I gave up on installing the IKEA KVARTAL about five years ago. I came across them still in the box in a closet near the window I wanted to cover. I thought I would try again, only to realize I was missing parts. I didn't know at the store that I needed brackets or a multi-track. Thanks for the in-depth instructions, tips, and tricks. I hope to finally put the panels to use.

Soooo glad I could find a video on the kvartal curtain panels (not regulat curtains). Cuz I am exchanging my panels and I am trying to figure out how to properly hang the panels. This was super helpful. If anyone has a turorial they could tag me on that slows/zooms that part down/in, I would greatly appreciate it. Have a great day.

This product takes a long time to assemble and make it work. I guess that is why it's so cheap.

This is truly a DIY system but at least it’s cheap.

+Ralph Hernandez If you cut both the rails equally, you can then put the support bracket in the middle. If you cut them unequally and put the support in the middle, then it wont be as structurally strong.

I am re-installing my 3-slider panels in my new home and this was a wonderful reminder of how to do it. I really like that you show the 'mistakes' or issues you've encountered and what to watch out for. I like that you sometimes described things as "things" but it was totally clear what you were talking about, it was actually endearing :)

Hi, I just watched your video. You did a great job explaining everything clearly and you went into great detail. Loved your voice! I really liked the close up shots you did. That really helped. I agree with the guy who said it would have been really helpful if you had continued with step by step instructions of the rails and slowed down how you put on the things on the curtain panels. All compliments!! Make more vidoes!!

Just purchased the single rail system with the little 1" ceiling extender holding piece. Not sure how to install yet, was hoping your video would show it, but your system is a bit different. Liked all the info though, and things to watch out for. LOVE your idea about the scanned receipt/instruction kiosk! GENIUS!!!!

If you use the ceiling holder, I think you have to make sure to use some dry wall anchors if the ceiling is dry wall. Thanks for watching! =D

It takes a lot of time to get it tuned right. I see why it's about 1/3 the cost or ready made ones.

Kim Carlisle - thanks! i agree I probably missed a few bits where I can cover each step in more detail. I'll have to incorporate these in my future work. There's this whole business I did with readjusting the top and bottom rail a week later to make sure everything is PERFECTLY straight. Now I'll have to stop by Ikea and buy some new furniture just so I can make another video, lol.

Great video. I have the triple rail version. We've had it for a few years and some of my little roller things (in your video around 2:50) are lost or broken. Does anyone know or a replacement? I don't want to have to buy a whole new set of rails just for the little roller.

Thanks for the honest information about the downside of this system. It may work for some but thanks to you, we are not installing these panels which we were just about to purchase.

OMG, your instruction idea is genius!

+JOEY EMANUEL The wavy edge fabric sounds pretty hopeless to me. I know what you mean, the edges gets stretched out over time while the middle is fine creating a non-uniform wavy panel. After painting, I guess you can no longer wash them. Last ditch effort would be to iron them on very low heat like you said. OR you could try stretching the middle out also. Roll it up with slight force, too much may just tear it. You could also make 1mm V cuts maybe 3-6 inches in and patch them back up with iron on fabric patches. They will look funny with the patch but you could do it to ALL of them in a pattern to make it look like that is the style. Not sure about your budget but each panel goes for $5-10 so its not too bad to just get new ones also.

+Ralph Hernandez Thanks! If and when the plastic rollers snap, you can just buy a new set of top/bottom rail hardware ($5.99 right now) and just replace it. Slide the broken one out and put the new one in.

Excellent instructions and commentary. I wanted to use this for a triple curtain system but it doesn't seem strong enough to hang brocade drapes. I wish I had such clear instructions when installing the Algot system.

Thanks for your video-its kind of daunting with only the pictograph instructions. I never figured out what all the extra hardware was for...A Hack saw works just as well(its only aluminum) if you dont have the Chop Saw shown.

Dani Jackson You need two triple rails in parallel running the length of the 6 panels. Each triple is 55" long.

Great video! We love the one that came with the house we rent. However, we need to change the fabric panels. Any clue how to open them up to remove the originals? We took a panel down, but can't figure it out. Thanks in advance!

They are just held down with hex screws. You don't seem them?

