Shew....Man...I never would have show the Helicopter searching my property if I would have known how much hatred this would spawn...I don't believe any law enforcement agency has a right to low fly over private property without probable cause...period. I support law enforcement...but I also support individual rights...what's next..walking through your yard, property or home searching for anything you could be prosecuted for?? Taking your property? Taking your right to feed your family? Taking my cattle? My Chickens? Taxing me for the veggies I grow? NO PROBABLE CAUSE...NO WARRANT...NOT LOW FLY OVER PRIVATE PROPERTY? What do you guys think?

Without a warrant, in my opinion, they have no business at all being over your property unless they're in hot pursuit of a dangerous criminal. A helicopter flying over your property, taking pictures, is the exact same as an officer entering your property without a warrant and taking photos on foot. With all the laws today, every single American is violating some unknown law. Having law enforcement go on a fishing expedition on your property is not a good idea. Got a barn with power that you didn't apply for a permit? Illegal Selling neighbor's a chicken? Illegal unless you apply for permits, exemptions and other stuff Crossing a road on an ATV? Illegal Trading a chicken for a garden plowing? Illegal without exemption because it's "Commerce". Sheriff's are accountable to the people via voting and know their neighbors. I.E they derive their power from the "consent of the governed" and know their communities. State Police and City Cops do not. Therefore I support Sheriffs, but not State Police and City Cops.

Hearing the State Trooper chopper reminded me of my Grandpa. He had a back pasture that basically was just overgrown with weeds and scrub brush- he got the idea to plant Citronella (similar looking plant to marijuana from a distance) He ran his riding mower out cutting a path, then cut a big circle out in the middle of nowhere in his field, then planted a bunch of Citronella. and from his back porch, could watch the Troopers hovering real low trying to figure out what was there!!! This is in SW Indiana. RIP Grandpa!!

What size diameter and length of the post you're hanging your gate?

We sometimes run a self tapping screw through the hinge strap into the gate. This helps keeps the hinge from moving over time and would give you another level of security as well.

Andy you are correct ,.. as a fence builder in Texas we always slide the bottom hinge up to so the bar is resting on the hinge, to prevent it from sliding with the weight of the fence and then adding the self tapping screw...gates in high pressure areas we use a 3rd hinge& hook in the center...As don’t check level on top of gate, use the next bar to check it..welding warps the top bar from the factory

Something else we do on our farm is put a screwable hinge into the bottom of the opposite post that the hinges are on. This allows you to pick up on the gate and sit it down on it. It keeps the weight off the post when it’s not in use. It also helps keep your animals in if you were to forget a chain or something. You have to pick up on it to open it.

Hey Josh if you put a self tapping metal screw through each of the female hinges it will keep them from kicking out and they will stay straight on the gate frame because those bolts will work loose in the near future.

I’ve hung quite a few gates. The tip about not tightening the top hinge staub until the gate is on both the hinges will come in handy!

Just installed my farm gate last night...after it sat against the fence for a month. I pretty much did it just like you did! Awesome stuff

100% agree with you Josh! I’ve had the same experience on my farm. Black unmarked helicopter flying and hovering less than 100 ft above my fields and barns during broad daylight! It’s absolutely uncalled for.

Another good step to take is add a little axle grease on the hinges. 1. Helps it open and close smoother 2. Keeps it from squeaking 3. Keeps it from rusting as fast. Since you are already done, just spray some white lithium grease in it

@@mrl550 I'm a drone flyer and if theyre actually flying it OVER you, its illegal. You aren't technically allowed to shoot it/steal it/knock it down but if they're flying over you only 10 ft I believe its your right to defend your safety and privacy. Shame because it makes responsible drone flyers look bad and gets the drones heavily regulated. If they're flying around you at legal heights, its totally legal for them to fly there.

@@mrl550 If You can get GOOD photos of the obnoxious device, contact the FAA. The drone owner's actions are highly illegal!!! FAA has VERY STRICT RULES about operating drones. Definitely NOT allowed to harass people or hunters etc.

It is always a good idea to make plumb marks for the holes for the gate hangers too before you drill the holes. Do not just eye ball them for plumb. This will make your adjustments a lot easier.

You have to take responsibility for what you post. It’s your channel, content and opinions - are yours. Sometimes one offers their opinion and sometimes, when you do so,publicly, there will be blowback. Just move forward. Good channel and supported by many. Cheered!

