The Yamaha FZ-09, FJ-09, MT-09 and XSR900 seems to be plagued by a faulty cam chain tensioner. I first noticed loud "ticking" sounds within the first year coming from the left side of my engine. I bought the APE Pro Series Manual Cam Chain Tensioner after reading up on the issue online and it seemed like the best option.
I brought the bike to my local dealer to have them install and they were uncomfortable doing the install. They advised I replace the tensioner with the new updated part from Yamaha. It would also be free. Unfortunately, only a few months back into the riding season I started to experience the same symptoms.
With Tom's help, we cracked open my engine for the first time and installed the APE Manual Cam Chain Tensioner.
Disclaimer: I am not the most technical, or informed motorcycle mechanic. I did research on the install utilizing the sources below and tried my best.
The purpose of this video is to provide an honest representation if the install by an average guy and help you avoid some of the silly problems we encountered.

This video was funny but actually super helpful. I'm having the same issue and feel a lot more confident tackling this myself now.

I was convinced your engine was going to eat itself when you started it. No loud metallic bang, happy days.

You guys did great! Im an automatic technician and I'm disappointed to hear that the mechanic you went to turned you away but at the same time I'm happy because you got this experience your self and help other people out too! Video was very funny, one thing I'd say is a good idea after doing the installation before reinstalling the covers rotate the engine 4 revolutions counter clock wise from the bolt on the left side of the motorcycle as that is the way the engine spins to insure proper timing and and also at that point you can reexamine the tension of the chain because you will have made it tight by rotating it. You don't want to rotate it clockwise as that will in tension the chain and may potentially jump time. Anyways good job altho it didn't have any chain slap on start up I'd be a bit concerned you overtightened it based on how it sounded then again the adio is a bit distorted I suppose

You/We can make our stock cam chain tensioner a manual one just by drilling the cam chain tension and tapping it and install a bolt to put tension on the pusher so it can go backwards or forward unless you do it with the installed tensioner bolt...