The original homeowner installed these panels . I have to reinstall a panel since someone stepped on it ( handyman) . I do not have any of the original pieces. I wanted to ask what size allen wrench is used? I need to pick one up from hardware store. I had to have discontinued parts ..3D printed and mailed to me. Your video was very helpful! Shane MacKenzie Absolutely. With the wider hanging bracket, you can use one triple rail and then two single rail. If you do 6, you can put two triple rails. When you put multiple rails together, you need to make sure they are close enough together so when you pull the curtains, the connecting hooks will engage. When I did it, spacing them by the end pieces was too wide, they need to be closer than that.

Great instructional video and I wish I had watched it BEFORE buying all the stuff at IKEA.... I think I may still need to get a few of the pieces that I didn't notice while studying the booklet at the store. You really should contract with Ikea to show how to do installation prior to buying the products! But then maybe people would say, "uh, maybe it's too much effort" and not buy it, Lol! I'm really considering bringing it all back because it looks like it doesn't slide very smoothly. But I'm wondering, do you still like it? Or was it worth all the effort?

I can't figure out how to put the grey plastic bits in so the panels catch and all open or close as one, right now I have to do each one individually. I thought the same about the allen key. And the idea about the manuals is a good one. I had to use 6 panels so you can imagine how many keys I had at the end.

+Jacky Parris 6 panels that open from the middle? First to figure out is if you want the last panel to be on the front or back of the stack when everything is closed. Then you try to fit the brackets on so they are in the locked position. There are only two types and you need one of each at the junctions. Thanks for your video - very interesting and informative video. I'd like to replace 2 bi-fold doors with 4 21-inch wide panels that will slide to the right. But instead of fabric panels I'd like to use something thin but more substantial - maybe aluminum sheeting, mdf board - something that I can add a decorative element to, to make a focal point on the wall when closed. Do you think the IKEA rail system would work for that kind of application? I don't want the 4 rails to be too deep - just a couple of inches like yours.

+Sam Holzmann This is Ikea stuff after all and not meant to hold anything too heavy. You want it thick and heavy enough so that accidental kinks wont make a crease in your sheeting. Yet you want it thin enough to not exceed the weight limit on the things. I would try to use more wall/ceiling attachments and also know that the plastic rollers may wear out faster due to the extra weight on it. I obviously haven't done it before so these are just opinions. You're on your own with the special mod here.

Marcy KD The Kvartal top and bottom rail is $5.99 each right now and you get two roller things each. I imagine even IF they sold the roller things, it'll go for like $1.99 each anyway so it's not that bad but that the only way.

Alexander Montalvo I think so. I used wall mounting brackets in the video. They also have the ceiling mount types. In your case, you would use the ceiling mound and drill into the top window frame and hang the rails from there. You might want to consider if the single and triple rails might be too deep and might protrude out of the frame. Also, I never tried this, but you may need a set of ceiling mounts for each set of rails.

I’m installing the Vidga tracks. I have mounted the 3 brackets, now before I cut the tracks I am curious as to how many inches should the track extend out from the outer brackets??? I can’t find anything on this! Mine are, from left bracket to right bracket 86.5 inches. Do I extend it out 1”, 2”, 3”????? What do you recommend? Thanks!!!

No idea how Vidga tracks are similar to Kvartals. You need enough room off the ends to slide them in. That's one mistake I made.

Hi Thanks for this video. This was my only reference to fix my sliding panel. I could finish everything in 5 hours just bcoz of this video. But how did u lubricate the track (meaning what product should I use). I am farely new to DIY.

+shan1901 Wow, that's fast. =D I'm so glad it helped you out! Thanks for telling me about how this video helped you because it really gets me excited about making more DIY vids. I just used silicone lubricant spray. Plenty of people would advise NOT to use WD-40 because it's a de-greaser not a lubricant.

You may have wanted to overlap the opposite way so a person would not be able to look inside toward the living are but instead if they tried to look inside it would be at the wall...and the panels could be overlapped more to prevent peepers altogether. You did an excellent job otherwise, this is really a very well make and informative video.

My husband used your video to install our Ikea Kvartal system, it was GREAT! However, we are having trouble getting the curtain panels to catch on one another when pulling open in each direction. Can you provide any help in pictures for how to put the "catches" on correctly so this works?

Kim Eberly Did you already put them in and they just do not work at all? Or are they failing to catch once in a while? The once in a while problem can be solved if you have single rails and triple rails by aligning them very close together in parallel. Even remove the end plug if you have to. I could post a follow up video on this but that may take me a while.