I've found the best way is to hang the bottom. Use a strap on the post and top rung on your gate . I've hung about 18 gates for pastures and paddocks recently. Keeps me from making too many adjusts. I also place 2x4 or 4x4 under the bottom of the gate on the opening side.

That gate turned out great....I need to go check mine now

Great video buddy, We learned the hard way all gates are not created equal. Put a cheaper metal gate on the barn and a crazy Mule we had busted it like a water melon. Found him about 2 miles down the road.

I could literally only find 2 vidoes on how to hang a gate like this. Very informative thanks.

Back in the early 90's at my other farm the Texas National Guard used my barn as a simulated target for fighter jet bombing runs.Imagine a fighter or 5 coming in low (300 feet) and fast over your head while your working your hay field. First time rattled me but after that it was something I actually liked to see since I'm a veteran.Not even sure what type of fighters they were but it was definitely cool.

I've been having the same problem with A10 warthogs buzzing my tree tops. I posted my concern about my 400ft airspace on social media and was told I was crazy, there was no way they are in my airspace. I fly my drone all the time, I KNOW they were extremely low. It was so loud when they came over I had to cover my ears. I can't believe legally they can violate the 400ft rule, had they sucked my drone into the jet intake, I would probably be the one sued or put in prison. I feel ya!

@@jtc1947 this is in Florida, I wouldn't say they were going slow at all. We had a several day stretch several weeks back where apparently our property was in the path they were using for a few days. Multiple times they flew by low, one time was extremely low, barely over the tree tops low and insanely loud. I love A10s, my favorite fighter, but don't put me at risk flying low.

Just a simple gate installation - never seen anyone do that! Good stuff Thanks!

We also have them plans and choppers flying over our area. I have seen military choppers like the Chinooks fly over and just clear the tree tops. For the folks that dont have a tractor a hilift jack works great for holding up gates.

Odd and funny, odd being just today I had to hang a "farm" gate between my property and the neighbors property. And I sat down this evening and your video shows up on my KZread screen. Mine was just a 10 footer but I, like you was alone, only difference is I'm 72 yrs old. Funny part was I said to myself as you were tighting up the top hinge with a crescent wrench, I said to myself, "turn the wrench around, you are using it wrong". Bout that time you turned the wrench around and said, "there ya go, for all you purest I'm using the wrench right now". I said "WHAT", cracked me up. I'm not a purest by any means, just my grandfather, Pop, drilled that into me. Great videos. I am a new subscriber and thanks for keepin it clean. BTW, I was using the screw in hinge and I agree with you it hard to drill straight, even harder when you're alone, I take a framing square and clamp it to the post with the long part facing down the post and the shorter end facing the side I'm drilling. Square it and level it and use it as a guide as I drill, works good. John in Ky.

these days they can surveil your every move from satelite and you wouldn't even know it. if you have a cell phone they know where you are and who your talking to. if you have one of those amazon things people put in there house to answer questions realize that that thing in listening to you all the time.

one suggestion on the gate, when working by yourself carry a block to set far end on so you dont have to fight pulling it all the way up with the bolt when adjusting it

My gate posts were current-year Osage Orange. I used an 18” ship auger but 3/4” diameter and drove it with a 1/2” drill. I think your flat wood bit is ok for cured pine but I’d worry about wearing that rig out on hedge posts. Just in case someone is thinking that way. 😀 Good looking gate.

Good job. Some self-tapping screws on the gate hardware will keep it from turning on you over time. I learned this the hard way.

Great work Josh could you sometime create a video showing how you get your materials and things that you use on the farm transported from the site that you purchased them from to your farm. It's difficult sometimes like at 16 foot fence it just doesn't fit and most things that we would have to carry it in

Josh, if you put a 3/16 or 1/4 inch self drilling tech screw where the hinge/hanger part goes around the pipe of the gate it will keep things from moving around with time and use.

I always enjoy your videos. As a pilot, I can tell you minimum altitude for a sparsely populated area would be 500’ for an airplane. Helicopters have greater leeway because of their ability to land most anywhere. Police have even greater leeway because they can claim its part of a search for a suspect or operation. I am not sure if an officer needs a search warrant to view from the air. I suspect not because air space is governed by the FAA.

There is no difference between "helicopter and airplane" or "leeway" as you say. The precedent has been established. In United States v. Causby, the case that decided how property rights in airspace would work, the court found that the property rights in the air over a small farm extended up to 365 feet aboveground, and therefore that government airplanes flying at 83 feet aboveground (and frightening the farmer’s chickens to death) were trespassing. FAA guidelines DO NOT trump established case law. Federal law always supersedes any state law. Don't end up on the wrong side of a civil suit.

