Nice work! You should have used a ALU metal to lay your LED strip on. That will add cooling to the LED strip = longer life time

I'd have bought two of those LED kits and put the second motion sensor at the bottom of the stairs feeding both to an OR gate but to each their own. Definitely agree with putting it at the top of the stairs if you have to pick one.

Great to hear Jake and thanks for the suggestions. That would be a great idea and the led’s that I used are waterproof but I highly doubt the controller is. If I find one I’ll let you know.
I like how you recessed the LED strips on the bottom using a router. LED strips are ugly when exposed.
That’s how you earn a sub and like 👍
really cool! one thing tho, Code Requires hand rails return to to the wall so you cant hook your clothing on the ends.
@BYOTools
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the helpful tip Scott. Through my research I only saw the height requirement but the return makes sense now that you say it. Thanks for watching.
Half lapped scarf joint is the name I've heard used for that joint.
I never had any luck with the LED strip lighting backing tape holding. To counter it I purchased 3M double face the same width pretty much as the strip. Stays permanently
Considering the amount of weight/stress that could be at the halving joint, would a wood dowel[s] be worth the effort at the joint? Could the joint be positioned at one of the brackets for added security?
@BYOTools
4 жыл бұрын
Great note Stan and I was considering a dowell if I did a standard butt joint but the halving joint is crazy strong and I have no fear of failed in the future. Thanks for watching and all the support.
@bluecurlygirl

@@BYOTools Good to know. I was wondering about biscuits instead of dowels but that would be awkward I think
This hand rail is so cool. Couple of questions. How deep is the channel for the LED light strip? If you don’t have a router how would you cut out the channel for the LED light strip?
@BYOTools
4 жыл бұрын
Great to hear Asher. The channel is only about a 1/4" deep and if you don't have a router I bet you could set up a jig, clamp your raining down, and run your skill saw over the top of it a couple of times. Thats if you don't have a table saw wit ha dado blade. However, you hone have to have a channel. The LED's are so thin that I just wanted a nice clean look but I didn't have to have the channel. However, you would have to work the LED's around the brackets if you didn't make a channel. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed.
Great handrail. How about a diffuser for the leds? frosted plastic strip in the rail?
@BYOTools
4 жыл бұрын
Great to hear and nice suggestion. I thought about that ahead of time. There is a plastic film on the LED, which works as a diffuser so the LED light comes out smooth all the way across. the handrail. Light looks perfect. Thanks for the topic.
should'nt the bracket be the same color as the wall to blend in?
It would be awesome if you paired them with Led lights in the stairs
I'd call that a half lap joint.
The halved joint is differentiated from the lap joint in that the members are joined on edge, rather than on flat.
@BYOTools

Thanks for the clarification Darryl and for watching. Hope you enjoyed the video.
What about on the way back? How can i connect Motion sensor on other side of the strip?
I love the finish. When you wipe with mineral spirts is that just for prepping the wood before applying the finish?

Does the motion sensor activate when traveling in both directions or only activate from one end of the handrail?
@BYOTools
4 жыл бұрын
Just on the way down Ason. I could put and led strip on both sides of the handrail but felt that the light really only comes in handy when going down the stairs. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video.
This looks good. I am about to install LED strip lighting to an outdoor porch railing. I was going to get mains powered LED strip, hadn't thought of battery powered. How long do the batteries last in the LED strips do you know? Also, can the LED strips be cut or joined to other strips to make different lengths?
@BYOTools
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Richard and good questions. The batteries only lasted about a month at most but most likely they would last a lot longer for you since my indoor staircase most likely sees a lot more activity and movement then your outdoor railing. And yes you can cut and adjust the length if needed. Thanks again for watching and hope you subscribed.
@arthendrickson4860
3 жыл бұрын
Two items of note: 1) Does the device include an ambient light detector? 2) Batteries are always being used to power the sensor(s) albeit at lower battery consumption then when the LEDs are illuminated. The existence of an ambient light sensor should extend battery life since the LEDs won’t (shouldn’t) illuminate during the daytime.
What about a motion sensor at the bottom of the rail?
Really nice project, any reason you did not use black screws when attaching the rail to the brackets?
@BYOTools
4 жыл бұрын
Good question and good catch. The brackets came with the screws I used and I didn't want to change it based on Bold MFG provided the hardware for this project. This is something I will either paint of change in the future. Thanks for watching and glad you liked the project.

@@BYOTools I’d just color the screws with a black sharpie.
I'm going to do mine too, but I have a question? It turns on from the top because the sensor lights it up while going down the stairs but how about when you coming up the stairs? You will need 2 sensors on both ends.
@BYOTools
3 жыл бұрын
Good question Kylo and in all honesty it doesn’t bother me too much about it not turning on right away when I walk up since the sensor is pretty sensitive and it turns on once I take two steps or so. Just try to fine one that has a long batter life. This one is great but the batters don’t last for more then a month. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed.
where did you get the brackets? have a link?
How sensitive is the motion sensor given that it is recessed? How far away will it detect motion when pointing down as installed? I really like this approach and need something like this for my rear stairway.
@BYOTools
3 жыл бұрын
This one is quite sensitive but it only turns on about half way when your walking up the stairwell. That’s fine in my case since I’m mainly concerned about walking down the stairs
How did you fasten the battery box in there?
Where did you get the buffing pad?
This only works at either the top or bottom of the stairs for motion sensing?
@Davideturner
3 жыл бұрын
I suppose you could do a pair of these into the install.
How sensitive is the motion sensor?
in which side do you put the motion sensor in? up or down?
