    Great viduo. Thanks for the info. One question. I had replaced the deck on my boat last year. At that time, we painted the deck, using rustoleum marine primer and topside paint, with the anti-slip additive for the final coat. By the end of the season, the paint was peeling, badly! I plan to replace with vinyl. Do I need to sand off all the old paint? I'm concerned in part because of the anti-slip additive.

  • @tomspontoons

    Thanks Marc! Unfortunately, the best way to adhere the vinyl is by gluing it to a clean wood surface. The vinyl glue needs to be able to have breathing through the wood to cure, so a sealant or paint will not allow that curing to happen properly. Do your best to sand off the paint and start with a fresh wood surface. On the bright side, sanding paint is much easier than trying to sand old carpet backing or old glue!!! Best of luck, reach out if you have more questions!

    Awesome, you'll love the vinyl! If your railings have an anodized finish then I would just hit them with dish soap and a rag to clean them up. If they're bare aluminum you could use a red scotch brite pad or they'll sort of polish up with an SOS pad or steel wool. Lots of work to polish anything and they'll oxidize/dull eventually.

    You mentioned cutting boards. FYI, since starboard is kind of expensive, then as an alternative, cutting boards also make good, cheap panels to fabricate things for pontoons. I used one an inch thick to fabricate a mount for my trolling motor, and used a couple of 1/2” thick boards to make rod racks and corner shelves with cupholders. Also used a couple others below the seat beside the battery to mount my fuse panel and 50 amp trolling motor circuit breaker on. They come in lots of colors and sizes and thicknesses. I even used a piece of scrap to fabricate a new latch for my front gate since the stock one was too weak to hold up to wind on the highway.

    @@tomspontoons it will do quite well I believe. Before I used these on my pontoon I had a little Sundolphin Sportsman pond boat and a couple of kayaks that I used these same materials on for mods. 3 years of outdoor use, and kept stored outdoors too, but not really stored in direct sunlight. There was no change to the materials. I usually always get black, but on the pontoon I’ve used both black and the royal blue color. One of the blue ones used for a corner shelf did develop a slight upward curve, but it’s barely noticable. I’m OCD about stuff like that so I catch it where others won’t. It curved very slightly along the front edge where it spans about 20” with no support. I could have stiffened it with another piece fastened like an apron board on a table and avoided the issue, but I didn’t.

    I would strongly advise against OSB or other particle board. To save some money, I would recommend using pressure treated plywood. The “treated” part is most important to resist rot and last a long time. “Marine Grade” simply means without knots or voids and typically implies that waterproof glue was used between layers of ply.

It was a unique situation where the customer had the flooring and glue and we installed it on site. • @tomspontoons

    There are a couple brands of pontoons who use a plastic material called Coosa Board, basically an HDPE material. The adhesive process is different than plywood, more similar to adhering vinyl to aluminum (video posting later this week about how to do that). My take on it is that the vinyl will wear out eventually and it’s easier to just install new plywood and vinyl at the same time than try to clean a composite deck well enough to lay new vinyl (it’s NOT fun cleaning those surfaces!)

    It’s common to have boards slightly off. Up to 1/8” shouldn’t be any problem and the rub rails (aka deck trim) will hide those inconsistencies and make the whole deck look straight and cohesive. Won’t hurt to cut them but probably not necessary

    My deck boards are pretty rough, and the toggle bolts that secure to pontoons are protruding a bit. I didn’t see how you addressed deck board seems? Will the seam tape address the protruding carriage bolt heads? Is there a product to put on deck to fill some of the irregular spots? Or simply sand smooth?

  • @tomspontoons

    @tomspontoons

    2 жыл бұрын

    I usually counter sink any deck bolt that would protrude. Even just taking a layer of plywood off with a hole cutting bit works. The seam tape only goes on the bottom of the boards where they come together. Depending on the crossmembers at the seam, it’s usually one elevator bolt (deck bolt with flat head) where the boards meet, on 12” to 16” spacing. You could sand irregular spots or add some wood filler or epoxy and sand smooth. The general rule is that you’re more likely to feel rises under the flooring than depressions!!

    Depending how it’s glued down it should come up. You could try a “spider blade” for a reciprocating saw (saws all) to help peel it up. Then you’d want to get as much of the old glue and vinyl backing (usually felt) up with a sander. If you put in the labor it’ll end up saving you a lot of money, but it’s time consuming…that’s why we just start with new wood, it would be more expensive for our customers to pay for the time just to try to salvage old plywood!

  • @tomspontoons

    @tomspontoons

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Robert! Thanks for watching our videos! I've heard a mix of reviews from different people about vinyl flooring on feet. It seems that woven vinyls are consistently cooler than other options out there. I have the gray woven teak on two boats and love it. On a really hot day we will have to splash the floor with water a time or two in order to keep it cool for the kiddos and dog, but after that it's good to go. A darker carpet can get really hot in the sun, but the big downfall of carpet is the upkeep and the fact that it simply takes forever to dry after a rain storm or wet swimmers climb aboard. I don't work on aluminum decked boats because it's such a tough thing to guarantee the new vinyl I'm installing on it. Additionally, the labor it takes to clean the surface and apply the proper adhesive makes it the same price or more compared to just stripping it and using marine grade treated plywood. You'll need to get all of the old carpet and glue off. It tends to melt and smear with sanders, wire wheels, and other abrasives. I've heard of folks using drum sanders and going through a few pads, and even renting commercial grade heated power washers. Once clean you need to use a solvent-based adhesive (aka contact cement) like Weldwood or 3M products. Because the aluminum can't breathe like wood to cure, you'll apply the solvent-based adhesive to both surfaces, allow it to nearly dry (do some test pieces on scrap aluminum), and stick together...once together that's it (if done correctly), and it won't come apart easily. You'll have to work in smaller sections usually because of the dry time, etc. so you'll likely work from front to back unrolling a few feet of vinyl as you go. Hope this helps! Someday we will do an aluminum decked boat just for the purpose of making a video on the topic.

