I just put a Mcleod clutch in my 65 mustang with a 289 and a toploader 4 speed. I broke it in as they recommended and it doesnt hold a launch. I was very disappointed and will stick with Centerforce next time.

That isn't comforting to hear. I typically use LUK clutches for my small blocks and have had great luck. For this 428 though, it has the larger input shaft and this is the only option for clutches aside from getting a full out racing clutch. So I'm at the mercy of Mcleod, hopefully she holds up!

I would love a video on the difference between 157 tooth vs. 164 tooth Bellhousings and flywheels. And starter applications for each. I slapped in a new 157 tooth flywheel and 10.5” clutch on a 164 tooth bellhousing (C5AA-6394-B). 1965 289 motor. The original flywheel was 164 tooth (C5AE-6380-E). Now I can’t find a starter to with my set up. Both manual and auto starters just spin. I’m sure I’m not the first or last.

Not sure if you used arp bolts or not on the pressure plate but my arp kit shows 25 lbs for 5/16 and 45 lbs for 3/8

Well this is on a Galaxie so it doesn't have a clutch pedal spring. But here is a video for a 67 mustang. I hope that helps. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kWyWlZmffNKvfps.html

The worst sensation ever trusting a high torque spec and feeling that bolt give made that mistake on a Harley Davidson evolution rocker box bolt.

Yup! Our first attempt was actually using the original bolts on this. Never made it to 20 before the first one broke off. Had to put it on pause and order new bolts. Lesson learned, just get all new bolts.

Thanks for posting, this will help me on my FE powered truck. Do you recall the length of the 5/16 pressure plate bolts? Are they fine thread? Do flywheel bolts need replacement too?

  • @AlfsMustangGarage

I don't recall the length and thread. I just ordered the specific bolts from NPD. And it never hurts to get new flywheel bolts too.

  • @zavney

Why did you not wipe the dirty hand prints off the flywheel. Usually some brake cleaner on a clean rags takes them off.