Great video brother! You did well ! So here we are almost 3 years later, any thoughts on durability? How have they held up with daily use? Also, what are you thoughts with regards to how much light these things block out? Our sliding door at the back of the house lets a LOT of light in later afternoon and my wife and I love to watch movies at that time occasionally. Percentage wise, how much light do you think they eliminate? Again, well done man!

It still works like day 1 but I don't exercise it too much. I'd say they let in about 25% with the type of fabric I got. They have others.

Where do I get the rod from? Do I buy it seperate or does it come with all the boxes like allen keys?

I guess if you can get the same thing for that then it might be better to get that to save you some time. Is it good? I'm still using mine and still really like the look. Time? It's not worth the time since you can see in the video it'll take a good day or two to install the whole thing. I generally like DIY whenever I can so I enjoy it on top of saving money.

Could I buy fabric from the fabric store and clip them with the ikea hardware? They don’t have any fun designs

Isabel Salazar I absolutely love the way it looks now. Very modern, absolutely looks better than a regular blind to me, and it's held up since I posted this video, no problems so far. I shopped for a similar type at Home Depot and it would have costed around $500-600 since I would have had to be custom. Yeah.... 8 hours since it was my first time putting it up. Probably 6 hours for the second one.

I can't figure out how to get the panels to slide together....like I pull them draw rod of one and they all should open, right? any pictures or advice?

Thanks for your video. I like the system, in particular the tightly configured aluminum track, but I also see how flimsy the non-ball bearing rollers are. I'm a cabinetmaker and could readily mill UHMW plastic slide strips to fit inside the track. I'm thinking I'd probably make the slide strip as long as the width of the panel, then devise a way to connect the fabric header to it. I haven't had the Kvartal components in hand yet for close inspection. Given your familiarity with the product, does my plan seem mechanically feasible to you? Thanks again for your post.

Michael Schuler It does seem feasible but I worry about the friction if you put the whole length to slide against. I would so the same IF the original ones breaks. Why fix something that isn't broken yet? If the lifetime is 3 years, I would be inclined to just buy them again to save effort.

BeatTheBush Thanks. Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought you said that one of the little roller pieces broke before you could even get the unit assembled... In any case I'll take your advice about avoiding full length slides to minimize friction. That said, I thought of UHMW because of its durability and also because I have found it to be somewhat self-lubricating in other sliding jigs and fixtures I have fabbed in my shop for applications where the sliding elements were significantly heavier than those here. But I must agree that I might as well wait for failure before seriously considering the hassle of re-inventing. Another element in my potential adaptation (cannibalization) of this hardware system would be (for architectural purpose) the desire to substitute 1/4" hardwood plywood for the fabric panels. They would nokt be terribly heavy, but could match up with other millwork items in the space they will divide. Thanks again for your well produced post. It was really effective for any of us considering Kvartal purchase without the opportunity on test-drive ...

Michael Schuler You are very welcome, very glad my video helped. =D It is one of the hook pieces that keeps them spaced evenly that broke, not the roller. You probably would need the UHMW stuff if you're going to hang 1/4" wood on there and probably beef up the hanging elements too.

Michael Schuler 45mm and 15mm exactly. +/- 0.01mm. And you know, the ends have plastic caps that will keep you from stacking them unless you do not use the end caps. Those will add a little bit more and I have no measurements for those. I'm guessing about 4mm added to the thickness for each cap.

Question, the part where you had to re-cut the rail for the 1 3/8" clearance. Is this needed on all installs where the edges would touch? Such as inside a window, and you need to do this becuase you installed the holder would you need to have the clearance if you used the ceiling mount?

+david fujimoto Nope. You only need the 1 3/8" clearance if you use the wall hangers. If you use the ceiling mount, you do not need the clearance.

It's sorta fun in itself because you're building something. Just take it slowly and take breaks if you get tired. I suspect it's so cheap because you're trading the low price for the extra work you have to put in to set this up.

Drey White Did you take a look at the Anno Tupplur fabric for the curtains? bit.ly/1tDSk6m They look pretty opaque and seems like it wont be see through.

