First time refreshing an engine, sat for 6 years not running then a year out in the rain, some water got into the engine but I didn't care too much being I didn't know much, but corroded valves and I was too lazy and unsmart to fix them, now I'm exhausting out of the heads causing way too much heat, looks like it's time to redo everything

OKAY, can you show how to install new guides on a 4.7 without removing the head? WHY? because my wife's 2000 Jeep is smoking at startup but not while running. I have been told by a local Shop that they can do it for me for a large pile of money.

thanks, this helped me alot. i had to get a new cylinder head and one of my valves were too short causing my rocker arm to keep falling off. will that cause your car to idle rough and not start. it ran smooth until the rocker on cylinder 5 fell off

+Paul Blakey Hi Paul, was your valve broken? Trying to figure out how you ended up with a short valve on the new cylinder head?

  • @2003pblakey

Thats what i was wondering. Im pulling it again today and replacing it with one of the old valves that i know works. Hopf i lly resealing the head and replacing the valve will take care of my no start problem. It ran great before the rocker fell off. Timing was spot on and fired up with a tap of the key.

+Paul Blakey Ok Man, the reason that those valves come off sometimes is because of the hydraulic lifters. Did you buy a complete new head with valves and adjusters or did you reuse your old valves and hydraulic adjusters?

+JamieJones TheCarMan i bought a new head, but i noticed one valve was shorter than the others in the new head. i checked the old one and all he valves were longer so im doing a swap right now. also going with new lifters as well.

Hey Mister Jimmy John's I followed your link to your Amazon recommendations and I didn't find the valve compressor tool that you used in this video. If I recall correctly I believe that's a Wilde design valve compressor. I found similar things on Amazon I just didn't find the exact one you used perhaps that's an aftermarket so-to-speak Fork that's attached that's actually doing the compressing on the springs?

No sir. And please excuse my auto-correct just thinks you are some sort of Sandwich King. No disrespect intended mr. Jones. I actually did finish the job, I ended up modifying a spark plug socket and the piece of bed frame in order to make a tool I can bolt to the Head apply Leverage and lower the spring in order to fit the keepers. Thank you for your videos I definitely enjoy them!

That's why you use ASSEMBLY OIL - it is sticky and keeps small parts in place .

I'm stuck doing my rebuild. The camshaft for my 4.7 heads is not turning easily while re-installing (it requires an unreasonable amount of force and makes a hard clicking sound from the springs when turning by hand. Should I install new valves? Is this a symptom of a "stuck valve?"

A little more background: I had a 2003 Dodge Dakota that seized. I swapped the engine out (thanks to KZread) with a 2000 Dodge Durango, which ran great, I just wanted the pick-up. Both were 4.7 magnums, but the Durango had a 16-tooth reluctor wheel, while the Dakota was 32-tooth. After no-spark, no-starts, I took the new-used engine back out of my Dakota. I changed it to the old 32-tooth wheel (from old engine) on the back of the crankshaft, I changed the one sprocket of the camshaft(where the sensor reads) with the old engine's since that was different also. I did something I regret during this process which was not removing the heads while turning the crankshaft about and causing the pistons to bump against the head surface. Everything else I've been following the manual to spec. I don't know if that small amount of contact could have bent a valve out of the combustion recess area, but now the camshaft is almost impossible to turn (independently off the engine block and on the block with the chain attached). It turned smoothly with little effort before. The heads may have hit the ground a few times during this re-installation. There is a lot of tension between the rocker arms and cam.
