Recently rebuilt the forks and rear shock on my 99' Yz125 and it was a lot easier than I imagined. Very intimidating for me but was not bad!

@@seriouscheddar7373 if they are leaking, try just cleaning the seals first with a seal cleaner or a cut credit card. Worth a shot 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good video! The floating wheel trick was something new I learned

Lower triple tree is a hair looser than the top in case you go down hard. That triple tree will move & get out of alignment slightly before you bend a fork - much the same way Kyle recommends not over-tightening your levers (in case you go down they’ll move a little instead of breaking off). Trust me on this. I high-sided about a year ago and thought I bent a fork. My bike was visibly CROOKED. Loosened the bottom triple tree fork clamps and the top nut just under the handle bars. Bugger went right back to straight. There’s a lot of great info on this channel. I don’t sub anymore bc not eligible for drawings in FL. Thanks, Kyle!

You still have to make sure the wheel and handlebars are lined up right, so the forks aren't twisted, i.e. top and bottom triple clamps are lined up in same plane. Maybe the KTM is different, but most bikes will need this done.

If you have an off and twist your forks in the clamps, what your procedure for that?

Great tips here. Does that torque wrench have the ability to provide "click" feedback when value is reached? I've used purely audible torque wrenches in the past and didn't care for them.

Great tips, but if you tighten your front axle when it's not moving freely, and you then loose those clamps, wouldn't that change the torque of the axle, and can even leave it loose?

If one fork is .5mm higher than the other could that cause the brake to drag? Cheers

I have a DRZ400SM and when I do this I usually get a larger "free play" on the front axle. Suzuki manual says that I need to torque the axle nut to 20Nm, then tighten all the pinch bolts, and after that tighten the axle nut to 42Nm. This kind of ensures that there is no slack in on the front axle (speedo drive from one side of the wheel and spacer on the other are all kept "tightly" together without excess movement/free play. If at any point I loosen right side pinch bolts to try and straighten fork alignment I get a situation where I have a few millimeters of extra "free play/gap" on my front axle (the speedo drive and spacer on the other side of the wheel are no held together "tightly" anymore. Can you comment on this? Is this still fine and I still should proceed in the manner demonstrated in this video?

Was told by a local AA rider mechanic to grease all bolts that require torqueing, but don't require Loctite (e.g., pinch bolts on the triple clamps, down on the axle etc.). A "dry" bolt will give you a false torque reading and most likely resulting in overtightening, which is not good, especially on the fork tubes. Just some grease (e.g., axle, waterproof etc. will do) on the first 1/4" of the end of the thread.

Sometimes a wet bolt can give you a false torque as well too... fluid can cause hydro pressure

Too loose they can slip up and ram your handlebars, or too tight they pinch and cause friction etc... I would just torque them perfectly. 🤘🏼🤘🏼

You should do a review on the Honda CRF 450rx or the WR 450f.

Great video. A few points: 1 - I believe you should leave the pinch bolts on both sides free as both sides float. (Ie, don't tighten the brake side pinch bolts until after you've loaded/unloaded the suspension) 2 - I normally remove the bike from the stand, grab the front brake and bounce the front suspension several times to get everything aligned correctly This lines up with the procedure in the Yamaha WR450 factory service manual.

I have no idea why the manufactures do not use spacers on the axle for up-side down forks like they did with the traditional forks. The traditional forks had to be parallel too.

Thanks for the vid! I set my forks at the same height but the axle does NOT go through smoothly? I then aligned my forks so that the axle goes through smoothly but the fork heights are about 1mm off from each other? What's more important? Fork height the same or axle smoothness?

The height of the fork i would say its independent. I have it as high as possebal all the way to the cap. Iam 192 cm and it feels better. Its fast to experement with it on the track i mean its only 1 min job.

i'm a newbie for dirts so if i ask some silly questions, so sorry for that. For my riding style, i need to raise the front end about 50mm so i need a longer pair of forks. Any suggestions (for model of forks)? I don't want to change the front wheel. Thank you

The balance between the front and rear suspension is pretty good from the factory on any good dirt bike. The balance effects how stable the bike is in a straight line, and how well it like to turn a corner. Just sliding your fork tubes up or down in the triple clamps 5mm will make a difference most raiders can feel for corning or straight line stability. If you raised your front end 2" (50mm), it might be very stable,---but any other dirt bike will be able to track in a corner much better. It would be like trying to turn a chopper. It sounds like you need a taller bike, (both end higher), and I have found, (getting back into riding after 20 years off), that bikes that are too tall,---are the only ones made today. I lowered my suspension (internally) on my 2019 YZ250 6.35% on each end, (.75" in the front and a bit more in the rear), so I can keep a good balance.

Affects the speed of the steering and handling, in sand slide forks down to flush to make it more stable and less twitchy.

To get the forks parallel with each other, the front brake trick does not work. I know this because after a few rides, I changed my fluid and found metallic pieces in the oil. So I measured the cent to cent distance of my triple clamp, and calculated the correct distance between the fork tubes. For my 2019 YZ 250 2-stroke, it is 5.661". I then cut a 1" diameter piece of aluminum bar stock to 5.661" long on my lathe, (facing off both ends to overall length), so I can use it between the wheel end of the forks, (the 1" round stock fits through my brake disk). The spinning wheel brake method left it wide. To be quite frank though, I have no idea why the manufactures did not use spacers of the correct thickness on the axle, like the normal forks had. They had to be parallel too.

If you can't make that tool, another method that makes sense to me is remove the top caps so you can compress the forks to bottom, and strap the wheel so it will stay bottomed with the wheel off the ground with the clamp loose. Wiggle the wheel a bit so the forks find the best cent to cent distance, and tighten the clamps. The idea is that with as much overlap as possible with the forks compressed all the way, it will find the good spacing, that is not hard on the bushings, by itself.

When in the sequence did you re-gorge the steering stem nut?

@@aaronmcelhinney1436 I'd check your service manual for the proper procedure and torque specs because it will vary from bike to bike. For example, when re-installing the castle nut for the Yamaha's lower triple clamp you need to tighten to 27lb-ft, then back off fully and re-tighten to 5lb-ft. Steering stem nut on the top clamp will have a specified torque as well.

I made my own tool from a piece of 1" diameter aluminum round stock, (to fit between the fork legs through a hole in the brake disk), and found this method to be off almost .030" on my bike. It is necessary to use a tool.

Why would you not just use the calipers to measure out 5mm?...Choosing to eyeball 3-1/2 pennies kind of defeats the purpose of owning that tool.

You missed some EXTREMELY CRUTIAL steps....don't believe everything you see on the internet folks. Many of these "mekaniks" are out here doing repairs 55x over LOl

That’s actually called a double clamp because a triple clamp has three bolts that one only has two and two is double so it’s a double clamp. If you don’t believe me look it up.
