How To Install a Air/Oil Separator for Subaru WRX & WRX STI! (GrimmSpeed)

The GrimmSpeed™ Air/Oil Separator for Subaru vehicles has a unique patent pending design that allows you to maintain your PCV Valve while separating the oil out of the crankcase and head ventilation air! Our AOS will allow your engine to run more efficiently due to the separation of oil from the intake system. When there is oil in your system, the result is 1) reduced fuel octane 2) higher chance of engine knock(detonation) 3) worse emissions 4) higher oil consumption. Our Air/Oil Separator will help all of these problems. Thank you to Grimmspeed for providing the parts for the #throtlwrx!

The people suggesting a Front mount IC, probably have never modded a Subaru. Unless you're going with a bigger turbo, don't do FMIC. It will introduce a fair amount of lag. The more ideal setup would be an upgraded (or STI) top mount intercooler.

Mickey I'm a plumber and when I see mechanics cutting hose, I always think; they would love a "pex cutter" for nice clean cuts. I don't know if you have ever tried one but they are cheap and you can pick one up at any plumbing supplier or most likely a decent hardware store. They are incredible sharp and support the hose or pipe for very straight cuts. I'd recommend the Milwaukee tools' cutter if you want to go high end. It's important to twist the tool as you cut but they would beat a pair of scissors all day.

I wouldn't go for a FMIC, but I would upgrade to the STi top mount one. Better performance (it's a bit larger, so it flows more air), and retains the stock location. FMIC introduces too much turbo lag to justify getting one.

Going FMIC might get you some hot boi points but that's about it. Yes, it might look better to some BUT going FMIC is going to increase turbo lag with that tiny TD04 turbo and the install of one is definitely an all day or multi-day install (lots of cutting). If you go FMIC, you should at least get an STi VF39 from that generation. If you want a better intercooler, hit up your boys at Grimmspeed. They make a really nice TMIC that's good to ~500hp. It's a much simpler install, pretty much a straight swap. I run it in on my '04 STi with a larger 20g and have no complaints. It would also be the perfect time to change the Y-Pipe to a silicone one because after 14 years I wouldn't be surprised if the factory plastic one had seen better days.

If you want to go front mount, upgrade the turbo. The old stock tdo4 won't be able to fully utilize it. If you stay stock turbo then go with a better top mount like and STi version or a Grimmspeed TMIC. The turbo will work well and they are good for power in the future. I would also say if the plan was to track the cat or go big power right away then front mount and slightly better turbo like a 20g hands down. It would be a happy medium. That's just my 2 cents! Love the vids guys! Keep this up! The positive vibes, the installs and overall informational content you provide is good for every beginner or advanced car nut!👍🏾👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾😎😎

You are going to need hose clamps on all 3 of those hoses directly off of the AOS itself. Ask me how I know haha. You said they aren't pressurized, but I had a boost leak while getting tuned coming directly off of the AOS itself. We did a smoke/boost leak test and it was leaking from the zip tie. You need hose clamps at least on those 3. Lastly, if you want to change the stock intercooler then just upgrade to an sti one, the oem sti top mounts are good to 450 awhp.

The WRXs small turbo doesn't push enough boost to warrant a front mount. Stock turbos with FMIC usually lead to huuuuge amounts of lag.

Agree with the comments below. In the UK you can very safely push the 2.0l engine to 350-400 on the top mount. Really only do FMIC become beneficial is for big power gains. My Litchfield JDM ran 360bhp/350ftlbs on the top mount. A friend of mine has over 400+ on a top mount but his is a 2.5l forged engine

Tech you could get a fix it ticket for a FMIC, but cops are WAY more likely to bust you for exhaust, or a huge intake if you pop the hood for them. I’ve never heard of anyone getting a ticket for a FMIC. Anyway, with the heat you guys are having, def go front mount, your B.A.Ts will be way lower the just upgrading a top mount. Loving the channel bruv, keep up the great work!

  • @Georgeee123

    @Georgeee123

    6 жыл бұрын

ThatsJimmii to be quite honest IAG put a lot of time and effort into perfecting this aos and it really shows. There is no longer any oil trapped in my intercooler with all that blow by. So here’s how I see it based on what I have and people I know personally, who are running certain Aos’s. IAG top of the list because again design is flawless, Crawford second because they weren’t even suppose to have these for resale and was only made to take care of a problem on the track. So some thought was put into it, and my friend has one and has nothing but good things I say. Perrin third because it’s affordable and designed works alright lol. But grimmspeed NEVER.

Def go with a fmic. Perrin makes nice fmic kits. They have the stealth series in black. Looks absolutely sick. Some of the ppl commenting saying fmic result in lag and what not. Yes to a certain degree it’s true but it’s all down to the tune. Plus with a fmic it leave so much more room to play with if u decide to go big in the future. If not fmic then definitely an upgraded tmic. Even a stock sti ones are not really an upgrade. Something like a processwest or turboxs tmic are one of the thickest ones on the market.

Can you do an update on this piece? I'd appreciate your input on this air/oil separator unit, I'm considering this but I have heard horror stories of gunk from condensation and stuff.. thank you sir

brian cholick don’t do it. IAG is the way to go if you’re in the market for one. And yea the horror stories are true my friend. I was in one lol.

I personally run the Perrin on my 04 STi but have heard good things about the IAG. There is a "street" and a "competition" version. I've heard the competition is the better choice.

DuhMayor perrin isn’t bad since it also uses a swirl pot design similar to the IAG design. The IAG street is what I personally have, comp version vents to atmosphere and is more geared towards high horsepower race applications.

Oh and killer b let’s not forget those guys. They make awesome stuff as well. Heard their AOS is top notch, although I haven’t owned one personally. I’m sure it’ll live up to the hype.

The grimmspeed AOS isnt capable of passing CA emissions, so you might as well Full Send It - mode. For a street car, having a front mount on the wrx isnt going to make that much of a difference unless you live somewhere hot or plan on sitting in traffic a lot. If someone wants a front mount for making big power, theyre going to have to do major motor upgrades looong before the need for a larger intercooler. The slightly larger STi top mount intercooler is a good OEM+ upgrade, and still passes CA smog. Will still require a tune of course.

no one noticed that he routed the center port on the AOS to the crankcase vent and not the intake?! The center port, or “cleansed hose” goes to the intake

man, I just dont know about the Grimmspeed AOS, I mean look at the Perrin, IAG and CRAWFORD AOS comparred to this GRIMMSPEED. It just seems like its more of a gimmick than pure function!! I don’t know, just the feeling I get!! I mean it’s a hell of a lot easier to install the grimmspeed vs the other 3 but I just feel like it wouldn’t be all that effecient.

For sure a front mount intercooler...might get a little more lag with the factory turbo but temps will be fantastic and you'll free up some engine bay room
