How to install a wiring harness + turn signals in a Ford Model A

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Athena, the "hooptie" 1931 Ford Model A is gets a new wiring harness with TURN SIGNALS! Here's how to install a wiring harness in a Ford Model A. Also how to add turn signals to a Ford Model A, making it much safer to drive in modern traffic. This Model A is losing a lot more of its hooptieness in this episode, almost not a hooptie anymore. Thank you to Harry Buckwalter, Mark Limmer, and Paul Moore for making this part of the Operation Hooptie project possible!

    This is another example of how basic and very simple the Ford Model A was. The wiring harness for the Ford Model A is very basic and simple. Also the wiring diagram for the Model A Ford is very simple and uses one page of paper. Up until the 1960s the wiring diagram and wiring harness for a car was simple and used one sheet of paper. With today's modern cars with all their micro processor based electronic controllers the level of complexity of wiring diagrams and wire harnesses has increased dramatically. Today the manufacturers wiring diagram for a car is a large book with over one hundred pages of diagrams.

    Thank you so much for NOT putting LED lights in that A. Love the Halogens and they work fine. Love the color combo on that car. Nice. When I was doing that kind of work, I always used electrical tape and wrapped all those connection. If I didn't, a failure would happen when you least expected it to. I forgot one time and yes, a failure occurred resulting in a fire that destroyed my 1970 Mark Donahue SST Javelin on the way home from work.

    Paul I like this vid because it shows that even though you like original set ups, a few updates are worth installing. I was surprised that you said that you hate electronics when finding out that the flasher unit was defective. I remember you saying that you have a lot of really old radios in your collection and that you have referbushed a lot of them.

  • @ModelA

    @ModelA

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes. Old radios are comforting. I hate electronic flashers, I prefer the old relay types. In the previous video you can see that this kit came with an electronic flasher so that if you install LED taillights, they will still flash. It failed. So since I used regular bulbs, I am just going to install an old fashioned relay type flasher. It will not fail.

Paint with black epoxy. Then, while it is still wet and thin, give the part a quick wipe with your cloth that has lacquer thinner on it. Only the paint in the numbers should be left. Let it cure for at least 24 hours in the oven set on 130 degrees F.

In running the harness down the driver’s side frame rail or through rear of the car, I see that you brought the wires around the butt end of the crossmembers rather than threading them through the little narrow holes provided I’m The frame. You are correct, Kenneth and, although he did not really say so, this is exactly how Paul has wired this coil in this car. See? The positive post of the coil IS connected to the distributor (with a key switch in between), as Ford originally wired them.
