How to Install a Downdraft Range Vent

Installing a down draft vent for your range is a clean looking way to vent your cooktop surface while at the same time leave open sight lines. We installed a GE 5 burner cook top and a GE stainless downdraft vent. You can find them or similar versions on Amazon:
GE Stainless Downdraft range hood vent - 36 inch
www.amazon.com...
GE JGP5036SLSS 36 Built-In Gas Cooktop
amzn.to/3r9CKBq
Also known as a downdraft range hood, it works not by venting upwards but sideways across the cooking surface. Used in combination with a counter cooktop, the downdraft vent changes the shape of typical venting of the cooking surface.
We demonstrated how to vent the cooking surface by going down to below floor level and then to an outside wall. The downdraft vent can also vent to the right or left depending on you particular set-up and needs.
As far as performance goes, it does an adequate job. You are giving up a little in the performance range in order to gain by not having a hood that hangs down in the middle of the room.

Installation is not overly complicated beyond routing the ductwork out of the house. That would make this a medium to hard DIY project depending on your level of experience.
In the end, going through the effort of mounting this downdraft hood / vent is will worth the effort.

    Does this type of downdraft vent require a completely dedicated cabinet unit, or does a standard counter allow enough depth to include a small drawer or 2?

    Rather than cutting a hole through the tile floor and running into our crawl space, could I simply run a duct underneath the cabinets out the side of the house? Standard cabinetry has 4 1/4 inch clearance underneath.

    Thank you for this video. What is the standard depth inside a cabinet? I am looking at a 30 inch cooktop. And a downdraft vent like the one you installed. But my cabinet depth inside is only 22 3/4 inch. It doesn’t appear there’s enough room to fit this ventilation even though it’s very thin. I’m afraid we will need to push out the back of the cabinet which seems to be a lot of extra work. Any thoughts/advice from you? Thank you

  • @Housebarons

    @Housebarons

    Hey Ming, I’m thinking it is a standard depth cabinet. You’d be most sure by getting the exact dimensions of the cook top and downdraft you were thinking of buying. The downdraft we installed is right next to the cook top - no extra space. I might have a chance to check that cabinet measurement in a couple of days since I happen to be going to stay at that house for a gathering. If so, I’ll let you know….

    Hey Cristian, Because the motor is in the lower part of the base cabinet, I’m guessing damage is unlikely. At least in our experience it has shown no signs of a problem. I suppose reading reviews on amazon or store web sites and trying to get an average opinion might help. Maybe some brands are better than others. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    I have a Jennair downdraft range and the new upgrade requires a 220volt. Which I have to add that. The gas line is in the middle front and the new blower will sit on that area. How do I move the gas line, it looks like a flex line.

  • @Housebarons

    @Housebarons

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Skip, A flex line is a nice option. If you have gas line to remove, that might best be done a plumber because removing lines can potentially break connections in other places where connections are made. All depends on your skills and experience. Cost to have that done should not break the bank. If you are doing it, make sure all connections are leak tested. Thx for watching.

  • @Housebarons

    @Housebarons

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Lynette, You sound like you are on the right track. Are the old & new cooktops both downdraft? That means the exhaust doesn’t go up to a hood and then outside but rather down and exhausted outside. If they are the same, then you could contact a handyman or go to the contractors desk at the big box hardware store and ask for someone to do this. If they are both downdrafts, then it should be pretty straight forward. You are looking for someone to “connect the exhaust ductwork from your new cooktop to the existing exhaust ductwork that the old cooktop used. “ Should be a simple job - maybe $100 . The big box stores - Lowe’s, Home Depot etc. have people that install appliances , cooktops whom they sub-contract the work to. They should easily be able to give more than one name/ company. Ask for a price upfront. They can install a dishwasher for $128, so 100, maybe $150 ... but there should not be a lot of materials. Just labor. Thx for asking. Don’t hesitate to let us know if you need more clarification. Hope it works out! Thx for watching!

    When the new construction super keeps asking for make up air estimate on a telescoping range hood, meanwhile they can’t show up to the estimate due to meetings with lawyers… it’s no wonder. 2 seconds on KZread explains the entire operation. It’s not make up air they were looking for, it’s external venting for the down draft, unless they plan on cooking in a closet 😂

  • @Housebarons

    @Housebarons

    Hey Mr…., What matters is the volume of air passing through the duct. Let’s say you have a 6 inch round duct. That 6 inch section sliced through amounts to 27 sq inches ( pi x r squared) or the volume of a circle. If that was original and correctly sized for that space, then you don’t want to change that volume. So ideally you’d want a 3x9 inch rectangle which also has a 27 inch volume. Maybe 3x10 since I don’t know that they make 3x9 inch stock. But you get the idea. You want the volume to be close - shape is less important. Thx for watching.!

    Dear lord!!! This vent is now useless. Did you see how many elbows were used and the length of the duct. So for every 6" elbow you lose about 3-4% cfm and 7-10% cfm on the length of duct it has to travel. For this to work properly ypu would need at minimum 500cfm but with this FUBAR install it'll only get maybe 330cfm not enough to vent even a fart
