I was always confounded over how carburetors work and could never figure out what the diaphragm did. After watching your videos, it all makes sense to me now. I have 2 carbs who's diaphragms melted into a gooey mess. Now I know what to do. Thanks!

I took a two year course on motorcycle repair when I was 15 (im 52) and have had motorcycles all my life and do all my own wrenching, cars and bikes. I had a great instructor like you who really new motorcycle and small engines. He new CV carbs in and out. I was unaware of the grooves at the bottom of the slide for the plastic spring retainer. I just cleaned and freshened up the carb on my 95 dyna but haven't put it back on the bike yet.now I have to go home and take the cap off to check it

Thank you for this and your other carburetor videos. It is this one that did the trick as I had not seated the diaphragm properly after a carb rebuild for a friend's Honda Shadow Spirit. Followed your video and she fired up and ran sweetly.

Hey Shane! Thanks man, as an instructor at Lincoln tech here in Connecticut in the Welding Dept. I can appreciate your dictation and spirit in you craft. Your passionate, and very articulate. I need to clean and rebuild my carb on my 2000 Sporty 883. When i twist the throttle back, the engine is very slow to gain speed..sputters...then takes off.. It sat for a year..so a bike mechanic told me to rebuild the carb...is he right?

I know this is old, but maybe it will help others. My tw200 had the same issues. Sputtering under throttle, lots of white exhaust. Problem was that it was getting too much fuel due to a float bowl needing adjustment.

Hi there my friend. Please do help me out with my doubt. I have a 28mm CV carburettor which is installed on my motorcycle. I have an issue like the bike starts choking when the throttle hits the higher side. When the rpm moves beyond 6k mark the bike starts jumping in rpm and it doesn't go above certain range. What would be the issue? I have tried changing the jets, float and cleaned it completely. No use. Can you suggest me any troubleshooting solutions from your experience? Thanks in advance. Cheers!!!

You should mention also how one can snip off 3 or 4 could off the top of that return diaphragm spring for faster throttle response. Also the little hole down in there, that it gets its air supply from can be drilled out to about 1/8" to increase takeoff power as well 😉.

Hi Roger. Thank you for joining! Think of them as having a birthday and all things being equal is my preference BUT sometimes these are spendy and the customer just wants what is needed. I also think is depends on ultimate performance too. If you want the best chance of all the slides behaving the same, New is the way to go...but then again are all the rings and valves seals equal? Most likely the is some variance in different cylinders and only the most experienced rider or a dyno could tell.

Mechanically sometimes parts are coated with a silicone or teflon and do not need a lubricant like wd40 . Actually coating the part with a lubricant is not good if it has a teflon coating. I use a dow corning high vacuum grease in the groove where the diaphragm seals to the body. It has a high temperature rating and I use it very sparingly. just enough to hold the seal in place. Also that vacuum grease is rated to be used on rubber. WD40 on the other hand is not good to put on rubber, it will deteriorate thr rubber.

You just demonstrated why it is a bad idea to use pod filters on a CV carburetor. The CV carburetors rely on the stock intake boots and box to provide the proper air flow into the carburetor.

  • @How2Wrench

Thanks for commenting...good point for those not understanding why you need to "rejet". The doesn't care how it gets the air as its being "sucked" from the engine BUT to your point sometimes a tuner will just have a throttle position they can't "tune" and this is where that "tuned" intake length can come into play. MOST always it can be tuned but at what cost is the question. Most folks I feel don't understand the time it takes to really dial in a set-up. I always tried to steer my customers away from pod filters for the simple fact of "windy days". Strong cross drafts will affect outside cylinder (from the direction the wind is coming) making it leaner than the others. Can you tune them to run perfectly on a perfect day?....yes...do we often ride on unperfect days...yes BUT those pod filters sure look cool and make it easy to work on! :) Have you subscribed yet to never miss a video? I have seen you use it on rubber parts in several videos, once even on a float needle. Anyone else had experience with this?

Hi Dan. That's a great question. I have zero negative experiences with the use of ANY brand of lube BUT I'm barely using any too. That's over 30 years and this video is six years old. With that being said I look over at my workbench and see WD40 sitting on the carb service station and seems to be "what I grab". I save the PB for stuck fasteners... @@How2Wrench Outstanding, I would love to see how it turns out. Again only reason I question certain stuff like that is due to the constant stigmas we are told about over the years of evolving as mechanics, such as if you use grease on electrical connections that’s non Dielectric approved it can swell/crack damage rubber parts over time. I have never myself seen it happen but if it’s something if we can prevent we always try to be as preventative as we can. I would say silicone lubricant for carburetor o rings and gaskets but I’m sure some people would argue that too lol. I’m not a big fan of WD 40 personally I feel like it’s the type of product that’s ok for most situations but not great or ideal for any situation. I have always been told it has kerosene and other products in it too so I’m not sure what all that would do over long term also. Lastly let me say how much I am impressed by your videos over the years! I would beg to say you might be one of, if not the brightest motorcycle Technicians on planet earth! 😎 I know a lot of people don’t understand the time and skills it takes to produce these videos and the true value it brings to the table. We truly appreciate your time and when I can afford to do so I plan to become a part of the paid subscription videos. Thank you again and again Shane!
