    Thank you so much for this helpful video. I was able to salvage an old motor with damaged hall sensors. It is much easier to maintain the motor without hall sensors.

    thanks for this information! I have 3 36v hub motors that were given to me and most of the hall wires are completely destroyed. This is exactly the video I needed to get them up and running without the hall wires. Thanks again.

    @@H35HRO53 I picked up a 800w 36v/48v brushless controller that would work without hall sensors. Wired up the stator wires, battery, and throttle, now it works perfectly.

    Could you please post a scheme how you have connected the other wires from the controller and to which wire you have connected your speed pedal. I am stuggling to connect brushless motor without Hall but it wil only turn 2 or three stepd of 30 degrees and then it stops. Thanks in Advance, Piet Visser

    Hi I am building a e-bike with a bosch e bike motor this has no hall sensors , the motor is being connected directly to a bafang speed controller . I have made a pedal assist setup on it, but the motor will not run , any ideas can I do a mode to the speed controller hall sensor wires . Or is it a case the speed controller will not work like this . Any controller you would advise make model thanks

    that's perfect! i will have to check what controllers i have now. what is that throttle pedal you have? is it same as an electronic sewing machine one?

    I don't speak for Vu, but if it's compatible with ebike stuff, it probably uses Hall sensor(s) to detect the pedal position. If by "electronic" you mean relatively new, it's probably a variable resistor; the old machines used a rheostat. If you just want some kind of bench throttle control, I'd expect you could cobble together a quick one with the guts of a (normal) ebike throttle, or maybe any hall sensor and a magnet.

  • @deankdx

    @deankdx

    @@fun_ghoul thanks, I'm somewhat familiar with the rheostat ones, but not so much the electronic (upto about 20yrs ago i guess) sewing machine pedals. i haven't seen an ebike throttle as yet, but i may have one from a mobility scooter type thing possibly (I can't remember what i kept from it)

    @@deankdx No worries at all, Dean-o. The ebike throttle is basically a hall sensor on the "stator" part (i.e. the part that doesn't move), and either one or two magnets on the "rotor" (moving) part. In actuating the thumb, twist, pedal or whatever, the magnet(s) get closer to and further from the Hall sensor, varying the output voltage between roughly 0 (zero) and 5 Volts -- or maybe throttle is 4.3V and PAS sensors are the full 5v...I always forget when I don't have a controller to hand! So in short, the DIY version is a Hall sensor, a magnet and a contraption to move them together or apart; you'll additionally need a 5v power supply and a multimeter set to volts for testing, so you can see and set the "sweep". There is an excellent thread on the internet somewhere on "throttle mods" -- I wanna say on Endless Sphere -- which explains basically everything you'd ever want to know, including mods. Worth a search! Cheers. 🍻 P.S. I _think_ the double-magnet ones have the poles oriented the same way, so the whole range or sweep is from North to South, rather than magnetizing the sensor at both ends. The voltmeter will confirm or deny, tho.

    @@fun_ghoul thanks again im struggling to understand that but reading and watching more detailed videos or forum posts i should be able to understand it. I did a basic electronics class over 20yrs ago and attempted the advanced class but the math was out of My limit with phasing etc so I'll be needing it all pointed out in detail i think.

    @@deankdx OK, so the page I mentioned before is actually at Electric Bike Forum, and the thread is called "Guide to Hall Sensor Throttle operation, testing and modification." Trust me, you'll be miles ahead after reading through it, and might well go back to it occasionally.

    3 phase motors are 120degrees per phase. but to position the hall sensors correctly you have to open the motor to count the number of poles also. 1 rotation = 3 phase angles * number of poles

  • @vuaeco

    It's a heavy duty switch salvaged from a kids' Power Wheels. For Ebikes, you need a switch that can be able to handle high current. A regular 1000W motor on a 48V ebike can easily push over 25 Amps. Make sure your switch is able to handle that at least. Or better yet, use a fused disconnect. I use a fused disconnect from a solar system.
