Thank you SO much for posting this. I am a stay-home mom this year. I decided to use the time to finish our basement. I studied your video over and over again and followed it to the T. The basement is now trimmed and looks great!
Thanks for taking the time to show and tell miter basics. Nice clear video, no hand/body blocking, voice was articulate and didn't break my eardrums. Thank You
Hi Jose! What I do is add a little adhesive like "no nails" to the back of the trim then I use a standard air brad nailer and 1-1/2" 18 gauge nails. The trick is holding the trim tight to the wall and firing the nails at a slight angle (maybe about 30 degrees). Be sure that you are nailing above the metal track and away from any studs. Good question!
FYI. I pulled my baseboard to replace our tile floor. I noticed small pieces of 1/2 mdf in the space between the concrete floor and the drywall. They were at the spots where it was nailed to prevent the baseboard from pulling under into the gap. Nice video. It should help a lot when I put back the new baseboard. Thanks.
Been watching videos of making the inner and outer corners, but you showed how to measure the boards and mark them. That has helped me. Thank you.
Good stuff, man. Love your channel. I started at the top, painted the walls and the ceilings in my house, did crown moulding in most of it, redid the window trim and now I'm down to the floors where I tore up carpet and tearing up linoleum in the kitchen and dining and hallway. Moved on to door trim and baseboards. It's rewarding doing it yourself. Takes a bit of patience but the fine detail is what makes the job.

That is awesome!
35 years ago I learned from a veteran carpenter of 45 years to cope inside corners whether they be crown or baseboard paint or stain. That is still my preferred method however they do have more complicated tools out to more accurately cut out of square inside and outside corners. I usually cut the 45 deg. Cope and then cut back around 15 degrees or use a belt sander where I can. I had to practice for 2 months as a beginner until I learned it. Once you do it enough it really isn't that difficult or overly time consuming to get that professional looking joint. Cut the long wall square on the ends and cope the short wall and if you have a 1 inch belt sander try that for excess cope material removal up to the cope line. I know some guys use them for the whole coping stock removal and they are very good and fast at it.

Wow thank you for explaining that.🙌
I'm the amateur you guys allude to..this was my first and last DIY job This video was terrific and I installed about 400 feet of MDF...it looks first rate. Shannon you put together a first rate video...slow enough to grasp what you're saying, and addressed the nuances a viewer is thinking about. Thanks!
Thanks Sean for helping me out. I had so much trouble translating the actual measurements in my head to the actual cutting. I figured there must be a tip to get accurate results and you nailed it . Your approach is organic natural and inspiring for me a DIYer.. Keep up the good work. Thank you

Thanks for the tip about the protractor. I was watching all sorts of videos about how to do baseboard trim then they would tell you to do some very intricate cutting and measuring and then your protractor tip popped up. Perfect! Thank you
Mdf trim like I was using here cuts fairly easy. I was using a 80 Tooth blade but a 50 -60 would work as well.
Thanks Shannon. As usual, your video clips are the best. You are mentioning the details which is very important to know for naive people like me. Thanks!
Thank you for showing us how we can do it ourselves. Your video is clear and your demonstrations are easy to follow!
THANKS. Im installing my own baseboards. I had an idea how to install them...your video insured me that how i was doing them was 100 % correct...DIY is the best way to go, I always get that accomplished feeling when im done..
Your videos are so helpful and easy to follow. You taught me how to tape and mud my drywall, now we're going to tackle the baseboards. Thank you!
Thanks for another great video! You're excellent at presenting these things in a clear, natural way.
A good clear video, has really helped me out - thanks so much. Going to now look at your other videos for the rest of our house renovation jobs
Had to smile when I saw this one. I'm getting ready to start a laminate floor installation and instantly recognized you as the guy who saved me $100+ when my flame sensor failed on my furnace!
Beginner here! This was a super informative video! Exactly what I needed for the trim I'm working on now.
This guy is great and just my speed as a woman who just learned how to use a drill. Can’t wait to get started on improving my house thanks to your videos!!!
My first time attempting to install some baseboard. Great video, very helpful. You make it look easy. I’m glad I came across it.
Shannon, awesome job! I'm learning the trade at 48. Helps me unwind from my day job. Thank You and many Blessings too you and HouseImprovments.