I got three panels I just painted them white again and it worked good made them more solid now I could have used any color really, MY Question is , Is there a Way to Straighten the edges i like the pattern how do I re make them go flat instead of the sides of the fabric folding forward , and you know they do that, I went to the store and some already look like that now in the store already , any suggestions I hesitate to iron them i have washed them and bleach them that worked before then now I painted them they had yellowed with time of course , hope you get Ideas that why I'm writing details I just need to figure out how to make them flat again ? +JOEY E You are not supposed to wash them or bleach them!! The material must be stiff and if you wash it, you are removing the stiff starch of it and it will become softer to the touch and obviously have more flow that creates waves or the folding of the edges. Since you already washed them and bleach them, I don't see why not you should try to iron them and stiff starch them again. You can make it from scratch. You will need starch powder, water, a vessel for mixing (in this case a kitchen sink, and something to agitate the solution). You can use a scrupulously clean plastic bucket, if you like, or a big enamel wash basin. I would avoid aluminum as it tends to discolor things. Mix 1/2 Cup starch and 1 Cup cold water. You need something large enough to soak the shirts in solution. Pour in the solution you just made. Mix well. Then add 1 qt boiling water and mix carefully. Let cool down and spray that in the curtains, wet them well and iron them.

well they needed paint they had turned yellow and they ought to make them washable , but anyhow I found out that no the washing did not take out any starch nor do they have any, i already fixed them and added more screws , that helped, and i painted them a fresh white. and they are beautiful again better then new. even added some Teal to the Pattern I'm an artist I got my ways lol love them designer of my own. they are old and out of stock I didn't want to get rid of the design I don't like the new designs at Ikea . so I made pretty much my own. with them. and upgraded them. , thank you for trying to help

my wife is interested in this "panel curtain" idea from IKEA, so I was hoping you could clarify something for me. to have a completed project, do you need just the panel curtains + rail/track, or do you also need something called a "panel curtain holder" (from their website $10cdn)

"Panel curtain holder" are those strips of metal that holds the curtain itself. So you need a whole load of parts. You may also need the things that holds the track to the ceiling or wall.

For these IKEA assemble yourself things. EVERYTHING is separate.

You mentioned lubricating the tracks isn't it possible for the panels to get dirty on the top if you use some type of oil? In fact how do you clean the panels?

Shelley A I didn't use a standard squeeze bottle oil but rather a aerosol silicone spray: amzn.to/1lutZ15 It's a bit expensive on amazon so I recommend getting it at a local hardware store. I use this over WD-40 because it is actually a lubricant and will last much longer. WD-40 on the other hand dries out and works best as a de-greaser. The silicone spray is thin enough that it doesn't drip down at all. The panels are still new so I think if I ever need to wash them I could take them down and submerge them in soapy water and rinse.

Also, you said you cut both of the main rails equally rather than just one. Was there a benefit to doing it that way? Thanks.

I bought the system over a year ago , just now trying to install , thought I had everything needed but there aren't any screws to attach the brackets to the system???? Good grief these are frustrating to say the least .

If I remember correctly, I think those screws that attach the brackets to the rails comes with the rails.

Hi, thanks for the video. I bought 4 single rails because i need 4 panels. Anywho, hubby is pulling his hair out right now. He can't figure out how to make 4 single rails work so that they are all connected and and slide like they are supposed to. (aaaand that's how the fight started). We can't just go to IKEA because ours would be 2 hrs away- bummer. Thanks for your help

C Morrow I never had 4 single rails but I think the trick would be to not put the plastic end caps on. Arrange the rails as close to each other in parallel as possible and the connecting plastic hooks should connect and allow you to pull all of them at once. Good luck!

Hi! Thank you for your video! Ikea Store tells me it's not possible to have 4 panels that slide together, because the single rail is not as close as the triple rail. How did you proceed? In your second video, you present another setting to overlay the panels. What's the size of this overlay (in inches), to calculate the final length. Best Regards

+MrTheMerovingian Ha! From the video you see I did it anyway. It's true that they wont fit like a glove but you try to squeeze the rails together more rather than spaced apart just as much as the ends due to the plastic end caps.

+MrTheMerovingian I assume you mean the overlap between that panels. It's about 2 inches. Final length would be (n-1)*2 inches shorter in length. You really need the overlap to keep the panels from getting stuck. In fact, I would even recommend 4 inch overlap because mine gets stuck once in a blue moon still.

Great video! You never did end up explaining why you need to cut both slider rails instead of just cutting one. Is it just a looks thing?

