In this video I'll be installing a new track bar on the Bleepin Zombie Project. The Cherokee XJ recently received a 3.5" bastard lift but we never got around to putting a proper adjustable track bar on until now. This track bar, is longer, adjustable, and is much beefier than the stock track-bar. Since this jeep will be for light offroad use I didn't get the one with the new trac bar bracket, but for a little more dough, you can get a trackbar that also comes with a new bracket that uses a johnny joint instead of the tie rod type end.

    I covered this a bit on my video about death wobble. you have two options, either drill it out and make a bigger hole or weld a plate over the top of it.

    Hi Matt, I always enjoy your videos. Your sense of humor is a lot of fun and I appreciate the information shared. I had my track bar axle end bolt come loose and drop out on my 2001 Dodge 3500 4x4. Fortunately I was at slow speed on a surface street and was able to pull over immediately. I had recently replaced the track bar and failed to put locktite on that bolt. You lose steering control instantly because when you turn your steering wheel with a disconnected track bar the axle moves side to side rather than just turning your wheels. At highway speed this would have ended much less favorably. I will always locktite my axle end track bar bolts from now on and would recommend others do the same. I recently inherited a 2000 xj from my father in law, it has 116k is straight and rust free and I'm looking forward to creating a nice trail rig for exploring northern California and Nevada. Thinking 3.5" metalcloak short arms and 30 x 9.50 x 15 KO2's on stock steel wheels for now. That way my spare will still fit in the back like you've shown us. Thanks again for the informative, entertaining videos with "none of the boring stuff". Chris Conley

    YO!!! bleepin jeep dude! to center the axle-- lay on the floor and measure from the inside edge of the frame rail across to a point on the axle housing. then do the other side- you are going to be cross measuring when your measurements are equal then the axle is centered. IE when the X is equal you are centered.

    I'm glad I found this video so I have a better understanding of what's going on with my 06' Wrangler. My track bar popped out of the "nut n' bolt end" as I was pulling into my lot and I cannot figure out how. My guess is that it was waiting for just the right pothole (like the one in front of the parking spot I was pulling into :) to pop out and/or was poorly fastened to begin with. I'm intent on buying a new one but any tips on how to get that sucker back in there in the mean time?

    Thank you for this video. I did this install this weekend to my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport with 3 inch lift. I have been getting death wobble multiple times a day running over very small bumps including front vibration. Been keeping it under 45 to slow down quickly and using back roads to keep off the highway. Installed the Rustys adjustable track bar and resolved the issue! I had all the standard issues: Could not remove the bolt (used heat and PB Blaster), then the bolt broke on install when torquing (had to replace the bolt)/Old track bar would not drop, had to use a pickle fork and hammer/Adjusted Jeep body over with pushing from front. Thank you again for the instructions!

    Thanks this video was very helpful. I had a lot more difficulty than your demo because I started with the wrong type of pickle fork. I borrowed a pitman arm pickle fork (it's bigger than a ball joint one) from Autozone and 3-4 whacks with a 4 lb hammer got it to release. The axle end required me to soak the joint with PB Blaster overnight, hit it with my small impact wrench, then with about 30" of breaker bar I undid the bolt. Buy a replacement bolt at the dealer. Torqued to 45'-lb, upper to 59

    Hey Matt, I'm an avid watcher of your xj videos. I have learned a lot and thank you so much man! I have a problem that i could use your knowledge on. 1997 xj sport 4x4. Auto stock. Recently I replaced my front axle u-joints and while I was at it I noticed my front drive side sway bar link busing was bad so I replaced it. The next day I started getting a loud popping noise when I turned the steering wheel at low speeds. Sounded kind of like my u joint but noise was coming more from engine bay. Also my drive line started vibrating and gurgling sound when in drive. Both of these would come and go for weeks but now even at start up the gurgling noise happens. I noticed my axle was off center and I got under neath and the trac bar was bad so I replaced it. It got rid of the popping noise and clunking noise when I go over bumps but my axle is still way off towards passenger side. Gurgling grinding noise in drive line is still there can feel it in my feet area and center console area. What do you thinks up? I couldn't believe I couldn't center my axle up after doing all the steps in your video .

I do have a question though, what if when trying to loosen the lower bolt on the track bar, you don't have the tab to hold the bolt on? • @bleepinjeep

    @bleepinjeep

    Jonathan Harris it can be difficult, not all wrenches are the same so try different ones. you may even have to bend a wrench if necessary. you might also try an impact to see if it will come off without having a wrench on it.

    Years later I’ll answer for anyone who happens along here with the same question, the tool is commonly called a crow’s foot. It looks like a stubby open-end wrench in the appropriate size with a 3/8” drive square which goes on the torque wrench

    @@bleepinjeep I have a 98 XJ with a two-inch lift (I have my reasons) and I have the same situation as Gary Harris here, the passenger side tire is an inch farther out than the driver's side. Any thoughts please would be appreciated, my new adjustable T bar is ready to go. Great video, thank you.

    so you don't over-stretch the fastener, bolt, etc. and weaken it. Also, if you're threading a steel bolt into aluminum (like in a transmission tail housing), you don't over tighten the bolt and strip the threads out of the softer metal.

    The purpose of a specific torque is so when I'm passing you on the trail, you don't flag me down saying things like, "My bolt on my blah blah came loose and my such n such came off. Can you help?" and of course, here I am in DEATH VALLEY USA, 115 degrees out and I just saved a guy and his girl friend; because, he didn't think torque wrenches were important.
