How to install a battery TENDER to a BMW R1250GS | Optimate 4 install

I was having some issues with my battery being low and I would get these weird errors on the GS. It would come up saying; “rear brake light faulty.” And the bike would not start. I would have to let it sit for about 10min and then it would start up.
The dealer told me this was a low battery issue and the fix was simple:
1. BMW recommends charging your motorcycle battery every 4 months
2. And replace the battery every 2 years.
I knew in winter it would be best to get a battery charger anyways to keep everything up and running smoothly.
I love the optimate 4. It’s quality and easy to use. They have graphics on the charger that tell you how what all the settings are. If you ever decided to get the DIN socket cable you can charge your BMW MOTORCYCLE by just plugging in and you don’t need to mess with the battery at all.
I decided against the DIN socket for the moment because I wanted USB chargers in place of my DIN socket.
Yes, I know you can get a kit to move it under the seat, but I just haven’t done it. The newer GS now has the DIN socket relocated under the seat.

I'm thankful that my R1250 GS Adventure has the canbus port on the left side, so I can just plug in my BMW trickle charger in to it. No need for an alternate charger.

Yes the newer ones do. My 1250 is a 2019. They haven’t changed it yet. Idk why they didn’t in 2019. Seems like a no brainer

@@AmericanAbroad1 They've done a few things better on the new models. Two USB ports up front, instead of the canbus port, and then the additional canbus port on the rear side of the bike. Much more convenient.
Best investment you could make when not out every other day on the GS especially with the tracker vampire fitted these days 🏍👍

Of course you can always attach a charger directly to the battery but BMW instructs you to not do so while the battery is installed in the bike. Why? The reason is that many modern chargers are “smart” and will try to recondition (disulphate) a battery if it decides that the battery needs reconditioning. The desulphation process involves the application of high voltage pulses to the battery and if the battery is connected in the bike then all the bike’s expensive electronics also get exposed to the high voltage pulses as well. So there is some risk of damage involved. BMW isn’t going to try to explain how to determine whether your particular charger has a desulphation capability or not so it just tells you not to charge the battery directly in the bike to mitigate the risk. If you have a smart charger and intend to connect direct to the battery while the battery is in the bike you should read the charger’s manual to see if the desulphation mode can be disabled. I use the Optimate 4 charger in its “CAN-bus mode” (sic) direct to the battery because in that mode high voltage desulphation is deactivated. I can’t be bothered with charging via the accessory port.