TheNewGreenIsBlue Thanks! Its so that the discontinuity in the two sides would be right in the center. That way, the center bracket will hold the weight of each side evenly. You could have it uneven but then the hanging bracket will have to be at the discontinuity spot.

BeatTheBush Thanks! I figured that was the main reason. I was mounting to the ceiling and only needed 30cm from the second rail, so I opted to just cut one, keeping 1m for another area.

+Lynn Letran Thanks much. Yes, assembling and putting this up take a bit of time. I guess that's why its so much cheaper than other commercial options that only requires hanging.

Great video! Just wondering though, how did you lubricate the tracks? We have just installed the same system with 6 panels and they are rough as guts as they slide along and sometimes they don't catch the next blind, very frustrating. Did you lubricate with the tracks already installed or on the ground before you installed them? Cheers

I lubricated the tracks with silicone Lube while it was off but I supposed you can lube it while installed also if it has a straw nozzle. Wear a mask tho to avoid inhaling the spray. Are you sure you do not have any debris in the track making it rough? It may not be catching because the tracks are not close enough together, I.e. a triple and single needs to butt up against each other.

+Nicole Bradley Dual triple as in two rows of triple in parallel or a single triple. What I mean is the separation between more than one rail set should be pretty close in order for one panel to catch the next one. Even though you can put more than one set of rails in parallel, it seems the end caps are not designed for this. The end caps actually separates the sets so that they do not catch well.

+BeatTheBush yeah I've noticed they are really designed for more than one track parallel. our parallel tracks are definitely butted against each other. We took the panels off last night and lubricated the wheels and this morning they are pretty good so we'll see how they go. Thanks, appreciate the help from you and your video

So hard to show what I mean. Let me do one more try. Each "-----" is a triple rail. So if you have four triple rails, 2 length wise and 2 more running in parallel, I'm talking about the spacing between the rails running in parallel, not the connection connecting them lengthwise. The plastic end caps makes you space them apart about 2 mm. If you force them to touch at the center and/or shave the end caps a bit, the panels will connect better.

I have these (already installed) in my new house and your video has pretty much convinced me to take them down... I love the look, but they are so flimsy and always get caught on each other when I open them, which is causing the fabric to ripple. I see that Levolor makes a similar system... are you familiar with it? The sample system at Lowes seems to be more robust. Thanks for your input!

Holly Legare Awww really? Sad to see them go down since I enjoy mine still. Yes, I have to be careful when opening and closing them so they do not get caught. I also take care to use the stick to open and close them so that I do not touch them and make them dirty. I thought about screwing down the brackets (hooks that catches each panel) in a slightly inset of about 2" so there is more over lap when you fully close the whole thing. This would make them not get caught on each other. This is probably going to take a little bit of modification. I did look at the Levolor and the like at Lowes or Home Depot. They are indeed more robust but covering the same area will run you about $600 which is close to 4x the cost of these.

Holly Legare The brackets are held on by a single screw. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a2aVyrp6eNvQZrQ.htmlm2s I would try to move the smaller bracket in 2 inches. There are pre-drilled holes and the screw should fit fine. The thing that requires modification is probably the plastic braket because you cannot put the bracket in anymore than just the end. You would have to shave off the extra material so that you can do this. Alternatively, I can see the same thing is possible with the larger bracket and will achieve the same results. Looks like this is complicated enough to warrant a video on how to do this. haha... I'll put one together in the near future.

+franchesca peters Depends. If you want them all to open up and all stack in front of each other then yes, you need five rails. If you open 3 to left and 2 to right then you only need the one triple rail.

Ok thank you. Its really a challenge to know all that you need with this system from online. So many different parts sold separately. Its annoying especially since i would like a sheer curtain to the back and a black out drape to the front. This far in my cart I have two triple curtain rails, four wall hardware, five curtain panels, five top and bottom rails, three block-out curtains, single rail, glider and hook ( I think this is for the blackout drapes), curtain hooks, and a draw rod. Is that all I will need and Do you have any recommendations for what I could use to hide the curtain rails or make them more attractive?

