Lutron Caseta Dimmers are what I use in my home. Mainly because they don't require a neutral. But in my experience, while expensive compared to other smart switches, they are very reliable. I've never had a no response issue out of the several that I have installed in my home and that to me makes them worth the price. Like Eric says though, they are on the large size and do take up quite a bit of space in the electrical switch box so make sure to do your homework before just jumping into them. If you have the space and budget for them, they are great and I think most people would love them. As an added bonus, if you use homebridge or HOOBS, there is a plugin that you can use to make use of those PICO remotes that come with the switch as a HomeKit button. These usually come with the 5 button variety so that would be 5 buttons that could be setup to control devices or trigger scenes and so forth however you'd like!!

I've installed a dozen of these switches including dimmer and fan switches along with the Pico remotes. You must ground the switch to prevent a shock hazard. If there is no ground wire in the metal box (and presuming the box is grounded) you can add a green or bare wire with a ground screw to the back of the box. Lastly, since these switches are not using the neutral (white) wire, they get power by allowing a small amount of power to actually flow into the circuit. This can cause some led bulbs to glow. This can be corrected by sometimes using a higher watt bulb or installing a "resistor".

I’m glad you mentioned a ground wire is needed. He could have added a pigtail to the box and connected the ground.

If the metal box is grounded, screwing the switch into the box will ground the switch. It’s a decent solution to not having a ground wire, but adding a true ground pigtail is always the best option

Can you do one where you’re replacing multiple switches within the same box? I have one that has four switches and I’m wondering, can you fit 4 Lutron switches in that same space? Or is there another way to replace those

  • @EricWelander

Good question! You can totally fit four Lutron switches in any box designed to fit four switches. You just need to tear off the metal tabs on the side with a pliers. I mention that briefly somewhere near the end of this video but the context might not be clear.

@@EricWelander ok cool! Also, for the two black wires at the back of the lutron unit, does it matter which of the colored wires they get connected to in the wall? I don’t remember hearing that in the video.

@@loganebeling9023 good question but no it does not. If it did, they would be different colours like they are on the non-dimmer version of this switch (which also requires a neutral wire)

There are tons of installation guides, but not a single buying guide anywhere. Which one to buy for what kind of devices? They don't make it simple.

I installed a Lutron Caseta and regret installing it. Very good quality but a big problem for me is that it does not remember the last dim setting...!!

Yup I also did not know this when I invested in Lutron Caseta… but they are pretty much your only option for smart light switches that do not connect to WiFi. My house has enough WiFi devices as it is, and I was not willing to take the risk of installing 20+ WiFi light switches from another brand.

I agree. The videos and instructions are misleading about the main switch not having the capability of storing or recalling the default dimmer settings. Kinda stupid for a smart device.

This is the problem in Australia. We are not allowed to do this. It negates our home insurance in our home. We need to hire a very expensive electrician to do any of these things. I have so many switches in my house - it would cost in excess of $Au 3000 to do this. I would love to find a way to have lights supported in a way you didn’t need to hire an electrician