I'm always concerned when I see a pilot that does not know the rules. The rule over sparsely populated areas is NOT a minimum of 500' altitude. Rather, it is: "In those cases ("over open water or sparsely populated areas.", the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure." That means that there is no minimum if over a sparsely populated area and there are no persons, vessels, vehicles, or structures AND an emergency landing can be made "without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface." Please stop telling people "minimum altitude for a sparsely populated area would be 500’ for an airplane."

You are 100% correct Josh, too bad so many folks jumped on the bandwagon and off the libertywagon.

Josh, you might want to look into a product that is called SHUR LATCH it's a gate latch system that can be locked with your padlock and will support the gate on the lock side, can be found at your CO OP and Tractor Supply also on line. I've been using these on my gates for the past 4 years. Great product. Harley from Georgetown, TN.

I agree. That gate is heavy to be hanging all the weight on that small a gate post.

Just going to throw out a tip that I think will make life easier. I use a auger bit that’s long enough to go through the post. It’s kinda pricy ($20) or so for one but where it pulls through the post it just makes one easier to me. A few years back I had to replace a lot of infrastructure on the farm and had to set many post and many gates on one of the first gates I was hanging I was using the exact bit your using my neighbor who is a older farmer came over handed me a auger bit and said try this haha. Wouldn’t trade that neighbor for anyone super good guy.

Great video and so true!! I have a gate sitting against a tree waiting to transform an old pasture to a new pasture.

Josh next time you put up a gate, place a block under the far end of the gate. That’ll keep you from doing so much wrenching. You can hand tighten that bolt snug then wrench it tight. Looks good; nice fence.

Enjoy and appreciate your videos. Your property is on the ground not the air. Class G uncontrolled airspace is for anyone to use and they don't have to talk to anyone.... Scaring your animals or blowing over your property is a different story. I own land right off of the approach end of the busiest heliport in the country (Cairns Army Airfield)... beautiful sight watching them hover around. Just be glad you don't live around Fort Rucker near a NOE route.

I support all law enforcement and respect the people that run our country and local officials but I think a lot of the things that are going on in our country these days are infringing on our rights. Even if we have nothing to hide it’s the point and the more we let it happen the more they take. We need to take a stand. I live in Pennsylvania and we are being dictated way to much right now with our democratic governor. Remember this is still AMERICA the land of the free!!!

What gets me these days or nights I should say are the amount of drones that are absolutely invading our privacy and probably taking pictures of God knows what and photo shopping them if they see fit.. there are no laws as to any of them having to report where all they fly or anything!! Really urks me!! But yet they gonna say we can't be shooting at them!! Bullhockey!!! Get away from my air space then if they don't wanna get shot down...! I just don't know what they are so curious bout looking at almost every nite.!! They must be awfully bored .. ! Lol..

I want to get a heavy duty farm gate like that but 20 feet wide just in case I ever need to have something go through it that's extra wide plus if there's ever a fire I want to give more space for the fire department and their fire trucks and you can always use like 2 10 foot wide ones or 2 12 foot wide ones which I've done before but I don't want to deal with 2 sets of hinges if possible and having to worry about opening 2 different sides of the gate so I wanna try 1 20 foot wide one sometime possibly in a certain spot but cool video thanks for sharing!

16 feet is plenty wide to get anything through my brother...unless it's a large combine or something like that. You will have to do 2 gates if you want 20 feet, but I've never had anything that wouldn't fit through the 16ft gates on this property....never. I get tractor trailers here all the time and 16ft is the standard....they still have about 4ft on each side. 20ft gate would be too hard on the gate post and hinges and opener

Just a helpful hint when hanging gates. Bring scrap pieces of wood to help raise the gate up to level. Makes it easier when doing it by yourself.

Helper, tractor, block of wood, lots of ways to lift the far end of the gate. I wouldn't cut those bolts too short. Things shift and when the gate goes out of square it is easy to square it back up.

As a helicopter pilot he was doing nothing wrong. Land owners do not own the airspace above their land. If he is not within 500’ of built up areas which is not a farm but more like a town. Anyway love the videos Josh keep it up, watch them all the way over in Germany.

The Right Tool for the Right Job... Adjustable Wrench = Hammer, Adjustable Wrench = Ratchet. I bent my Adjustable handle using it as a Pry Bar!

A two way lockable gate latch would look good on that gate.
