How To Ink Your Pencil Drawing. It's Not Tracing! -Terry Moore

Today's HOT SEAT Question:
1. Where is the Strangers In Paradise novel?
2. How do you work through times when you're uninspired? And how do you draw cool hair?
ART TIME
I pencil and ink my own comic book series. So I pencil looser than if I were drawing for another artist to ink it. Here is how I pencil for myself, what visual cues I make sure to indicate and how I then ink on top of this loose road map. It's different than working with a comic book team, but it's also faster!
Books by Terry:
Serial, Strangers In Paradise, SIP Kids, Echo, Rachel Rising, Motor Girl, SiP XXV, Five Years, Ever, Terry Moore's How To Draw.

Much respect for artists who still predominantly work traditionally.

This video is special because tradicional inking is from far the best way. The places where you can learn have almost disappear (at least in Spain), so the only way is learning yourself by practice. ... so Mr. Moore thank you for this little master class. :)

Yes, many of us do indeed still use the 102 Hunt/Maru pen.

Super informative! Definitely learned better inking techniques on my part, looking forward to implementing them on my drawings - thanks for this one Terry! 👍👍👍

Thank you for this stunning video. I was at first wondering how to ink over pencil, then stumbled upon this awesome video! I'm entranced in your inking! its so satisfying and inspiring seeing how precise and fluid your lines are. The amount of confidence is killer too!

Loved this, especially you thinking out loud as you make your decisions! So glad you mentioned the Micron replacing the crow quill: I've been experimenting with the 102 for a few days because Kazu Kibuishi mentioned using one in his "Copper" collection, but after your comment I checked the pub date and it's from 2010! I imagine he's moved on as well. Microns FTW! LOL

Ahhh! It's so great to see you on KZread. I've seriously been such a big fan for ages. Your work is beautiful and continues to inspire me. Maybe one day I'll put my paint brush down and finally finish my comic book ideas. Thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge. And for the record, I'd buy and read your book with or without your amazing illustrations though if you could include a few, you'd make this fan oh so happy.

At this point my pencils are often just a few scribbles, which seems to make my final inks more expressive. Though admittedly what I was doing was no layouts, and direct to pencils which made the inks come off stiff. Instead I do layouts and skip pencils and go straight to inks. Not always, but usually. Every once in a while I really want to prove it'll work in pencil first, but at this point I've drawn my characters a billion times.

From Hell by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell is a beast of a book, so is the Paul Bolger novel Hound. Two great examples of big books with illustrations at the back. I would recommend Hound if you have family around since the former is about Jack the Ripper.

This is great! What do you do after you've inked it. Do you simply run an eraser over it the drawings to remove the pencil? I'm new-ish to this because I'm working on my first graphic novel, although I've been a practicing visual artist for over 40 years. Thanks.

This was so great to see! But… how do you get all of the pencils erased without picking up the ink? That’s the main reason I switched to blue pencil

I use vintage Pelikan ink that is very dark, and I use a white eraser carefully.
