How To Install Extended Fork Tubes On Your Harley-Davidson Motorcycle

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is brought to you by: www.lowbrowcustoms.com & / gearedscience
Brian Radmond of Geared Science takes you on step by step tutorial to show you how easy it is to change out your old stock length fork tubes for some new longer style replacement tubes for your Harley-Davidson Motorcycle. Giving a more aggressive and chopper style stance to your motorcycle. This job can be extremely easy and with the help of Brian, some minimal tools found around the garage, a new set of Custom Cycle Engineering fork tubes and a James Gasket kit you will be rocking new legs on your chopper in minutes! He is using a 39mm set of legs to demonstrate how to do this job.
Editor Note* - These tubes do not come with PVC pipe inserts, if you need them use 5/8” PVC and cut to whatever extension your tubes are. For example if you are doing +6 over, you cut the PVC to 6 inches, +4 over you cut to 4 inches and so on.

Tip - if you don't have a vice or don't want to risk squishing your tubes, break them loose (and when your done tighten them) while they are in the triple clamps

I use an Allen wrench in the form of a socket as those L shaped ones can be an issue on old bikes when the bolt is jammed in

What do you do with the stock metal spacer? I’ve read that it should be placed under the spring then the PVC above the spring but in this video it wasn’t mentioned at all. He just drops the spring then the spacer above.

Another little important step that was left out is when you drop the upper bushing on, you need to use your PVC or slide tool to gently seat it into place. If you dont, you'll have a hard time seating your fork seal and might ruin it trying. Other than that, great video!

Right now I had to put a Sportster friend in on my 1997 Dyna and the front end sits rather low the kickstand you have to be careful the bike don't fall over it sets to upright. I'm unsure what length tubes I would need I assume that I could use the lower sections from the Sportster I believe them to be the same size in diameter. I hope I'm correct. How much would a set of stock length and what would the stock length be for a dyna 1997 set of tubes thank you

Good to see you using proper extended fork tubes instead of the extended fork tube caps. Lot of hacks out there taking that cheap short cut.

Like Forking By Frank, CCE has offered extended fork tubes for decades. Randy Smith started the company back in the late 1960s. He manufactured aluminum finned valve covers for Panheads. Personally, I wouldn't go with fork tubes which are longer than 6" over stock. Anything longer causes the forks to flex and makes the bike handle lousy (at any speed). I don't care for raked frame necks. That mod adversely effects low-speed handling. If you're into something different, stretch the frame front down tubes (moderately) and leave the steering head alone. I've been building choppers since the mid-Sixties. A shout out to Lowbrow Customs in NE Ohio. Build right. Ride safe.

Hey there, wondering if you are saying that you don't think extra rake in the forks or not. I'm currently debating this but I'm under the impression I need to alter the frame or get triple trees. Thanks in advance.

Ok I can’t find this anywhere, you clean out the fork lower by spraying the break cleaner in there but then what? Do you need to rinse it out? Blow it out with compressed air? Just let the excess drip out the bottom and don’t worry about it or what?

measure the ID (inside diameter) of your lower leg where the seal sits in that will be your OD (outside diameter) of the plastic PVC pipe. Measure your OD of your fork tube and you want to make sure the PVC pipe has enough clearance to go over the fork tube. Hope that helps.