12:43 - to avoid your mitre joint from opening its best to cope the baseboard using a coping saw. That way you have a nice tight joint and don’t have to use caulk, which imho looks like crap. Otherwise I’ve always enjoyed watching your videos and learning new tips and tricks. Great work 👍

Yeah I've never seen anyone else cut the inside corners 45 degrees. Ask others I've seen use the coping saw method and it looks great.
Excellent! Thank you, so direct and great camera angles to really see what the process is.
simple, straightforward , no silly background music...very helpfull thanks from the uk !! mike..
I learned one new trick from this video. Shoot the nail in an angle to keep the top part of the trim from jumping out when there is no stud there. I liked that. Everything else I already knew.. I like to use a quarter round at the base of my baseboards to hide the uneven floors. It's flexible and can be pushed flat with the floor.
Got a mitre saw for my birthday with the goal of putting on trim for my first time - a bit of of my comfort zone to say the least 😂 this video I think will help me

Thanks for caring about us and our safety! Your video was amazing, and very informational.
Thanks for the great video! I like that you address any problems you may have along the way.
I'm not a 'finisher carpenter' as it's known in the U.S or Canada, but in Australia I like to use a a piece of of fence picket or something smooth and flexi and use it on the top of the skirting (baseboard ) to push it hard down onto the flooring..then fix it off. It can help to create a nice and smooth skirting. But nice vid mate.
A very thorough walk-through and a great presentation sir. Appreciate it and please keep them coming! Just subscribed.
Thanks for the video! Since you mentioned caulking trim, I wanted to pass along a tip someone gave me. Anytime you caulk small seams or gaps where your fingers are too big to exert pressure, consider using a damp sponge instead of a damp rag. The sponge is springy enough that it will push itself into little gaps and seams, and its simpler to clean if you have much caulking to do. Constantly bunching up a rag and trying to find clean spots on it gets old fast.

You are great at explaining things! Thanks for your help on how to install baseboards!
Thanks for sharing how to do this with all of us DIYers!
Shannon's videos are the best. I will try Jacks method of inside corners at 44 and outside at 46. Seems like mine are always a bit off and hopefully that will help.
Great video, straight forward, easy to understand & best of all done by a fellow Canadian!...would love to try doing my own baseboards but am petrified of using power saws. That's the only thing holding me back from this DIY project.
Omg thank-you! It never occured to me to use the chop saw with the baseboard standing up! This just made it so much easier!!
Nice vid, will be doing my own baseboard installs and this video confirmed I was on the right track.
Thank you. A lot of good tips. I never knew to relieve the pressure in my caulk gun, this alone is a great tip that you should mention.
Honestly, your videos are so thorough! Thanks so much!
Thank you!! I realize this is 10 years old and you may not see this comment, however, I have been through DOZENS of videos and NONE of them showed the detail you have in measuring, which is exactly what I was looking for. So again I say THANK YOU!!

Great video, no cheesy music, now I'm confident to tackle my baseboards.
Just learned alot in a matter of minutes. Subscribed thx
This made me feel better about my imperfect corners. Cheers.
7:10 Not sure about that cross-armed hold, I'm a rightie too but would either reverse my hands on that cut or easily extend the left fence on that Bosch and hold on the left side of blade. But I see you still have both hands and arms so whatever works.
Thank you so much....for a newbie DIY....this really helped me re-do the trim in a walk-in closet.
Adhesive on the back and a few brad nails shot in at an angle through the drywall. The angled nails will generally hold things in place until the adhesive sets up.
I cant remember the exact make of that stud finder but you should be able to find stud finders at any hardware store.

