It's a good idea to install a ground anchor even if you store your bikes in a shed or garage for an added level of security; consider the placement of the anchor, the material it will be secured into, and the type of anchor itself.

Just installed the gold rated Oxford one to the wall. A good tip is to not leave tools that thieves can used laying around in the same room as the bikes. If you're storing your bikes in your workshop or garage, just be wary of how easy the access is to your cordless tools, angle griners/drills/crowbars.

Yep. I installed a ground anchor and then built my bike cave on top of it. I run a kryptonite chain through the floor to one bike and use another to chain all of my bikes together.
Very important to keep all your cutting gear locked as well! You don't want to have your bolt croppers and angle grinders at hand for thieves to use. Or keep them away from the garage.
When drilling into the concrete it helps to start the hole with the hammer function off. That way the drill bit jumps around a lot less. Once you have a small hole started then engage the hammer function to drill the rest of the hole.
Tip for getting the dust out.. When running the vacuum over the hole. Have a straw stuck down in there but outside of the vacuum. The vacuum will draw are from the hole and the straw will replace that air acting like a little blower all the way to the bottom. Gets all the dust out.
A pro tip, put a wrap of tape around the drillbit to mark the depth . I hold the insert next to the tip and put a bit of tape just above the insert, then you drill down to the tape.

Great video, thanks. Good, clear, practical advice. Couldn't really ask for more.
Im a climber and we use similar bolts for protection when installing them I also take a small round brush to clean the hole out and a straw to blow out the rest
Where did the power for the power drill come from? Well, from the same power outlet the thief will use for his angle grinder. So keep in mind to install a circuit breaker for your garage power outlets that can only be accessed from somewhere else but your bicycle shed.
Just recently had to install a anti-theft device during a hike & bike in Wrangell mnts in Alaska. I forgot/didn't want the extra weight and hassle of a lock in backpack. So when began hiking parked bike at carpark by park rangers and installed my two stinky riding socks across the top tube woven in between cables. I also left it in hardest gear, shoes clipped to peddles, & helmet woven around head tube cables... I was so happy to see my bike was still there... ...and a hope for humanity. ...or maybe it was the socks that we're the deterent?

You probably just have an ugly bike 😜
I do not have any of these. BUT this guy is right on point. I have a hole I drilled in my wood utility shed floor and the installed a 20 foot long ground anchor. I attach my motorcycle and UTV to it. Frame to anchor. I use a chain with a kevlar sleeve to secure it. I also run a an additional cable lock from one of the wheels to the frame. Fast forward, there has been a lot of bikes stolen from garages in my area as of recent. People have broken into my garage but I still have my stuff. Enough said. Even if your stuff is in a garage, anchor it.
Dust mask. I can not stress that enough.

@@ThinkyPain 110% agree. I work with silica so masks are more than a necessity :).
4:54 with SDS drills you dont need to put all that weight on it to drill, the hammer in the drill does all the work for you, all you need to do is hold the drill firmly and let it drill, even the weight of the drill is enough pressure.
The problem is sometimes if the thief is in your garage, he also has access to your grinder, bolt cutters or crowbars... consider locking those tools into a cupboard to make it just that much harder... the weakest link is where they will attack, so the cables with minimum rating bring the rest of the system down to that level... Make sure your insurance covers the true value of the bikes, and check the insurance companies requirements are met regarding deadlocks, window locks, etc. Ultimately, attaching a hungry rottweiler on a short lead to the ground anchor is the best solution. Also, a webcam to get an alert on your phone and some footage for the police is a good idea too.
Now we know why Doddy is late to a ride -- he's still unlocking his bike
Exactly the advice I was looking for. Thank you.
your bike is most likely going to get stolen in a situation where you just pop in a shop for a drink! It happened to me and to other people I know. I always lock it even if someone says they will look after it.
Thanks for the advice

Awesome video guys loved it. 😀
Top work Doddy... key is making it hard...its never impossible.
Good work sir
Great video, appreciate the efforts.
Tubular locks can be picked pretty easily with just a tension wrench and paper clip. Best to use a quality padlock and ideally have a MOTION DETECTION SYSTEM in your garage with an alarm. NOISE and TIME are the #1 deterrent for most thieves. If lights kick on and sirens fire up as soon as they enter the garage, that's a much bigger deterrent than any lock system.
Great vid Doddy.

