How To Install A Herringbone Tile floor on Schluter Ditra XL. Time Lapse
SUBSCRIBE Learn how tile the right way
Herringbone tile floor being installed over ditra in a back hall, a 4"x12" porcelain tile installed on a herringbone pattern. Herringbone tile pattern can be very difficult to get right if you don't plan ahead and do a good layout so you don't end up with tiny little pieces, so it is critical to stay straight and square to keep all the grout lines even and prevent the tile pattern from running off. The tile was installed with a 1/8' grout line over Schluter Ditra XL uncoupling membrane and a contrasting grout color was used to highlight the herringbone pattern.
All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. This video contains affiliate links, which means I will receive a small commission if you click on the product link.

Hello, I want to use the same pattern in my bathroom, which is 5x4, how do I make the edges the same size?
Great work Sal on the tile work and your videos are amazing! If you were in Florida I would hire you to do my floor but since your not I will do it myself. I will be laying 12x24 gauged slate over the Ditra in a Herringbone pattern straight. Your videos are inspirational and very informative.

Hi Sal recently came across your channel and I’ve not stopped watching your incredible videos. I’m a bathroom installer myself and I was wondering if you ever prime the floors before installing the UM or just dampen with a sponge?
@SalDiBlasi

No need to prime, the thinset is designed to stick to plywood. Sweep, vacum, dampen, key and spread your thinset with the proper notched trowel.
I always use durock for underlayment I've never set tile on the orange schluter

You should try it, far superior product.
Sal, Did you seal the slate before you grouted? What sealing product have you had success with? I'm going with a like color grout rather than contrasting.

That is correct
We are tiling up to a 3/4" thick hardwood floor... I thought I read on Shluter's website to use Ditra XL to match this height, but now I can't find that anywhere. It looks like your heights matched perfect!! Do you know how thick your wood floor was?? (I hope all that made sense)
@SalDiBlasi

For a large format tile I will usually use the regular ditra because you have more mortar under the tile. For a smaller tile, the XL work best.

@@SalDiBlasi I don't think I stated my question well enough. We have 3/4" existing hardwood floors. We are tiling a bathroom and I'm worried about the flooring transitions from the bathroom (tile) to the hall (3/4" hardwood). I want them them to be level or same height.

Doesnt putting thinset on plywood cause the plywood to rot? Since its wetting it?
@SalDiBlasi

Rot happens when water is present over time, not from a simple install of a wet product that dries in 12 to 24 hours.
no control lines needed. maybe on a larger floor? why doesn't ditra have ink marks at 6inch? do you think it would be useful? Happy New Year Sal

@@yrulooknatme You have to be sure to stay straight and square and keep your grout lines even. Use whatever helps you do that, a Laser square is a big help, a straight edge and guide lines. This video does not explain how to lay a herringbone pattern. It just shows you laying it out. No detail or helpful hints on how and where to start the pattern. No mention on how to make sure the tiles are level and grout lines are evenly spaced. No mention on long to wait before applying grout. Not a useful tutorial.
