Bought a bunch of these directly from your provided links. Hope you get a referral! To answer my own question, the two cards I'm getting are marked good with a 150W PSU and run around 100 watts. Just hope it doesn't kill my lovely Raid 6 array!

Thanks! Gonna use this method on a newer dell server but just with a longer pciex16 extender out the back to sit the graphics cards/psu on an open air case inside of a server rack.

Very interesting way to do it. I would've personally spent slightly more (or shopped around more) for a server model w/ onboard 6 and 8 pin power. Still -- it works and it's functional That's what matters I'd never cut my 710, 720 or DL360G8 tho that's borderline server heresy lol

What about a server? Plex, Storage/NAS, run some VM's (maybe one to make very anonymous and DL with it, Home Assistant, even a VPN Heck... you can even run a VM for opening suspicious things on a computer (and isolate from the network before opening risky files) I went out, bought some and learned the hard way --- I wouldnt suggest that but still... there's lots of cool shit u could do w/ a server like this.

It works great on my socket 1200 build so I know there is nothing wrong with my GPU but no luck with the motherboard for the dual xeon build which I want to use it for. Any ideas??

This is fantastic. Couple of questions for you. What's the max power you'd feel comfortable with doing the SATA to PCIe connector? I have a Supermicro server I built that is my file/Plex server - going to throw some AMD 480 8 GB cards in there to mine. I think they, once configured, should be around 100 watts. Luckily I have 4 drive bays free (just checked) so I could do 2 drives running off the backplane. On the 3rd drive, do you have to flip the cheap PSU on before you power on the server?

The ATX standard for SATA or Molex connections is rated for 54 watts each. This is on top of the 25 watts coming from the PCIe slot. (133 watts total). Servers have a good tolerance and can push it more, but shouldn't be pushed to 100% for extended time. Also, connecting 3 or more 54 watts could put the backplane beyond it's capabilities. Since I have SSDs in the other bays, virtually all the power is going to the two for the GTX graphics card. As for using the external power for the RTX, I used a power supply adapter (link in the description) that powered the external on and off automatically. They also make a SATA version, so it could be connected to the drive bay to auto turn on the external power supply.

@@ThreeDigitIQ My backplane has 16 SATA/SAS connections to a 6 Gbps Quad channel SAS Raid controller. It's the BPN-SAS3-836EL1. Going to look into what else I could power the PCIe with - there are a ton of fan headers on the mobo as well.

@@ThreeDigitIQ Also those video cards (2xRadeon 480 8 GB) have a single 6 pin connector, which I thought was limited to 75 watts? So rough math time - 54x2+25= 133 watts. That would be pushing it to do 2, even though I'll back it off in the software (max pull current). There is a Molex for a DVD player that is unused; perhaps I'll connect it to one? thoughts?

The Supermicro system board has: 2x PCI-E 3.0 x16 / 3x PCI-E 3.0 x8 / 1x UIO PCI-E 3.0 x8 (for SMCI UIO HBA) or 1x PCI-E 2.0 x4 (in x8). According to Intel's website, "the PCI Express* x16 connector on Intel® Desktop Boards can deliver only up to 75 watts.". I'm going to go pull the cover off and see if anything's printed with the power rating. Pretty sure PCI-e v.2 only does 33-35 watts, but the v.3 does 75. Which would make me sleep easier at night. Where are my glasses again? :)

My R710 has 2.5" drives and I also found out they're much most costly (the hard way). Check used drives cheap, and even use it as a smaller storage Or you can get a JBOD setup connected w/ external cables and an external-facing controller (to have 3.5" externally in a separate small enclosure/rack, and you could put 1TB SSD's in the main server or something) Lots of possibilities. Just make sure your RAID controller does not have a hard limit. My R710's stock card could only do 2TB drives max. Btw, you CAN purchase other chassis/bays and backplanes, and swap 2.5" for 3.5" if u can come across chassis only or the bays separate. Backplanes are all over the place.

I'm kinda new to this. I have a PowerEdge R7525 server and a RTX 3080Ti GPU. Initially I thought I just needed to purchase a riser cable extender and a external power supply for my GPU. I have a current PCIe gen 4 riser cable but it doesn't have a molex cable on it, how can this connected to the power supply adapter?

Use a SATA to Molex cable (Amazon B07BQFKTG7). Connect one end into a sata drive slot (5:40 to 6:15 in the video), then the other end into the adapter. Plug the 24 pin of the power supply into the adapter. When you turn on the server, it will power the sata drive slot, that will power the adapter and switch on the power supply.

You can probably get a longer riser cable and route it though the pcie opening on the back of the server. And mount the server externally like he did for the last GPU. That is what I would do personally.