Great video Doddy, seems to be a big problem in the cycling industry. 👍
You need an alarm system too, preferrably one that will also call you up.
Nice one Doddy. Been waiting on a security vid from GMBN. Wish you guys would talk about the locks themselves in detail and the chains used. Round chains vs Hexagonal shape and the diameter of lock u-shape vs cutters or grinders. Makes for a few videos I suppose. There are a lot of info out there on the subject but some not so reliable and would be a waste of money to buy junk right off the bat. Thanks again for what you guys do at GMBN
Yes, security! A big issue with bikes. Thank you
If you have a screed floor and a DPM you may wanna use the resin to preserve the damp membrane rather than the expanding anchors
NICE. wish you've shown the final lock process on the ground anchor.
I dropped mine into the concrete while casting the base. You’d need a jack hammer to get it out.
Excellent! I'm just still wondering why a 16mm drill bit for a M10 but apparently this is usually recommended so
Doddy’s spent more on locks than my bikes worth Interesting vid though Ta

There is easy option to fix to concrete and it may not be permanent. They are called concrete screws or thunderbolts. Drill holes and they just screw into holes with no permanent inserts required. Impact gun needed to drive or remove them.
You don't just want a plug in drill drill, you need a rotary hammer. And no, a impact gun won't cut it too. What's used in the video is a rotary hammer.

nice video. is there a video which show on how you hang up your bikes on the wall. it seems theay are hanging on the rear wheel, the front wheel has been taken off, and the handlebar has been twisted in order to save space.
Cordless grinders with a cutoff wheel are the bane of chains and locks these days.
I can definitely see the point in locking bikes in this manner for long-term storage in a less secure location but for the average, everyday use isn't it a little excessive? Wouldn't one ground anchor and an industrial chain be enough to secure bikes? Surely in most people's cases the noise of an angle grinder in the early hours of the morning is enough security?

Did you actually listen to what he said? The idea is to make it as difficult/noisy/time consuming as possible. Plus, an opportunist local scaly is unlikely to carry a cordless grinder.
Isn't there a risk of compromising the integrity of the damp proofing in the garage?
My shed doesn't have a concrete foundation. It has square stones, prob 6"x6" each. Is there a good solution for this? I was maybe thinking of getting a long piece of flat metal and then secure it to several of the stones, maybe 5-8 stones and then put the anchor in the middle? Will that work?
How long does it take to get one bike out, like an hour!?

May I pleased get the Amazon link to that ABUS anchor?

I guess you really don't know about Hammer Drilling you didn't wear any dust protection they do make cordless SDS hammer drills The silicone dust from concrete is very dangerous you think a couple holes no different heads up
Which model of bike wall rack are you using?
Can you put the plugs into concrete flags under a shed

well politicians/bankers etc are stealing us every day...car/bike/house thieves exist because politicians don't care about you.If they did care then a thief would spend 20 years in prison...But they dont care.Well if they steal your car/bike then you will have to buy another one so you will pay more taxes to them.Politicians love thieves.Someone stole my bike a few months ago.And now i must go to the bank to get another loan to buy another bike.So bankers must love thieves.
what if you want to install one outdoors? (I know it's not ideal but still)
If I buy an anchor and happen to move to other house, would it be impossible to remove the anchor without destroying the whole floor and taking it with me?
Was hoping to see the final lock setup =/
What shoes are you wearing in this video?
My house is timberframe with wood floors. What to find a way of securing my bikein the house. Have no garage so its the house.
So this cannot removed when you put them in?
6:33 just use a torque wrench for even torque
Unfortunately, the ground anchor is only as good as the bike lock being used with it. It doesn’t matter how secure the anchor is, if the lock, cable, chain. etc, can be cut, picked, or otherwise defeated, the floor anchor is essentially worthless.
👍🏻 if you’ve done this but can never be arsed locking the bikes up 🤦🏼♂️
I also used epoxy all around the rawlplugs and strong thread locker on the screws 😁
Do NOT use a pilot hole when hammer drilling any masonry.
This is basically the biggest you can’t steal my bikes campaign.
Chain locks are easily silently defeated with hydraulic bolt cutters. That ground anchor could be popped the same way.
link to the anchor used?

