaps.