Just take a little chunk of vinyl and glue it to the back corner of the boat, leave it for a day or two and then come check how well it cured. I think as long as it’s not epoxied or completely sealed it should cure. My fear would be how the solvent and sealant might react and mess with the vinyl.

    I need to do a video breaking down this topic. There is a BIG difference between "Marine Grade Plywood" and "Marine Grade Treated Plywood". You can get Marine Grade plywood at most lumber yards and even big box stores, but it is not treated nor meant to be constantly wet as it's not prepared for resisting rot. It's for applications where you would fiberglass over it or epoxy it to seal it. Treated Marine Grade plywood, like is sold at PontoonStuff.com is made to get wet over and over, just like what the pontoon boat manufacturers have used for the last 30-40 years. If you HAVE TO use untreated wood then yes, you should seal it....but then it requires a different adhesive and process to glue the vinyl flooring down because the vinyl doesn't breathe nor does plywood if it's sealed. If it's getting carpet then it's not a big deal. I will be making some videos coming up where I discuss common questions like this one, tritoon conversion topics, prop questions, and so much more!

    For aluminum decked boats you need to use a solvent-based adhesive when installing vinyl. Neither material breathes so the tradition glues used for wood and vinyl won’t work long-term. The process is different with solvent-based adhesive (aka contact cement) because you apply it to both materials, let it almost completely dry, then stick them together. It’s super strong stuff when done correctly! Also, and probably the worst part, is that the aluminum needs to be as spotless as possible. Gotta get ALL that old glue off the best you can……or just replace it with marine grade treated plywood!!!

    The main reason is because I'm stubborn and I know the PVC works, lol. It makes more sense to say the PVC works best because you can work the flooring outward with pressure, take all the pressure off, reset, and work outward again. That way any air bubbles, excess glue, etc. can be pushed out to the edge of the deck instead of just moving it around the deck.

    @@tomspontoons We just installed new 20' vinyl flooring using the kit from Pontoon Stuff (love it!) - your videos were so helpful! We used a 3 1/2" OD PVC pipe and instead of the cutting board, used a 9x13" nonstick cake pan... made for better pressure spread and easier on the hands. Thanks for your easy to follow videos - they're great!

    What is the best way to pull dents out of a toon?

  • @tomspontoons

    @tomspontoons

    Oh man, great question! A welder could tack some material and pull dents out. Filling with air pressure likely wouldn’t do much because the suggested pressure is only about 3 psi. I wish I had a better answer!

    What's next? After the woven vinyl is down, cured and edges trimmed ... what's next? Install fencing?

  • @tomspontoons

    You’ll need to determine if your railings integrate into the deck trim or if they’ll sit inside of it on the deck alone. If it integrates Into the deck trim you’ll need to install/position the trim first, then the railings go on. I always unbox and assemble the seat bases and seat back cushions up on the deck before adding the railings…much easier than having to lift them over! This is actually a video we are going to make coming up, a short video just talking through the steps we take when refurbishing.

    Are the staples made of something special so there's no rusting?

  • @tomspontoons

    @tomspontoons

    2 жыл бұрын

    Ideally you’d use stainless staples. However even if they rust they will not hurt anything as the deck trim will hold down the vinyl just fine. I like stapling to help with the adhesive process more than anything…making sure the edges stay glued down nice and firm.

    Stainless steel Staples do not rust. I've done this for 37 years. I do not do the floor unlike that and and just don't quite understand why you say they may rust when they don't. That's why you use stainless on boats.

    Do you treat the plywood with a water sealant?

  • @tomspontoons

    @tomspontoons

    3 ай бұрын

    When using marina grade CCA treated plywood (the plywood Pontoon Stuff sells) there is no need to seal, and in fact you don't want to seal it. HOWEVER, if you buy the "marine grade" from Menards or other local stores that is NOT TREATED then you should be sealing it because it's not meant to be used on a pontoon boat. It's meant to be fiberglassed or epoxied over. All of the boat brands using plywood have always and are continuing to use CCA Treated Marine Grade. It's the best option!

    Marine plywood sold by the vendor 3x the cost of marine plywood from other sources. Is this because this plywood is treated and other plywood is not?

    I recently bought 3/4” thick 4’x8’ marine plywood from Menards (untreated) for a test and it was only $20 less than the sheets of marine grade treated from Pontoon Stuff. We have the before and after video up for the test…I know I’d always spend the extra money and do it once the best way possible.

    Very slip resistant. I'd be confident running and jumping off of it. I'd use it on docks, patios, etc. too without fear of it getting slippery with lake water or rain.