The you'd still have to figure out how to get five bikes out of a doorway that are locked together... The floor lock isn't the weak part of this system.
Anyone else see the ground anchor settle further in the hole when putting in the ball bearings?????
can i install one into brick???
Can an angle grinder cut those grounds anchors easily?

So here's a thought; Thief comes in; tries to pick locks, and break chains... unsuccessfully .... but leaves your bikes scuffed and damaged. I'd rather have good insurance, and get my bike replaced I Guess. I do take a good lock with me on holidays, because insurance companies maybe just as bad as thieves in the end. :P

Similar thoughts here: A thief is more likely to break a frame or cause serious damage trying to get the locks off than taking the bikes...then you end up with a broken bike an no insurance payout because they didn't steal it.

@@justinbowyer6760 Not true for everyone. With my homeowner's insurance (in USA), as long as it is inside my physical house with locked doors/windows, then it's covered just the same as the television, jewelry, etc. The important thing is to read (or ask) your insurer and take any precautions to ensure you're covered.
What do you mean by registering the keys?
@reverendremiel
5 жыл бұрын
Register your keys with your insurance company. (Most) Proper locks from reputable companies have serial numbers on the keys (and sometimes on the locks themselves). Note down these numbers along with the brand and make of your lock and give that to your insurance company when you insure your bike. In many cases they will forfeit your deductible if your bike is stolen whilst being locked with your registered lock/key and some insurance companies will even cover the cost of a new, identical bike (or better, if your specific brand/model is no longer available).

@@reverendremiel Thank you. In my country it's very rare to find a company that will insure a bike... and it's very complicated.
"Thatcher rating" seems odd. Is she perceived as that tough?
So they cut the lock and chain and the floor anchor stays in place for the insurance replaced bike. hehehe. seriously though, nice setup to give the thugs something to worry about.
I'm guessing this security is more applicable to a detached garage/shed and not home? I can definitely understand locking up something with sentimental value that's irreplaceable, but if a thief breaks into our actual home (where bikes live), I think they would be far more interested in going after things like the big screen TVs, jewelry boxes, car/house/storage keys, personal financial paperwork like bank info and tax info, computers/laptops, etc. This stuff is worth far more than bikes and is enough to ruin lives.

I've never had a TV worth 5k ......Jewelry box worth 3k but I've had 10k worth of bikes stolen in one hit - had to put them in the Shed for two nights whilst decorating the house. Daisy chained them together with U Locks and Motorbike chains but the lot was carried out in one hit by the thieving scumbags - talk about opportunistic. Still think someone at Evans Cycles had something to do with it as the 5k bike was 2 weeks old and obviously someone had been watching the house.
I live in an apartment building, I would like to store my bike in my underground parking space, but there is nothing to lock the bike to. I cannot get permission to drill anywhere though... wondering if anyone has any unique ideas. was thinking cinderblocks but people could just break those...

First thing that comes to mind.; just get some bags of concrete, and a box made of wood. Pour the concrete, let it dry, remove the wood. After that just drill in your cube of concrete. Make sure the cube is heavy though, like 50kg + with no ways to properly carry it..

Kryptonite Stronghold looks like something an angle grinder would cut through relatively quickly… if someone is going to be burglarizing, wouldn't they bring that kind of tool? maybe you only have stupid burglars. if angle grinders are a concern, they make anchors with rollers like the Almax Defiant

The majority of toe-rags breaking into garages are opportunists looking to grab whatever they can ie electrical tools, gardening equipment, push bikes etc. to sell on. They can be in and out of a garage within minutes with something as basic as a screwdriver. They have no need to be carrying cordless grinders etc. They want to be in and out with what they can grab and be off. Someone breaking into a garage and taking a grinder with them will no doubt be doing so because they already know there’s expensive bikes in there, not opportunists which the majority will be.
