How To Install Fiber Cement Siding - Allura USA

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Learn how to install fiber cement siding from Tim Larson, the Product Application Specialist of Allura USA. Tim teaches you how to properly prepare and install fiber cement for homes. Want to learn more about fiber cement installation? • Fiber Cement Product R...
Today we're gonna be reviewing the general practices for installing fiber cement. When storing and handling fiber cement, it's important that you carry it on edge. And when you have it delivered, that it's on flat ground, out of the mud, and out of standing water.
So when taking delivery of the product, it's important that you try not to bend it or damage it. In the old days, and with some lumber yards, they do it off a tilt bed and that bends the product. If you can get a service that has a Moffett base skilled forklift or a boom truck, that will be the preferable way to place it.
That allows you to put a unit on each side of the house and reduces some of the back and fort that causes extra time and labor. So when cutting fiber cement, it's important that you cut outdoors, that you wear proper protective equipment. That you use shears if possible.
But if not, make sure you use a fiber cement blade to cut it. When you cut fiber cement, it's important you cut it on the back side. The way the circular saws rotate through it. The way the shears work through it. You get a cleaner cut on the backside of it.
So when I stack my material on my set up, I try to put all upside down. And that means when I'm raining dust down, it rains down on the back side and I get a cleaner cut. It also allows me to criss cross my cuts when I notch, and keeps me from having to whittle it out with a knife.
When fastening Allura fiber cement, we recommend using a corrosion resistant fastener, stainless steel being on the best. A double hot dip nail, but we will accept electrical galvanized but don't recommend it. When you use a fiber cement, you have some choices. A roofing nail, a siding nail, a coil siding nail, minimum inch and 3/4 inch flank for the most part.
It's an inch and a quarter embed into framing that can include OSB or plywood. If you're using a nonstructural substrate like gypsum, soletex, any of the products that don't have holding power, you're gonna have to be an inch and a quarter into wood with a nail. With a screw, it's only 3/4 of an inch.
So you take the minimum. Add the thickness of the non-structural and the thickness of the product and that's gonna tell you your minimum length. So there are some fasteners you don't wanna use, and that's because they don't work or we haven't tested them. Those fasteners are staples, work great for wood not for fiber cement, a d-head nail, a clip nail, and that's because we haven't tested them, aluminum nails or gluing the product on.

If you have a floating edge on a field joint that requires attention you can use a button sized blob of quadmax caulking on either side of the joint. Tape it down and remove the tape when you do the touch ups and other caulking. This guy knows his stuff. A note on windows, gap any trim as well, stick a backer rod in and caulk...or just caulk

This one is the most thorough in hitting all the points, even reiterates the important basic details not to miss. Those details are consistent with Hardie Plank siding documents. I will soon put Allura siding on my house, I know I will need to shim out some dips 1/8 to 3/8 of an inch. How much of a dip in the wall is acceptable, and still have a wall that looks straight? Do you have an opinon on house wrap? Is Tyvec worth the extra expense vs a cheaper house wrap such as Rex Wrap by Warehouser? Thank you for the good video KC

I've sided several houses with both LP and Cement, I think they're both good products but proper installation is critical to get long lasting low maintenance results, proper nails, placement and watch that set depth. Don't skimp or skip when it comes flashing, quality caulking or paint!

Hello. Thank you for the video. I know it’s almost a decade old but gave me great insight. My builder is KB and I have been fighting with them to fix some of this Allura siding. From what I has seen on this video and many others I have been watching, mine wasn’t installed correctly. Warranty is fighting with me. I’m trying to get this all fixed before my 1 year on this new build is up. It’s frustrating. I would like anyone’s help.

I'm currently on my 2nd fiber cement job and this is my personal home. The first was a Home Depot in Kitty Hawk North Carolina that was loaded with aesthetic bling, the fiber cement being one and it was over metal studs. It came unpainted. My house however, I ordered painted finish color. You did not mention painting the cut ends that I saw, is this not needed with your product. I am using James Hardie for my home. I always research even after the fact to pick up new techniques or learn something new. Good video.

Cut ends are recommended to be primed after cutting and before installation. I saw a video yesterday where the installer also primed the bottom inch or two of the backs of the planks and the bottom edge in order to ensure against water infiltration. He did this before installing the planks. I've decided to follow this technique in the ~7'x24' wall I'm applying Hardie Planking right now.

My house was completed in 2001. We put Hardie plank around the dormers. The install meChanticleer ran thr planks down against the asphalt roof over the flashing. About 16 years later we found the Hardie plank disintegrating at the bottom plank against the roofing. We cut the plank along a line 2 inches above the roof surface and installed a 1x3 strip to cover the flashing and faulted the joint. The 1x3. Was plastic. PVC ? It appears to hold. Time will tell. Our local home builders had almost no experience with Hardie plank. One other warning....at the end of construction, a home in our community was finished except some painting at the eaves. The painter left an aluminum ladder against the house for the weekend. A thunderstorm, lightening struck a nearby pine, came down the tree and jumped to the ladder, burning thru a couple of rungs and setting the house on fire. The siding was Hardie plank. The house burned to to foundation before the fire dept could arrive. Hardie plank and all. Anything will burn if the fire is hot enough. Don’t leave ladders against houses in thunderstorm months.

Nice video. I've installed both Allura and Hardie on homes in Southern Oregon and have noticed when cutting the Allura with mechanical shears, the Allura seems to have a bit less integrity (maybe it has more pulp and thus breaks apart more easily). Both products are well suited to our climate but I'm wondering about the differences in "acceptable" exposure time to rain prior to finding the time and the ideal conditions to paint it. Does anyone have experience with this? I'm about to buy siding for my new home on the coast but probably won't be able to paint it until the Spring so I'm concerned about that...

I installed allura 4x8 panels.on new build. The product seems solid and will have longevity will see. But a pain in the butt. I will NEVER use that material again. I would rather use metal or wood or any other product. The allura panels are very difficult to install dont have much integrity when you cut and you have around 5 other steps to add on when using this product (paint the cut, add flashing, add multiple screws, not a one man job, breaks when you move it, dangerous to cut you must wear lung protection). never never again I would not recommend this to anyone.

You start by NOT using this company's shoddy material. Google Allura Class Action Lawsuit. This company does not stand by it's product. Criminals.
