How to Install and Upgrade a Diesel Heater | Idiot’s Guide | DIY Sprinter Van Conversion UK

UPDATE: Since publishing this video, I realised that I had installed the fuel filter the wrong way round. Fuel should enter the filter into the larger chamber and exit through the end wrapped in mesh.
Like the majority of people converting a van, I opted to buy a much cheaper Chinese diesel heater to heat my van. Electric heaters use up far too much power, LPG heaters were way too expensive and all the research I’ve done indicates that these cheaper diesel heaters are just as good as their expensive counterparts.
I know I’m only adding to the immense amount of installation videos on KZread at the moment, but I’ve noticed that everyone’s setups are slightly different so hopefully this helps anyone looking to install one in a similar way.
Due to there previously being an old diesel heater in my van that was connected to my van’s fuel tank, this meant I could run my fuel pump and filter along the bottom of my van and connect it to the existing fuel line, meaning that I didn’t have to completely remove my fuel tank.

Great explanation, the reason most folks cut a larger hole is to allow for heat from the exhaust to not burn the van down. You mentioned you had foam in the floor as well and the plywood is also combustible.

A cheap hand primer bellows installed in-line pushes the fuel through until you can see it about to enter the heater ? Each pump-click happens with no lubrication for the internal mechanism until fuel enters it. In perspective it takes 250 clicks to deliver 5ml ( a teaspoonful) of diesel ( or paraffin). Not ideal for reliability, and very slow priming time. The Chinese instructions are gleaned from the genuine Webasto and Eberspacher heaters documentation and not reproduced very clear ! Too much fuel will also create white smoke until operating temperature is achieved ... (poor combustion) Keep the glowplug and little atomiser tube clean every 10 hours or so of use and it should run forever ! Unless the pump fails. Be careful of maintaining ALL gasket seals so you dont introduce carbon monoxide. Fit a C.O alarm to be safe .

Hey Mate, First of all, please forgive my terrible English as I am French, I know, nobody's perfect 😁 That said, thanks very much for sharing your journey with us... I have only seen a couple of your videos yet but I really liked them 👍 I have a "comment" regarding your diesel filter, it seems to be set in the wrong direction and could lead to a inner part failure... You could look at this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/i6JhqaOCqsjSc7g.html at 5:30 to understand what I mean. Anyway, keep the good work 😉

You're so welcome... With all the work you've put on to be very helpful to others by taking the time to be very descriptive, I thank you, I will surely gain time converting my van once I get one 😂 It's just a matter to find the good opportunity for the budget but it's coming 😉 BTW, you're French is quite good, I'm wondering if I should just go on in French now 👍. Well, while i got the opportunity, I got a question about another video tho... What did you use to make your insulation foam panels "stick" to the top & sides? Anyway, merci beaucoup et bonne chance pour la suite 😁

@@markustitus8521 Thanks man! I'm planning on spending some time in France once the van's finished so I can practice my French. So with the insulation, for the smaller sections in the walls, the insulation fitted nicely within the frame of the van, then packing the gaps with the plastic bottle wool helped keep it in place. For the larger sections and the ceiling, I just used some of the aluminium foil tape to keep the insulation in place. Merci encore mec!
