How To Install Vertical Blinds | Sliding Glass Door

I will walk you through the complete process for measuring, selecting, and installing vertical blinds for a sliding glass door. Additionally, I will review both inside and outside mounting options but will only demonstrate the install of an outside mount configuration. This is a very approachable project but it will be nice to have an extra set of hands while mounting the top rail as it can be a little hard to work with by yourself.

    I've installed many blinds in the past, but still learned some new tricks from your video. The cabinet screws you suggested work great and saved me a lot of frustration, well worth the extra $10 for a box.

    On my window I cant get the screws all the way in! It happened on both an inside and an outside mount even when I drilled a hole first. It seems like I am hitting metal or concrete. Edit: I went and bought some new screws (power pro one ext xl #8 1 1/4" as recommended by the guy at lowes-I think similar to ones in video)and it was so easy! I didn't even have to drill holes. I also got the level (good thing I did!). Now my blinds are hung and I'm very happy! Thanks for the advice.

    Good video, thanks. Probably the most important parts of this is knowing there should be wood behind the drywall at the bracket mounting height. I you have a laser, you can stripe the wall level and preinstall your brackets without going up and down with the head rail. Also, an 8 foot straightedge with a 4 foot level on top can set you a level line to avoid all the up and down with the head rail. Most sliding glass doors are less than 8 feet wide. If you cant find those installation screws, hex head installation screws are also very effective. And finally, always invest in Fat Max tape measures. Always. All professionals should be carrying them. They are the best for measuring stuff by yourself.

    I want to add that replacing the Levolor track with a new Levolor track was a direct switch-out for the actual individual vertical blinds. I was able to use the old actual individual hanging blinds, saving money. I was also wary of the new mechanism to open and close both the length of the hanging blinds, but also the closing of the blinds once they are pulled all the way across the door. The old track has little ropes you pulled to slide the blinds open and closed and a wand to twist the blinds closed for privacy. The new mechanism only uses a wand to do everything. I was concerned that would be the weak link, but 6 months later we actually like using the wand to drag the blinds right and left. It's so much easier. But we are also careful not to put weird angles of pressure on the wand which may weaken the connection point.

    When you get started with and you cut the rail to where you want it. How do you know how many pieces of the blind go up. We did this once and there was to many pieces of blinds and they over lapped on one end. Is there a way to figure this out?

    Great guidance. I am planning to install a 104" L blinds on sliding doors but realize I have an issue. I can't do in or outside mount since sliding door is 96" from floor to ceiling. I do not have that stud room for the installation of the brackets. I assume I have to do ceiling install which is kind of unique. Correct me if I am wrong but I'm thinking I would just need to screw the mounting clip to the ceiling, or should I just use the whole thing? Bracket and clip but the upper part to the ceiling. Thanks for assistance with this.

    @@EverydayHomeRepairs Scott, only other thing I could think of would be full length curtains, which would open up with a side pull, or some may still open up from both sides? They offer full privacy and light control, but not as easy to clean, nor as sleek as the vertical ones you used here. 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️🙄 I haven’t had sliding glass doors for years, so not much help to you? ✌🏻👍

    I just measured from the floor ensuring I had 1/2" clearance so the slats wouldn't drag on the floor when opening the blinds. So it is less about the molding and more about the distance from floor. Best of luck on the project.

    Helpful but please people, do not be cheap and come up short on the length of your outside mount. That gap at the end is not only aesthetically atrocious, it defeats the purpose of the blind. Especially if it was a blackout…ish.

  • @Ledfether

    @Ledfether

    When you get your blinds home, check the brackets inside the box against the ones you already have on the wall. You should be able to determine if you can use the old ones pretty easily. Most of them have a slot to adjust the blinds closer or further away form the wall/trim and a separate piece that clips on the blind's head rail that is what moves in or out making that adjustment. You may be able to use the old brackets on the wall with the new parts that clip on the head rail.

    Those bñinds do not properly fit that window. 1. The blind should completly cover the window. 2. The blind should extend beyond the window so that when you open it the full window is visible. In other words the open blind does not block part of tne window. That blind is a good 2 feet too narrow. If you are being cheap you should have installed 2 units that open to the opposite sides of the window. The right way to do it would have been to order a custom split opening rail that propely fit.
