    Great video. Pro-tip: Instead of measuring out the spacing for the baluster connectors, make a template that fits over one and provides a whole to hold the next. So you install teh first one, then take your template with two holes in it, load a connector into the other side and fir the open hold over the installed connector. Now its holding the new connector right where you need install it.

    Hey fyi lowes sells the straight section 6ft already assembled they work great super fast just used them on a deck. The baulisters are bored into the wood. . As far as the stairs the system sucks big time .if you done get the plastic tips lined up it's almost impossible to get the baulisters in. Don't water your time. Next time I'm gonna bore a 3/4 in hole in the 2x4 for the stair rail.

    what if your railing is 45 degree ? those baluster connectors will have problem sine usually stairs have a 38 degree angle I mean standards.

    Thanks, really useful video. I managed to get 100 balusters very cheap (less than $100). However... They're square balusters (1.8cm) and there are no connectors available. Going to have to improvise on how they're secured.

    Thank you for the informative video! You truly look like you enjoy the job. I was wondering if you had any issues with the angle of the stairs, some of the connector products that are sold locally say that they are built for 40-45 degrees but my stairs are 31 degrees.

    Here in Ontario Canada, for the height off the ground that your deck appears to be, 36" rails are too short for the building code. Need to be 42" high railings minimum! Otherwise, great, helpful video! The National Building Code of Canada which applies to Ontario stipulates that the railing height of decks or balconies that are 1.80m or 5'-11" above grade must have a guardrail that is 42" high. Decks less than 1.80m, but 60cm (23-1/2") must have a guardrail that is 36" high.

    Andy, this video is EXACTLY what i needed to see. i have all the materials for this job and now feel much more ready. do you recommend using a handheld circular saw for the 2 x 4's or to use a table top mitre saw

    Awesome! That’s great to hear. I’d recommend a tabletop mitre saw if you have one, but if you don’t, a handheld circular saw will get the job done.

    You spoke of the recommended distance being 4 1/2 inches but later you measured at 3 1/2 inches. Which do you prefer?

  • @AndrewOvenden

    @AndrewOvenden

    I think he meant to say 4 1/2 both times. Code typically says that the balusters should be no more than 4” apart so placing the connectors at 4 1/2 achieves 4” between the balusters.

    Lowe's carries the Deckorator connectors which are universal. The bottom of the connector spins to become either straight or diagnal.

    using redwood 2x4 lower rail and 2x6 top rail it is necessary to cut the balusters to achieve the multi family code of 42" from nose off stair tread. Are there any issues with this?

    What should the offset be between the location of the bottom verse the top rail? If you measure directly. They’ll be angled. What’s offset do you use?

    I watched this video to assure myself this is the worst product on the market for rake rails. I had to rebuild a deck stair with this product, and I'm no novice to stair work, outside or inside. Very hard to work with. And I used k-dat material. People, use fortress products, much easier.

    Your spacing between pickets is terrible. Close to some posts, further from others. If you’re going to do “informative” videos, you should know what you’re doing.
