How to Inlay Glaze (the easy way)

hello potters; today we we'll be going over the inlay technique for ceramic artwork. it's an extremely simple technique in which after you carve a pattern you will lay other underglaze, glaze, or even slip of a contrasting color into the pattern in order to accentuate said pattern. in this video we will also go over an easier way to do it other than using different types and sizes of brushes ( which after about 5 can be irritating and time-wasting) with the pin tool applicator.
I hope this video helps you out with your ceramic artwork, enjoy.

I backed up to watch your recent kiln firing video, and also the old ones where you fired your 181. I learned a LOT, since I just inherited a Skutt Kilnsitter 818. Also, one thing people should be prepared for is buying kiln furniture and peephole plugs, etc., I'm also paying to have a dedicated circuit wired. In other words, even though my kiln was free, I still had to be prepared to invest some cash in order to use it. The people who gave it to me were surprised at that. I really gained a great deal by watching those older videos, and I feel a lot more confident firing a manual kiln. Thank you for that :) ~ Gwen Sandau Pottery
I'm doing my year 12 project on pottery and your videos have honestly been a life saver!
Guitar strings come in solid wires in a number of different sizes. Not expensive either, and would be perfect for cleaning out those nozzles.
Love doing inlay, especially on greenware.
As always your sarcastic talk kills me 🤣. Love those cups and thank you to share your knowledge with us. Amazing tips. Indeed is the easy way.
Thank you for showing us this technique. Very cool!
Thank you thank you such a simple technique.
Love the cat❤ More than that love your teaching style and best of all you showed us a finished product 😘
That was great!!
Great tip, thanks!
Again thank you for all the things you show I for one appriciate it cause I have no expierience at all other than what I have watched through videos I always wanted to learn but there is no place around me to use kilns or to take classes I drive an hour and 45 minutes just to buy clay. So many thanks

Blick (dickblick.com) sells clay and some pottery tools. Idk the cost effectiveness of buying it to be shipped to you vs picking it up yourself, but hey there's a reason why convenience costs more.
I love all the memes you add to your videos Donte, it kills me ahaha.
Love it! What glaze was that clear? White? And it doesn’t jack your underglaze! That’s cool!
Hello ..! Can u make a video about materials required for making ceramics?
My art teacher has the applicators, but lost the caps years ago- she uses those pins with the rounded knob to plug it and keep it from drying

Iv seen some ppl just form little clay pieces and top then off to keep the glaze from drying as well.
Oh yeah, thats the stuff ☺
I tend to do inlay at green stage, one or more coloured clays into the carved areas then wiped with a damp sponge or scraped off using a metal kidney unless I’m using oxides
Inlaying glazes is butting one color right up to another color, that has dried completely, not by having divots to put the glaze in. No need for clear glaze. Harder to do, but well worth the hassle.
I love watching your videos. I have carving before but wanted to watch your tutorial on it. I know you said the link to the video on carving was below, but I couldn't find it. Could you give me the link? Thank you. I started taking pottery lessons a year and a half ago, but tend to learn more from videos I watch on youtube. I learned how to carve a foot on a pot from watching your videos. Thank you!

They should be all the way at the bottom of the description down below. I just readded them in case it was a glitch
so is a clear glaze required? (somehow think i've seen that underglaze requires a clear glaze? And can you do the inlay glaze on leatherhard clay? On bone dry clay? On bisque? What is the preferred stage?
So after you inlay the underglaze, you dipped the whole thing in glaze but I noticed the dipped glaze covered up the inlayed underglaze. Do you leave it like that and fire or do you do something to remove the glaze from the inlayed areas?

No. Usually the glaze cover the inlay and you would use a clearish glaze so that you can see through . Like a Celadon glaze or clear. You don't need to wipe it off
What exactly is underglaze? Can I use stroke & Coat?
Did you put clear over the inlay or is it just the one glaze over the underglaze?

It is one glazed over underglaze that has been inlaid into a carved pattern.
I thought inlay was doing with a different clay lol but but but this is so much easier
so ... did you just put a clear over the underglaze?
Was that Megaman on your shelf?

Yes. A subscriber sent it to my p.o box. I'm a huge megaman fan
Large needle for cattle and come in different sizes 😁( yay!) from tractor supply or a farm store would make excellent replacement tip 💜👩🎨 plus come with lid 😉 youre welcome you epic potter you 🙃
Hello, Here is what I do to clean those pesky tips... First, soak it in water with some Dawn dish soap. Next, I use a very thin bead needle. It works like a charm!
The solution to cats vs dogs is....wait for it...RABBITS :). Thank you for yet another wonderfully educational video.
A) Don't you have to let the glaze dry first before you wipe off the excess with your sponge?? Because what if you wipe off all of it (all of it as in all of it in the carving grooves that you made in another video for the tree)? B) Since you made a Pokeball (which I think is pretty dope), can you also please make more video game stuff such as red, green, and blue mushrooms, the super star, Mega mushroom, fire flower, ice flower, propeller mushroom (and basically all the other items), all from Mario, the triforce, heart container, milk bottle, rupee, chicken, and master sword (and again basically all the other items) all from Zelda, the bananas, barrels, hammers, balloons (and again basically all the other items), all from Donkey Kong, the e tanks, missiles, and suits (and again basically all the other items) from Metroid, the dots, power pellets, fruits, Inky Blinky Pinky, Clyde, Mr and Mrs Pac-man all from Pac-man, and lastly, all the Chaos emeralds, rings, and all the other items in the game from Sonic the Hedgehog double please??
If your underglaze dries in the nozzle, Soak it in water and ue a flossing brush to insert inside the nozzle, these types of brushes are small enough to fit inside.

Get pack of sewing needle for it.
You used black under glaze to paint the heart shape on that little cat didn't you! Admit it!