+franchesca peters The curtain panels will need to run on their own rail. Each panel has its own rail. You will need two triple to span the width, therefore you need 2x2 more single rails for the other 2 curtain panels. Then you will need one rail for the black-out curtains (one rail meaning enough to span the width). So by my account, you'll need 6 rails running in parallel so it's better you buy a total of 4 triple rails. Make sure two triple rails is long enough to span the width of your opening. Four wall hardware is a good idea rather than three because this will be a bit heavier than my setup. You want to choose the four wall hardware for either the ceiling or the wall. Never tried hiding the rails but maybe you can use the remainder of the curtain panels to cover them?

Oh ok. So people don't have to go hunting for another commnet: it's when you have two rails long, the center hanger can be kept in the center. if you cut one and not another, the weak point wont be right where it hangs and wont be as sturdy.

+fe cliff Sure. I installed it around 6/2014 and it now has become close to 2 years using it. It works the same as the day I installed it so nothing has changed. I did need to modify it slightly due to the over lapping panels getting caught. I documented this with another video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fqeu18iuc827ns4.html Other than that, know what I know today, I would still use this system as it is very cost effective and it looks great.

I am seriously so thankful you have this tutorial on the great world wide web as Ikea's minimalist instruction approach is a bit confusing on some of the more involved products like the Kvartal system. I have a couple of more questions, and I know you may not have first hand knowledge with them, but do you mind giving me your opinion given your experience with Kvartal? If you have the time to let me know your thoughts, I would sincerely appreciate it! :) (1) Do you have any opinions on how this system would function with regular curtains vs. the panel curtains? fe cliff Sure glad to help. Lol, very good questions and I actually have to look at mine to figure out the answers. 1. They have those hooks to attach to the rails instead of the panels but I've never used the curtains myself. I assume it would be less complex than the panels since the curtains just hang down. 2. I don't like this flush mount hack because new mounting position is weak against the weight of the tracks. While it may look nice now, any pull on it will easily pry the whole thing off. This is even if you use the plastic drywall anchors with your screws. 3. Cutting the 24" to 12" would probably work fine. You would need one 24" panel set to make each 12", you will not get 2 12" sets because of the hardware needed. 4. Never used the Kvartal hacksaw. You can use any hack saw really. Any hacksaws would make a decent cut freehand but if you're picky you might want to use their cutting guide for the Kvartal.

Thank you so much for responding quickly. I wanted to get it done this weekend. Everything else was so smooth, but the connecting part. I tried putting the Track 1 with the rod on the very front track, then I put on Slider Track 2 on middle track (this is behind #1) and then I put SliderTrack 3 in the last track nearest the window. Still not catching as I pull the rod. So now I am getting back up on the ladder and trying again :(

+Mercedes Freeman There are different ways to configure it. The final closing panel could be on the left or right side and the way I did it is to have the closing panel in the BACK of the stack. One thing to realize is that the stubby connector (one without the rod connector hole) catches things on BOTH sides and so does the other connector. This allows for the whole stack to be spaced out when closed and stacked together when opened. This part is pretty tricky and I advise to set it all up on a table first before installing it so you wont be going up and down the ladder.

So on each track should I put the two types of stubs and it doesn't matter which end gets the type that can take the rod hook ? I'm just going to only have 1 rod pull. That I understand. Do you want to pull the rod left or right to close the blinds? And would you be okay with having the last blind (the one with the rod) to be in the back of the stack?

+Mercedes Freeman Each panel comes with A and B. So the way it worked out for me was to indeed put two As in the panel nearest the glass. Q2: yes that's correct Q3: Just repeat the configuration of the middle panel as needed. Best way to do just figure it all out is to just put the rail on a table and install all the panels without the cloth part on the rail. Then you can fiddle with the plastic brackets until it works. Even with the diagram in Q2, I would make sure it all works correctly before hanging the panels.

Can I use this on 117" width window?

Yes, the system is modular and you can make it as long as you like. You just need to get enough rails to span the length.

Yes, your video is SO MUCH more real world then watching the 2 chunky Swiss chicks putting it up on a fake wall. Since the time you put yours up, have the little plastic rollers held up. My wife wants this installed in my 4 year olds room. Once those little plastic rollers snap, are they easily replaceable? Thanks for the great video. I will try my best to talk my wife out of installing these!

