How to install GPU in Dell PowerEdge R610 | Nvidia Quadro P2000

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I'm going to show how to install a Nvidia Quadro P2000 GPU into a Dell PowerEdge R610 server! The R610 is a great platform for running hypervisors like VMware ESXi, Proxmox VE, or OVirt from Dell's 11th generation PowerEdge servers. And if you're running PLEX on R610, you'll want to use a GPU for video transcoding, and the Quadro P2000 is one of the best choices.
If you're building your server using an R610, here are some items from my eBay store that may interest you:

    I believe the R620 can only fit 3 at most if you have the 3x LP version. The R710 can maybe fit 3 or 4? But you have to open up the PCIe slots and it depends on how much power they will draw and if you are able to supply power beyond the PCIe slot's capacity.

    Thanks for the video. I got a Dell T620 and bought a Quadro K2000 which thought was compatible. Managed to get it working with ESXi but when shutting down the VM it was attached to it caused a reboot of the ESXi host and bus errors in the iDRAC logs. I had a 8x PCIe nVME card in the same slot and that worked fine. The K2000 is a 55w card and from what I found the Dell T620 should be good for 75w in the x16 slots. Any idea what could cause this?? It has the 740w PSUs and currently had 2 x 2.5 SAS drives, 3 x 3.5 SATA drives, 1 Quad 1Gb NIC and a dual port 10Gb NIC. I love the Dells and more recently bought a 2nd hand Dell R730 for home use too.

    I don't know for sure, as I haven't encountered that problem myself. It could be related to PCIe bus reset issues for that particular card/driver. I assume you did a PCIe pass-through of the device to the VM? Perhaps when it shuts down, the driver used in the VM OS is not resetting the PCIe card correctly on the bus, causing the bus to hang. That's what it sounds like to me...

  • @ArtofServer

    I don't think so. There's a bit more to the riser than just extension of the PCIe lanes. Dell usually has a sensor signal on these, as well as some of a lid switch.

    These particular servers are a bit older and back when they were new, it was not common to stick a GPU in a server. If you got to the 12th gen servers and newer, they do have better options to accommodate a GPU.

    Hello, I purchased and installed one of your modified risers and it works awesome, thank you. I used it to install a Quadro K2200 GPU; however, I am getting no video out of the DP cable to my main monitor. I was able to get the display with a VGA plugged into the front. I can see the graphics card in the BIOS through the IRQ allocation area. I did notice that the GPU shares the IRQ with several other different slots, so I didn't know if that's the reason that it's not displaying over the PCIe GPU. I haven't installed an OS yet as I'm waiting on 2 new HDDs and upgraded CPUs (2 x Xeon X5675). I wanted to update the BIOS and the iDRAC and whatever else I could from USB. Luckily, the BIOS is already the latest. Are there any tricks to getting the video out from the PCIe GPU? Thanks in advance.

  • @ArtofServer

    @ArtofServer

    You can't use the GPU for primary video output. The system bios was never designed to output console to a add on GPU. That will always be from the onboard vga graphics. The GPU can be used for other purposes.

    I've done just that in my R510 with a SATA ssd as a boot drive. It was a bit tricky to convince the bios to boot from it, but lets me use all eight 3.5" bays for storage drives (8x6TB!). I also found it easier to cut down the x16 connector on a video card to X8, than to cut out that stupid slot end.

  • @ArtofServer

    2 жыл бұрын

    The R720 generation of servers usually already have a x16 slot for GPUs and also have a connector on the riser to provide auxiliary power for GPUs. However, keep in mind an add-on GPU is not to replace the onboard Matrox video because console output will not go to the add-on GPU. This is mainly for GPGPU applications or passthrough to VMs.

    This is something i'm currently investigating. If you use a smaller form factor GPU, like Quadro P400, it's not a problem to fit into the R620. But a full height P2000 requires the R620 with 2 PCIe slots (full+half) at least, but there might not be enough length space. This last bit is what I hope to figure out, but I do not currently have a 2 PCIe slot R620.