Thanks so much for what I think is by far the best video on this topic on KZread. My Saturday is going to be spent installing baseboards and I have a much better idea how to go about it now.
Thanks for the video. I ran audio wires under my Sheetrock and need to put the baseboards back on. It appears they glued or caulked the top of baseboards to wall and wanted to know best practice. Since we just had our foundation leveled (Texas problem) we are having the carpet installers in next week so I wanted to run wire before carpet and painter. Thanks again.
Your channel rocks bro... you made the boards a snap! God Bless!
I see all the "professionals" out there are putting this vid down for not coping inside corners but no one has commented on how long coping takes compared to a mitered cut. Having done many years of work for the Big Box stores teaches you time is money and it's not always possible to give up so much extra time for a perfect job, especially now that the Big Box stores subs out all their jobs to Prime Contractors and most of time they in turn sub it out cheaply to other contractors or employees who get paid hourly and with a bonus if they can get the work done quickly. What i do on paint grade baseboards, is miter the inside corners at 44 degrees and outside corners at 46 degrees. Since most corners are not perfectly square this method compensates for this by allowing the most visible edges to come together first and look better. Then before i put the inside corners together i used a water clean up white caulking on one of the corners so when it's pressed together and nailed the caulking squirts out a little and is simply wiped clean with a clean, damp rag. Most corners don't even need touch up paint Outside corners are usually tight with the 46 degree method. If you are working for an engineer be careful...they can be very anal so take this into consideration if you are bidding a job. Ask the customer if they want the inside corners all mitered and bid according for the extra time it's going to take you to satisfied their anal demands. Stain grade baseboards should be coped for best results. This is based on 43 years of experience.

Jack Ellenberger coping only takes an extra 20 seconds per piece. You can cut and cope that whole room in 10 min. You could nail the whole room in about the same amount of time and not have to use any caulk. I've seen big box store work and I would never hire them to do any trim in my house. I've been trimming for 18 years and learned the first day you dont miter inside corners. Time is money but theres no money if theres no quality.
@RangerCaptain11A

stfsgtweb99 do you glue all your joints? i know carpenters that use biscuits to improve the miters. do you use a scribe and trim the bottom edge to fit the floor contours? do you shim the bottom of the wall to make up for the drywall being thinner at the edges? do you caulk the bottom in wet locations? there's no money if there's no quality.
@captain757747

Exactly. This is what the home improvement stores contract out to. Coping does not take that long but coming back to repair sloppy corners takes a lot longer. Also I use a digital out side corner angle finder and never assume the corner is going to be 90 degrees. And this bozo putting a stud finder on a 18 inch wall? Duh there is always a stud beside an electrical outlet. and next to door casing. I have never found a stud in the middle of an 18 or 24 inch wall. Instead of making videos he needs to be watching some!!!

Thanks Shannon!! Great video. I learned a lot. With the floor plan and doing the sketch.
I knew you were Canadian the moment you said, "Out"! Very good video, and much appreciated!! I have to install some molding over a wood floor in my RV. This will be pine wood molding quarter round 1/2" x 1/2". Problem is that though the subfloor is plywood, the walls are only 1/8" thick in places. Should I use Titebond Wood Glue on entire surface of molding plus some brad nails with nail gun, or just glue corners? Will the air compressor split the thin molding? Now to figure out what 'coping' means! Thanks again!!
@HouseImprovements

could you actually nail it to the floor instead of the thin wall? If not then a few short brads and the odd bead of adhesive should do it

I always put plinthe blocks (approx 3/4” thick) at the bottom of door frames. They give the overall molding job a much better look.

Thank you for the video, definitely informative. Going to the website now and bookmarking it! :)
Great video, as always! Thanks!
I would tend to use a small 1/4 round trim . you install your normal baseboard then install the 1/4 round by pushing it tight to the flooring and nailing it into the baseboard. When you silicone it makes it tough to remove when you change the flooring and silicone also attracts dust and dirt over time so it appears dirty all the time.
Great video, very detailed, helped me do my job

Thanks for the video... I am about to put in ~ 550 sq ft of new solid wood floors and I will be replacing all the baseboard.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills Shannon. Easy to understand video.
Shannon always got the good videos
I'm not gonna pretend I'm a professional, but this method seems the most fool proof way to install baseboards. I looked up a couple vids on coping and that seems more technical. I'm sure there are endless amount of people that can properly do coping in a few minutes, but that's not everybody. It takes finesse and skill (which is why it looks better) but personally, I could do this (since the saw does the cut), I don't know if I could do coping proper. This job (with caulking) looks fine to me. Once you get furniture and things in the room, it would look even better.

Coping has its place, for instance with wood trims that are colour stained you obviously can not use caulking . Thanks for your comments.

if you are painting the caulking with any wall colour you can. If you use a nice neat caulking bead you can just paint the caulk with trim colour.