I got the single rail system, and when purchasing; I made sure to get an employee to help me, so that I had all the right parts. I was about to install and decided to watch a few install videos first. Despite being an accomplished carpenter, I knew it was best to be safe with the trickier Ikea products. Instantly I realized the Ikea employee did guide me to get the all the right parts...For just one 24 inch section! Hahahaha... come on Ikea! Maybe I should have known I didn't have enough, but the tracks all come bundled, and without knowing how it worked, but seeing multiple rails, I figured it was enough. Silly me. I'm not sure I'll go back and get the rest of the materials... I want to make a movable green screen for my studio; as in, it slides out of the way when not in use, and thought this was the best way to go. Do you think it would work well for this application? Oh yeah, nice job!

+Jeigh Neither Hum.... movable green screen. I don't think it'll work because the panels are not continuous. If you try to remove the green in post, the lighting will not be uniform and you'll likely get some weird vertical artifacts at the edges of the panels. But.... if you don't need to to be perfect, I guess it'll do. THEN again, I have yet to use some green screens myself so just my 2 cents.

+BeatTheBush Yeah, that's what I was thinking after I saw your install... The fact that they don't really overlap a lot, could cause light bleed & unwanted residuals. I might do it backwards then... Paint the wall green & use decorative panels to cover it during down time. Thanks for your input!

I've used them both, but the rolls are really expensive, and if you don't already have a psyche wall built, and the giant pin & dowel to hang it from; well, those are usually expensive too. I guess you wouldn't need a psych wall. I can't remember the brand, but there is a nice type that somehow self-blends. Plus, it's just a personal studio, so I won't have industry lights on it. In fact, I'll keep things as dim as I can get away with. When are you planning on making the investment? If you do it sometime in the next month or so, and remember this thread; let me know what you decided to go with, and how it works out. I will do the same ;)

+Jeigh Neither No time frame on when actually as I don't have a need for it other than to play with. If anything I was just thinking of a roll that hangs from some metal tripods that comes with the set.

Don't know where she's from. The Smart panel look so easy to install and display. I need in my life. . Altho your look very easy too. It look hard 2.I just like options. . Ikea is close to mi.

B BG You are correct in poor quality. The rollers are plastic and could break with wear. At the same time, blinds gets dirty and dusty over several years so I'm more for buying it again in a few years. Thx for the link. Sehkan Chance Looks like less hardware and should be cheaper. I didn't like how it uses one rail and so each panel will rub against another every time you open an close. The system looks just like a Kvartal but you use just one rail and lots of hooks instead. bit.ly/1wo0wpX

Yes that what I thought but she made it look Easy to assemble. I bought the parts to do the one like you did from ikea. But scared to tackle it. I will sometime this week.wish I had video appearance like you or I'd send you the video. Will let you know the out come tho and any trial and tribulations along the the way

This thing has been above my window for about 6 to 7 years and I can't get off!!!! The rails that mount on the wall won't slide anymore. The metal pieces are stuck to each other :'( I don't know what to do!

You mentioned that if your doorway is longer than a single rail, it's best to cut both rails to the same length instead of leaving one rail full-length and cutting the other one. Why is it better?

John Gordon If you had two rails cut to the same length then you can put the additional hanging support in the middle. It'll look more even and it will be structurally stronger.

Pakito Morales Not a problem! If you don't have the saw machine you can just purchase the hack saw and saw guide block Ikea has right next to this item at the store. For the alignment of the panels, use anything square to alight the top/bottom piece like a board from a shelf or large poster paper.

For the smart panel that is only single rail, can you not just use the Kvartal single rail with these: www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70188683/ ?

If you used the ceiling rather than wall hangers I believe you could have gotten further in to the corners.

+Tracy Ferguson Great idea. I decided to go with the wall mount near the ceiling because the ceiling was covered in popcorn and was not perfectly level. Could use spacers but I would also have to use two sets of ceiling mounts since I had a 3 + 1 rail setup.

why did you only show night view, i would like to see how or if it blocked out the sun light

Pakito Morales You can try taskrabbit.com you can hire people that have a track record of handyman work to do it for you. Btw, the tool should only be $10-20 ish since it's meant to be one time use.

Why do you cut each rod. You didn’t explain that as you said you would?

How about if you need 5 panels? 100 inches wide is my wall.

There's a hack for this where you only need 2 rails for multiple panels. Install each panel in a zig zag fashion - not sure if they will link together this way though? I think this was on Ikea Hackers.

Yeah... you can but the draw back is that they will not open up fully. I really do enjoy opening up my windows all the way at times so even knowing this before hand, I would still do one rail per panel.
