How to Install a Outlet Box in a Plaster Wall
Today we are installing a outlet in a plaster wall with a twist! The lath is made out of small sheets of drywall instead of wood. Disclaimer check for wires and pipes before drilling any holes in to your wall!!

I was looking for some insight. This should be called "How to cut a hole".

you need to ATTACH it to something????
That box isn't fastened to anything. It's not solid.
OMGosh!!!! Thank you so much for this old house how to!!!! Mine is100 years old and hell yes i need to subscribe 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Cool video, thanks!
Useful and thorough
The best video on cutting a hole on a plaster wall without any specialty tools, easy to understand, no bs music or comments.
How did you screw or stabilize the gang box?
Ohhh these are the exact type of walls our house has. So hard to find good info on them. I'm going to try out Ryobi's speed saw with a masonry rotary bit and see how well that works...
Mine came from Menards with the SKU # 3615706. It took some time to find a box with long enough wings! Slater old work box, Model # S116W. The wings allow for a 1.25" wall thickness.
how is there only 3 likes???? you need more!
What kind of box did you use that the tabs are set deep enough for a wall that thick? Video is how to cut a hole not how to install.
From abandoned buildings to home improvement...what doesn't this channel have?

We have everything mate! 🌱
Not cool , the tough test part you missed out on , that's mounting it tight , also how about using a metal box for mc cable
Can a guy use a 4 1/2 cut off wheel with an angle grinder instead? Sure would be handy if you could.
02/10/24. Won’t always work. Nothing behind to screw to. I’ve seen a special hanger you can use that slides in between the lath and the box not the greatest thing but better than your way.
You didn’t even check whether there is wire or plumbing pipes inside.
He deserves so much more subscribers
I think one main issue you would have in the old homes is the depth of the wall, our exterior walls had maybe 1 inch behind the first layer of drywall. Luckily the cement wall was so thick that the outlet fit but its touch the rear cement wall. Our home is from the late 1950s and that was still the case.
I think you did a great job with the video. Thanks for no music. Fast forward is nice. Positioning of the camera is perfect. It's easy to understand what you're saying. It would have been nice if you showed how to fasten the box to the wall. I'm sure you must have removed the wings. Most of these "Old Work" boxes don't offer enough wing depth to accommodate thick walls like this. For this reason, it would be nice to know the manufacturer and part number for the box. After poking around I believe you are using a Slater old work box, Model # S116W. The wings allow for a 1.25" wall thickness.

Yes it is a Slater brand. Mine came from Menards with the SKU # 3615706. It took some time to find a box with long enough wings!
wow ok
My house has plaster walls just like that.. It is a pain in the fucking ass.. Im currently remodeling by bathroom.. Uuugggghhhhh.. That plaster eats multi tool blades like a fat kid eats cake
Nice. Oscillating saw would make quick work of that also for all the other viewers

I’ve tried that. The rough plaster layer between the Sheetrock layer and finished layer destroys any type of blade. The teeth are so small they wear out fast.

@@timothyanthony8259diamond grit masonary blade will work on the plaster. Will need to switch out the blade to a wood cutting one once you hit lath.
Wouldn’t asbestos be of a concern?

most likely in all the old drywall stuff. I use full out hazmat in our house just in case... remove it in full sheets and wet it down as much as possible when cutting.
Perhaps an oscillating tool might have worked better to do the cut-out. Just a thought.

Dan Doak i believe an oscillating tool on plaster could cause a lot more damage to the plaster due to the excessive vibrations. 🤷🏻♀️

It has definitely crumbled our plaster, it doesn't cut the same

A multi tool would have been perfect for this job
Plaster is regular, drywall is not.
This is to funny to watch guy clearly doesn’t know what he’s doing
