How to install a Schlage privacy lever door handle/changing out door latch face plate rectangle to round is what this DIY howto video is about. VideoJoe is getting ready to install some new Schlage privacy lever door handles & he needs to look at the door latch face plate trim pieces. Most Schlage door handle units come with the rectangular face plates attached on the new door latches even the Schlage privacy lever door handles. Now take a look at your existing doors at the door latch area. Do they have a rectangular door latch face plate or are they round? Are all doors created equal? No. Some doors come with a mortised out are at the face plate for a rectangular style door latch face plate to fit in there but not all doors. Some doors come with a round door latch face plate. So if your new Schlage privacy lever door handle comes with the rectangular face plate on the door latch does that mean you will have to mortise out the side of the door to fit the door latch into place? Ah...in the old days yes you would have to do that & let me say that VideoJoe has done a lot of doors that way in the past, ahem. We don't live in the old days anymore though! Did you know that you can change out the new door latches from a rectangular style face plate trim piece to round easy & quickly? Yes you can. Look in the new door package for the Schlage privacy lever door handle & you will notice they give you the round door latch face plate trim pieces. Of course that means you will need to remove the rectangular door latch face trim pieces so you can then snap on the round door latch trim face plates. Presto. I'll wager you didn't even know you could do this or how easy it could be to remove the rectangular door latch face plates to then snap on the round ones. Take a look at your doors & now you can install the door latches which ever way you need. Installing a Schlage privacy lever door handle when it comes time to change out the door latch face plate from rectangular to round is easy...when you know how. Awesome! Glad to hear your handles are interchangeable like these. If your handles are a certain age then the handles can't be changed since years ago you'd have to buy them right hand or left hand but now days most if not all are interchangeable the handles. Well it turns out that my doorknobs with the faceplate will NOT come off. I had to buy a tool to help carve out the space for the faceplate.

@@egstrong So sorry to hear that. Most door handle brands now days have the same type that I show in this video to where you can take them off & swap out. Years ago they only had the rectangular style & if I ever came across a new door where the door company prepped the door with a round one I would then have to score with a drywall knife then notch out with a little chisel I had. I did that for years before they came out with the ones I show in this video. At least it didn't stop you from completing your project. Thanks for letting me know what you encountered. You mean the round collar that sometimes sticks in the side of the door where the door latch goes? Take a screw driver & pop it out using it as a chisel & it should come out. Sometimes those collars stick in there if you have a really old door lock. How do you take the old latch & ring piece out? It feels stuck

It feels stuck probably since someone has painted the door since then & you might need to convince it to come out. I have lots more door handle videos that will assist you further. You can put a screw driver through it from the door knob hole then tap it out with a hammer. Or grab the door latch portion in the door knob hole then tap out with a hammer. Sometimes the door latches come right out but if the hole is tight or if someone painted around it, it might need a bit of persuasion...! I have more videos for all kinds of things having to do with door knob removal & new door handle installs. In fact I know I have a video where I show you what I just explained but not sure what the title is since I have so many videos to choose from! Sometimes the door side latch will stick in there if it's been painted around or if the door has slightly shrunk over the years. Grab the middle of the latch in the middle of the hole where the door handle goes then tap the pliers with a hammer....see? I have another video that shows if you really want to see me do it. You'd have to go to my main KZread channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to doors then find the right video! But if you understood what I was saying then try it with the pliers & hammer. Or you could put a screw driver through the latch same type of way then wiggle back & forth a little pulling out as you go or put the screw driver in there then tap with hammer. Let me know how it goes...
